  • 'All You Can Eat
‘All You Can Eat TV’ An exploration of how long form, serial storytelling for television has evolved alongside recent developments in digital television distribution platforms. This thesis also examines how these new technologies have changed the ‘rules’ of narrative, television screenwriting. Masters of Fine Arts by Elise McCredie (DipDA, BA.) Principle Supervisor: Dr Annabelle Murphy Melbourne University Faculty of Fine Arts and Music School of Film and Television April 2018 2 CONTENTS Introduction 3 Chapter 1 5 Chapter 2 13 Chapter 3 19 Conclusion 27 Bibliography/Filmography 30 3 INTRODUCTION “I hate television. I hate it just as much as peanuts but I just can’t stop eating peanuts.” Orson Welles1 I am sitting iPad in front of me, my finger poised over the PAUSE icon. Should I watch another episode or should I go to bed? If I don’t watch another episode will my dreams be full of all the possible outcomes for Don Draper, Walter White or Sarah Lund? Will my imagination soar with possibilities or should I give into the gnawing, addictive urge to watch just one more episode? Will I enjoy it? Or will I, in a foggy state of addictive exhaustion, only take in half of the complicated plot points? If this is the modern conundrum for today’s viewers, then what does it mean for today’s screenwriters? How does this glut of instantly available serial content affect the way we write serial drama? In the last twenty years, there has been a revolution in viewing practices. Broadcast executives have been slowly de-throned as digital advances make viewing serial television a democratic, individualised, multi-platform and frequently illegal practice.

  • CBS All Access Deploys First Animated Star Trek Series
CBS All Access Deploys First Animated Star Trek Series 08.19.2020 CBS All Access goes where no other Star Trek series has gone before with Star Trek: Lower Decks, the franchise's first animated series. The series focuses not on the lofty commanders of one of Starfleet's least important ships, the U.S.S Cerritos, but on the support crew who live and work on the lower decks. That includes Ensign Beckett Mariner, voiced by Tawny Newsome; Ensign Brad Boimler, voiced by Jack Quaid; Ensign Tendi, voiced by Noël Wells; and Ensign Rutherford, voiced by Eugene Cordero. The Starfleet characters that comprise the ship's bridge crew include Captain Carol Freeman, voiced by Dawnn Lewis; Commander Jack Ransom, voiced by Jerry O'Connell; Lieutenant Shaxs, voiced by Fred Tatasciore and Doctor T'Ana, voiced by Gillian Vigman. The series is produced by CBS' Eye Animation Productions, CBS Television Studios' new animation arm; Secret Hideout; and Roddenberry Entertainment. Secret Hideout's Alex Kurtzman and Heather Kadin; Roddenberry Entertainment's Rod Roddenberry and Trevor Roth; and 219 Productions' Katie Krentz serve as executive producers alongside creator and showrunner Mike McMahan. Aaron Baiers (Secret Hideout), who brought McMahan to the project, serves as a co-executive producer. Titmouse (Big Mouth) serves as the animation studio for the series. The series joins CBS All Access' expanding Star Trek franchise, which includes Star Trek: Picard, starring Sir Patrick Stewart reprising his iconic role as Jean-Luc Picard; and Star Trek: Discovery, returning for season three later this year. Also coming later this year is prequel Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, featuring Anson Mount, Rebecca Romijn and Ethan Peck.

Screenings Deal Sees Bell Media Land Exclusive Rights in Canada Each Episode of the New Series to be Available in Canada Day-and-Date with the U.S. LOS ANGELES – May 14, 2019 – CBS Studios International and Bell Media today announced from the L.A. Screenings a licensing agreement for the new untitled “Star Trek” Jean-Luc Picard television series in Canada. With Bell Media’s acquisition of the exclusive linear television and subscription video on demand (SVOD) rights in English and French in Canada, each episode will be available simultaneously with its release in the U.S. The new “Star Trek” series features Sir Patrick Stewart reprising his role as the venerable Jean-Luc Picard, which he played for seven seasons on “Star Trek: Next Generation.” The series will follow this iconic character in the next chapter of his life.
