Interview with Dr. Nahid Pourrostami FWS Associate Dean for Education, Research and Postgraduate Studies

Meeting with the Deputy Editor of Al-Ahram Newspaper On April 10, 2018, Egyptian journalist and Deputy Editor of the Al-Ahram daily, Ahmed al-Sayoufi, met with Dr. Sayed Sarid Reza Ameli, Dean of the Faculty of World Studies, and Dr. Ali Akbar Alikhani, professor in the West Asian and North Africa Studies department. They discussed the latest situations, and conditions in Egypt following the presidential elections. Also, al- Sayoufi responded in detail to the questions of students of Egyptian Studies concerning the political and economic situation in Egypt. He also visited various departments of the Faculty.

Director of Swahili Radio Met the FWS Vice-Dean for International Relations Dr. Amir- Bahram Arabahmadi, the FWS Vice-Dean for International Relations, held a meeting with Mr. Mobarak Hania, Director of Swahili Radio, on Monday, May 7, 2018. Dr. Arabahmadi spoke about the history of the African Studies department and talked about the courses of study, which for the first time in Iran are being offered at the graduate level. Mr. Hania praised the Islamic Republic of Iran’s radio broadcast service, and also mentioned the mutual cultural interests between Iran and the East African region describing Africa as a vast land with many capabilities, and referred historical instances where Iranians found themselves welcomed continent to the Iranian public, especially to elites, by the people of Africa. The fifth chapter, "Identity and Cultural Symbols of the City of Kyoto: From Past to Present", is dedicated to the experience and history of the city of Kyoto as the cultural capital of Japan. In this chapter, after briefly mentioning general information, the history of Kyoto, religious symbols, urban architectural styles, identity and symbols in its architecture, urbanization, the public spaces of Kyoto, the symbolic representation of the city in media and cyber space, are outlined, as well as policies for preserving the city and protecting the national and local heritage. Finally, in the conclusion of the book, a summary of the discussions has been presented.

"Urban Identity Symbols: Paris, Madrid, Istanbul, and Kyoto" The book provides an experience that deal with concerns over programing and organizing urban centers, specifically cities that exhibit various experiences of identity and heritage. In fact, based on a comparative study of cities with multiple identities, it is imperative not only to improve the methods of urban planning and architecture based on elements of identity, but also, in light of international experiences, research and development of urban planning schemes, policies, and action plans of other metropolises that are involved with many issues related to urban design and management, making the study of their paths and their progress in maintaining urban identity, useful. Dean Honoring FWS Veterans

April 21, 2018 (4 Sha'ban 1439 Lunar year) was the yet in a symbolic expression of gratitude, Dr. Ameli, occasion of the birth of Hazrat Abolfazl al-Abbas (AS), the FWS Dean, accompanied by Dr. ArabAhmadi also called as the Day of the Veterans. Although no FWS adviser of International Affairs, attended the words, expressions or any action could not appreciate offices of these loved ones in celebrating their sacrifice the efforts and sacrifices of the veterans and martyrs; and devotion during the eight years of the Sacred Defense. Despite the passing of 30 years since the end of the Sacred Defense, the names and the selflessness of these loved ones in the way of divine values and protecting the land of Revolution, always remain in the memory of all the Iranians. The commemoration of this great day is a symbol of national respect for the people who spread their umbrella of sacrifice and passion, so that we would live in peace and security.

After one month of prayers and fasting during the faculty members and staff on Sunday June 12, holy month of Ramadhan, FWS Dean hosted the 2018 to celeberate Eid al-Fitr.

The occasions of Clerks’ Day, Eid al-Fitr & Eid al- Adha, were celebrated at the Mellal Hall of the Faculty on September 2, 2018. Dr. Ameli FWS Dean, Dr. Sharbaf Deputy for Administration and Finance Office, and Dr. ArabAhmadi, Deputy for International Affairs hosted this gathering. In this gathering, in which Faculty members were also present, Dr. Ameli thanked Ms. Boveiri with an Appreciation Letter as Faculty’s best employee in spring 2018, and appreciated Mr. Feizollah Mahmoudi and Sadeq Afshar for their good works. Those whose birthday anniversary was in the first half of the year were also given flowers.

Appointments

• On June 3, 2018, Prof Saeid Reza Ameli, the FWS Dean, appointed Dr. Ali Akbar Alikhani to establish a Permanent Secretariat of the International Conference on Peace Studies and Conflict Resolution.

• Prof. Mahmoud Nili Ahmadabadi, the Chancellor of University of Tehran, with the recommendation of Prof Saied Reza Ameli, the FWS Dean, appointed Dr. Maryam Haghroosta as the Director of the Research Center for the Study of Spanish Speaking Countries on July 30, 2018.

• Mrs. Maryam Ahmadi, who had been in charge of public relations and international affairs of the Faculty for many years, was retired this year.

Remembering Late Mr. Mohammad Reza Firouzbakht at FWS

Upon the death of our fellow Mr. hosted by Dr. Seyyed Said Reza Ameli, the Dean of Mohammad Reza Firouzbakht on the the Faculty of World Studies. evening of May 9, 2018; the Faculty of World Studies held a ceremony for this member of FWS family on Monday, May 14, 2018.
