We will travel today from Coolum to Coffs Harbour via the Pacific Motorway coastal highway, stopping along the way for morning tea and lunch. We will arrive at our stunning beachfront resort destination in the mid- afternoon, giving plenty of time to check-in and freshen up before dinner. 5 nights | Opal Cove Resort Lunch / dinner at hotel Day 2: Exploring the Macleay Valley Coast Thursday, 24 December After breakfast, we are going to take a leisurely coastal drive south to Nambucca Heads via Urunga and enjoy spectacular coastal vistas before crossing the Nambucca River and heading inland to Macksville. From here, we’ll travel west along the Taylors Arm river tributary until we arrive in the township of Taylors Arm for a visit to The Pub with No Beer. The subject of Slim Dusty’s 1962 hit song, ‘The Pub with No Beer’, this hotel is etched in history, and as well as enjoying morning tea here, we will have time to peruse the walls filled with memorabilia. From here, we will wind 65km through the rolling hills dotted with farms and grazing land, along the Taylors Arm Scenic Drive, through the historic town of Willawarrin to Kempsey where we will stop at the Slim Dusty Centre. Here we will enjoy lunch at Dusty’s Dinner Camp Café and explore the centre with a guided tour. After this, we will wind our way along the stunning Macleay Coast tourist drive from Crescent Head to South West Rocks and drive inland along the Macleay River to Clybucca. From here, we will drive north through the stunning Macleay Valley then back to Coffs Harbour and the Opal Cove Resort. Breakfast and dinner at Opal Cove Resort | lunch at The Slim Dusty Centre Day 3: Christmas in Coffs Harbour Christmas day Friday, 25 December Whether you enjoy nature walks, lazing by the pool or a spot of golf, there is something for everyone to enjoy while we spend a slow-paced Christmas Day, relaxing at the Opal Cove Resort. Our festive celebrations will include an indulgent Christmas Lunch including freshly baked breads, seafood, charcuterie, roast meats, salads and vegetables, all the trimmings, and a huge selection of decadent desserts. There will also be light entertainment and a visit from Santa, of course! After the celebrations, the afternoon is yours to enjoy, before we have a light dinner to round out the day. Breakfast | Christmas lunch |dinner at Opal Cove Resort Day 4: Exploring the Waterfall Way Boxing day Saturday, 26 December We will start our day travelling south along the beautiful Waterfall Way through the Bellinger Valley to the charming tree-change town of Bellingen. Here we will visit The Old Butter Factory craft and tourist village on the banks of the Bellinger River. After a bite to eat, we will continue along Waterfall Way to the Dorrigo Rainforest Centre. Here we will venture out to the breathtaking Dorrigo Skywalk – a 21-metre high boardwalk which takes us 70 metres out over the treetops of the Dorrigo National Park. This park is part of the lush, World Heritage Listed Gondwana Rainforests, and the Skywalk offers majestic views across the valleys and gorges of this stunning sub-tropical rainforest to the coast. After this, we will travel through the nearby rural village of Dorrigo to visit the picturesque Dangar Falls – a 30-metre cascade waterfall on the Bielsdown River with a viewing platform providing the perfect spot to capture the stunning vista. Then we return to Dorrigo for a hearty lunch at the Dorrigo Hotel and shopping at the renowned local art, craft and heritage shops. When we are all shopped out, we’ll travel back to Coffs Harbour. Again, we will journey along Waterfall Way to marvel at the many natural wonders along one of the world’s most scenic drives. Breakfast and dinner at Opal Cove Resort | lunch at Dorrigo Hotel Day 5: Port Macquarie Sunday, 27 December Today we will enjoy a later start to our travels with a direct drive from Coffs Harbour, south along the coastal highway with its sweeping beach views, past Kempsey and through the Macleay Valley, to Port Macquarie. After arriving in this idyllic coastal holiday town, we will make our way to the Town Wharf where will board the MV Port AdVenture for a 2-hour lunch cruise along the lovely Hastings River with Cruise Port Macquarie. Lunch aboard the cruise includes a Hot and Cold Buffet and Dessert while we take in the river sights from the beautiful sun deck atop this spacious vessel. After our cruise, we will soak up the coastal sights as we travel north, back to the Opal Cove Resort. Breakfast and dinner at Opal Cove Resort | lunch at Cruise Port Macquarie Day 6: Heading Home Monday, 28 December After four glorious days enjoying the Opal Cove Resort and the NSW mid-north coast region, we will start our day with breakfast, load the coach, and then travel home via the Pacific Highway. We will stop along the way for morning tea and lunch, arriving back in Coolum in the late afternoon. Breakfast at Opal Cove Resort| lunch This itinerary may be subject to change without notice.     COFFS HARBOUR SEDIMENT MODELLING AND INVESTIGATION Luke McAvoy Undergraduate Engineer (Civil) Griffith School of Engineering, Griffith University, Gold Coast, Australia Daniel Rodger Senior Engineer Water Technology Pty Ltd, Brisbane, Australia ________________________________________________________________________ Abstract Water Technology has teamed with Griffith University as a part of the Industrial Affiliates Program to complete a Sediment Modelling Investigation for Coffs Harbour. The harbour at Coffs Harbour has been infilling with sediment since breakwall construction and reclamation linked two nearshore islands with the mainland in the 1920s, interrupting the Longshore Sediment Transport (LST) pathway. The harbour has become a sand sink; sand is entering the harbour and then cannot be removed by natural processes. Following on from previous reports from Carley (2005) and Lord (1984), the investigation has used the latest numerical modelling software, volumetric analysis programs and analytical methods for LST estimation to investigate the effects of the harbour on sediment transport. The effect of the breakwall orientation on wave height and particle velocity for different incident wave directions was investigated using a MIKE 21 Flexible-Mesh Spectral Wave model. The model predicted bottom water particle velocities throughout the harbour and mapped potential accumulation hotspots and sediment pathways. Bathymetric surveys spreading 118 years were analysed with the volumetric analysis program 12D Model. The results showed sand accumulating within the harbour in the lee of the eastern breakwall after its construction, as predicted in the MIKE model. This shoal built up to a uniform level before extending across the entire width of the harbour. Each periodic bathymetric comparison showed the sediment extending further within the harbour as a „wave‟.

Key points: - Our region’s youth unemployment rate is 50% higher than the NSW state average. - There is a decline in the number of apprenticeships being offered in the region. - The current school based traineeship process is overly complicated for students, teachers and employers.

The vegetation of Booti Booti National Park and Yahoo Nature Reserve on the lower North Coast of New South Wales has been classified and mapped from aerial photography at a scale of 1: 25 000. The plant communities so identified are described in terms of their composition and distribution within Booti Booti NP and Yahoo NR. The plant communities are also discussed in terms of their distribution elsewhere in south-eastern Australia, with particular emphasis given to the NSW North Coast where compatible vegetation mapping has been undertaken in many additional areas. Floristic relationships are also examined by numerical analysis of full-floristics and foliage cover data for 48 sites. A comprehensive list of vascular plant taxa is presented, and significant taxa are discussed. Management issues relating to the vegetation of the reserves are outlined.
