April 1969 Um eine hydrobiologische Untersuchung auf der Insel Neukaledonien im SW-Pazifik durchzuführen, fand im Sommer (Juni—Okt.) 1965 eine Forschungs- reise unter der Leitung von Doz. Dr. F. STARMÜHLNER statt. Die weiteren Teilnehmer waren Dr. A. KALTENBACH, Dr. G. WENINGER und Cand. phil. E. OBERZELLER. Als Aufenthaltszeit wurde der südliche Winter wegen der relativen Trockenheit gewählt, da nur zu dieser Jahreszeit die zum Ziel ge- setzten hydrobiologischen Untersuchungen (STARMÜHLNER 1968, WENINGER 1968) möglich waren. Der Hauptaufgabenbereich der Expeditionsteilnehmer und die für das Auffinden von Landgastropoden ungünstige Jahreszeit erklärt die geringe Ausbeute. Die Aufsammlungen konnten nur neben der eigentlichen Fließwasseruntersuchung an Bach- und Flußufern durchgeführt werden. -
Land Snails of the Eungella Plateau and Environs, Clarke Range, Mid-Eastern Queensland
LAND SNAILS OF THE EUNGELLA PLATEAU AND ENVIRONS, CLARKE RANGE, MID-EASTERN QUEENSLAND STANISIC, J.1 & WINDOW, E.2 This study documents the land snails recovered on the Eungella Biodiversity Survey. Thirty-three species belonging to 10 families are documented, representing the first attempt at analysing the altitudinal stratification of the Eungella land snail fauna. Three species were newly recorded and subsequently described from the survey, these being Eungellaropa crediton Holcroft 2018, Burwellia staceythomsonae Holcroft & Stanisic 2018, and Pereduropa burwelli Holcroft & Stanisic 2018. Fastosarion comerfordae Stanisic 2018 was also described from the survey material, having previ- ously been confused with the Mt Dryander Fastosarion superba (Cox, 1871). Species are discussed in relation to their current taxonomy, their local and more widespread distributions, and their habitat and microhabitat preferences. Shortcomings of the land snail survey are also briefly discussed. A bio- geographic overview of the Eungella rainforest land snails is presented. Most of these observations were made during the day time. Whenever possible, field notes and photographs were taken when interactions between Plectostoma species and their predators were seen. We made five direct observations on the interactions between Plectostoma snails and their predators (Table S1). We found two Pteroptyx species larvae (Lampyridae) and an Atopos slug species (Rathouisiidae) attacking three Plectostoma species. We analyse expert-confirmed occurrence records from the collection of the Australian Museum of altogether 733 species of invertebrates that exhibit a wide range of life history strategies, dispersal abilities and ecological adaptations (dung beetles, spiny freshwater crayfishes, drosophilid flies, land snails, mygalomorph and archaeid spiders). For 29 species (two dung beetles, four species of spiny freshwater crayfishes, four drosophilid flies, 11 land snails, five mygalomorph and three archaeid spiders), all known occurrences are within the extent of the 2019–2020 bushfires. In addition, the ranges of another 46 species had at least half of their known occurrences completely contained within the fire zone. Given these figures, the conservation status of many NSW species may require revision to recognize the higher level of threat, and active conservation actions will need to be taken to ensure the survival of these and other species. -

(Plates xxv-xxvii.) INTRODUCTION. The present article is based on several specimens of a slug collected more than forty years ago by the late Dr. F. Stoliczka in Penang I and at present in the possession of the Indian Museum. They have been placed at lny disposal through the kindness of Dr. N. Annandale for anatomical investigation. Although left in alcohol for so many years, the animals were still in such a good condition as to allow me to make out the anatomical features in full detail \vith a few exceptions only. Having access to Simroth (12) and Collinge's (3, 4, 5, 6) publications, I took the opportunity of comparing the anatorny of other species of Atopos (of which PodanRia is a subgenus) with that of the present species. As the animals had not been lately identified, it was necessary for me to consider the external characters fully and in minute detail, including the coloration. Unfortunately the colours of the animals have probably faded through long immersion in alcohol, but I have described them as they are at present. Before passing on to the anatomy at once I shall try to find out the positions of the animals and the genus to which they most probably belong. The specimens were placed in the family of Vaginulidae (Veronicellidae, Gray), order Pulmonata, under the name of Veronicella sanguinolenta by Stoliczka.2 In 1891 Simroth in his admirable monograph (12) defined a new genus Atopos which he established for three species of Vaginula, Latrille, 1 Apparently he obtained the specimens in the" more wild and deep ravines of the north· western part of the island." [email protected] As a part of an inventory of the terrestrial malacofauna of the Malaysian state of Sabah (north- ern Borneo), the slugs and semislugs were given particular attention. Except for several exotic and presumed exotic species, slugs and semislugs are generally rare and infrequently encoun- tered, mostly at high altitudes, where several short-range endemics appear to exist. We describe one new species, viz: Ibycus rachelae nov. spec. (Ariophantidae). Teasdale 2 For Kevin, and my parents: Maria and Stephen. 3 Abstract The pulmonates are the most speciose gastropod lineage and are highly diverse in morphological form and habitat. The evolutionary relationships among the pulmonates have remained controversial despite a long history of scientific study. Recent molecular studies have placed traditionally pulmonate (air-breathing) and non-pulmonate taxa into Panpulmonata; however, the relationships within this new group are still poorly understood. Incongruence between molecular studies has generally resulted from a lack of informative loci but the advent of next generation sequencing technologies means it is now feasible to produce large genetic datasets for non-model organisms. The main aim of my thesis was to investigate the timing and pattern of evolutionary relationships within the Panpulmonata, at multiple taxonomic scales, using phylogenomic datasets. The qualification of orthology is a significant challenge when developing large, multi- locus datasets for phylogenetics from transcriptome assemblies. In Chapter 2, I identified 500 orthologous single-copy genes from 21 transcriptome assemblies across the Eupulmonata (mostly terrestrial land snails and slugs) using a thorough approach to orthology determination, involving manual alignment curation and gene tree assessment. I further qualified orthology by sequencing the genes from the genomic DNA of 22 representatives of the Australian land snail family Camaenidae using exon capture.
