EAST SIDE STORY Colorado is 11-4-2 against Eastern Conference teams.

ALL-STAR Nathan MacKinnon was named the Central Division’s captain for the 2020 NHL All-Star Game. He is the first Avalanche player to be named All-Star captain twice (Joe Sakic wore the 'C' once) and the first Avalanche player to be selected to four consecutive All-Star Games since Peter Forsberg was chosen for six straight from 1996-2001. MacKinnon is tied for third in league scoring with 65 points (26g/39a) in 44 games. His 65 points more than double the next closest Avalanche player, Cale Makar (32). Nathan also ranks among the league leaders in shots (2nd-204), points-per-game (3rd-1.48), goals (t-4th), assists (6th) and power-play tallies (t7th-8). MacKinnon's 62 points through 41 games equaled the most by an Avalanche player at the team’s halfway point of a season (Mikko Rantanen, 2018-19).

MACKINNON FIRST STAR Nathan MacKinnon was named the NHL's First Star of the Week for Dec. 30 to Jan. 5. He tied for first among all players with eight points (3g/5a) in three games last week en route to earning his third weekly honor of the season.

AVALANCHE STARS OF THE WEEK Makar – Third Star (Nov. 4-10) MacKinnon – Second Star (Nov. 11-17) MacKinnon – First Star (Nov. 25–Dec. 1) MacKinnon – First Star (Dec. 30–Jan. 5)

CAREER YEARS • Pierre-Edouard Bellemare has matched his single-season career highs in goals (7) and points (16). He had seven goals with Philadelphia in 2015-16 and 16 points with Vegas in 2017-18. He is one assist shy of equaling his personal best (2017-18). • Joonas Donskoi has tied his career high with 14 goals (also 2018-19 and 2017-18 with San Jose). • Ian Cole is one goal shy of tying his career high (done three times). • Samuel Girard needs on assist to match his personal best (2018-19).

FRANKIE FIVE ANGELS Pavel Francouz ranks third in the NHL in save percentage (.929) and eighth in goals-against average (2.32). He posted a 9-0-1 record from Nov. 7–Dec. 23, the longest streak without a regulation loss by an Avalanche netminder since Semyon Varlamov went 16 straight decisions (11-0-5) with a point in 2013-14.

FIRST AND FOREMOST Colorado leads all teams in first-period goals (51). The Avs have won 19 games when scoring the first goal (19-5-3), tied for the second-most wins when scoring first behind St. Louis (20).

ROAD, SWEET ROAD Colorado is 14-8-2 on the road, tied for the second-most away wins behind Washington (17). The Avs are 7-3-1 in their last 11 road contests.

YOU HAD TO BE A BIG Nathan MacKinnon ranks second in the NHL with 204 shots. MacKinnon, who paced the NHL with a franchise-record 366 shots last season, has a shot in 195 consecutive games, the second longest active streak (Dougie Hamilton 290). He fired a career-high 12 shots on Nov. 1 vs. Dallas, tying the single-game franchise record set by Gabriel Landeskog on Jan. 9, 2019 at Calgary.

HATS OFF Mikko Rantanen tallied his second career hat trick on Jan. 4 in New Jersey. Rantanen's second goal came eight seconds into the third period, matching the fastest goal to begin a period in Avalanche history (since the team relocated in 1995). Antti Laaksonen scored 0:08 into the first on Feb. 10, 2006 at Columbus. The franchise record is 0:05 done twice by Nordiques (Dale Hunter in 1985- 86, Marc Tardif in 1981-82).

MULTIPLICITY Samuel Girard recorded three straight multi-point games, Dec. 31–Jan. 4, which included a career-high, four-point night on Jan. 2 vs. St. Louis. Girard became only the third Avalanche defenseman (fourth time) to record three straight multi-point games, joining John- Michael Liles (Dec. 23-29, 2008 and Oct. 10-14, 2005) and Sandis Ozolinsh (Feb. 16-23, 1996). His four-assist game on Jan. 2 tied the franchise record for a defenseman in a single game. Girard was the first blueliner in Avalanche/Nordiques history to record nine assists in a five-game span from Dec. 31–Jan. 7.

ALL HAIL CALE Cale Makar leads all rookie defensemen with 32 points (9g/23a) in 36 games. He is one goal shy of tying the single-season franchise record for a rookie defenseman. Makar leads all rookies with four game-winning goals, which is already a franchise rookie record for a defenseman.

THAT'S A PLUS Ryan Graves is the NHL's plus/minus leader at +30, the highest ever by an Avalanche player through 44 team games. His +29 rating through 41 team games was a record by a Colorado player at the team's halfway point of the season, topping the +23 by in 2002-03, Joe Sakic in 2000-01 and Curtis Leschyshyn in 1995-96. Graves has been a "plus player" in 22 of his 43 contests and has been a "minus" only six times. He had a streak of eight consecutive games with a "plus" from Nov. 27–Dec. 11, the longest run by an Avalanche player since Peter Forsberg from Jan. 2-15, 2004 (also eight).

IN WITH THE NEW Offseason additions Nazem Kadri (15), Joonas Donskoi (14) and Andre Burakovsky (13) all rank among the Avalanche's top-five goal scorers this season. A PERFECT 10 When Dominik Kahun and Patric Hornqvist buried their 10th goals of the season Tuesday night in Vegas, they became the Penguins’ sixth and seventh skaters to tally 10 or more goals this season, making Pittsburgh one of just four teams in the NHL to have seven players with 10+ goals this season:

Pittsburgh - 7 Colorado – 7 Montreal – 7 Washington – 7 Eight Teams – 6

Brandon Tanev, who currently has nine goals, is one shy of giving Pittsburgh a league-best eight players with 10+ goals. The Penguins had eight players tickle the twine 10+ times all of last season.

JARRY AGAINST THE WEST Tristan Jarry has done some of his best work against the Western Conference this season. Overall, the Pittsburgh netminder has lost in regulation to a Western Conference opponent just once, as he carries a 10-1-1 record, a 1.91 goals-against average and a .938 save percentage against them heading into tonight’s tilt with the Avalanche. Additionally, two of his three shutouts came against the West.

Jarry is also is riding a 10-game unbeaten streak (9-0-1) against Western Conference foes dating back to Nov. 25, 2019 where he has a 1.99 goals-against average and a .938 save percentage.

CALDER WORTHY Penguins rookie defenseman John Marino picked up the 20th point of his career on Dominik Kahun’s power-play goal on Tuesday, making him just the 11th rookie blueliner in franchise history to record 20 or more points. Marino’s .49 points-per-game average has him on pace to challenge Zarley Zalapski’s team rookie defenseman record of 45 points set in the 1988-89 campaign, and is the fourth-highest points-per-game average by a rookie blueliner in franchise history:

Player PTS/GM Zarley Zalapski .77 Ryan Whitney .56 Norm Schmidt .53 John Marino .49 Doug Bodger .48

Marino currently ranks fourth among all NHL rookie blueliners in goals (4), assists (16), points (20) and average time on ice (20:17). His plus-14 is second-best, only trailing Minnesota’s Carson Soucy (+15) and his 59 blocked shots lead Pittsburgh and are third-most among NHL rookie defensemen.

HEY NOW, YOU’RE AN ALL-STAR The NHL announced on Tuesday night that Penguins defenseman Kris Letang and goaltender Tristan Jarry have been named to the NHL All-Star Game, replacing injured forward Jake Guentzel and goaltender Joonas Korpisalo.

Jarry, who has been named an All-Star for the first time in his career, is 14-6-0 with an NHL-best 2.04 goals-against average and .934 save percentage. His 14 wins are tied with his career high set in 2017-18. Jarry enters tonight’s contest with wins in four-straight road games. During that span, he has a 2.00 goals-against average and a .938 save percentage.

Letang, now a six-time All-Star, leads all Pittsburgh defensemen and ranks fourth overall on the team with 28 points (10G-18A) in 35 games. His .80 points-per-game average this season is eighth-best among all NHL blueliners. Letang has hit the 10-goal plateau for the second-consecutive season and seventh time in his career, making him one of just nine active defensemen to have seven or more seasons with 10+ goals (also , 11; Zdeno Chara, 10; Brent Burns, 9; Dustin Byfuglien, 9; , 7; Oliver Ekman-Larsson, 7; Drew Doughty, 7; , 7).

ASCENDING THE RANKS Evgeni Malkin, who has 639 career assists in 882 games, currently sits one assist shy of tying Jaromir Jagr (640) for third place on the Penguins all-time assist list:

Player GP A Mario Lemieux 915 1,033 Sidney Crosby 960 782 Jaromir Jagr 806 640 Evgeni Malkin 882 639 Ron Francis 533 449

Malkin’s 639 assists currently ranks fifth among active players, trailing San Jose’s Joe Thornton (1,082), teammate Sidney Crosby (782), Anaheim’s (681) and Washington’s Nicklas Backstrom (667).

LETANG CLOSING IN ON 400 ASSISTS Defenseman Kris Letang is looking to keep re-writing the history books in Pittsburgh, as he currently sits one assist shy of becoming the first defenseman in franchise history to record 400 assists in their career. Letang would also become just the sixth player in Penguins history to record 400 or more assists, joining Mario Lemieux (1,033), Sidney Crosby (782), Jaromir Jagr (640), Evgeni Malkin (639) and Ron Francis (449).

Letang is also looking to become the seventh active defenseman to pick up 400 or more assists:
