Supreme Court Review Panel Professors Dan Conkle and Steve Sanders will discuss highlights from the Supreme Court’s new term, which starts Oct. 7. Among the matters they will discuss: a trio of cases asking whether the Title VII federal anti-sex discrimination law covers sexual orientation and gender identity; a Second Amendment case that may indicate the Court’s future direction on gun rights; the future of DACA, the federal program that has allowed 700,000 "Dreamers" to avoid deportation; and whether, under the religion and equal protection clauses, a state may end a student-aid program rather than allow its funds to be used for religious schools. Room 120, 5:00-6:00 p.m. Wednesday Washington, DC Semester Program Fall Semester 2020 Please come to this information session to learn about this program. Students can apply for the fall 2020 semester at two different times. The first application period will close on November 8. The second period will close in February 2020. The first period is primarily to allow students to secure positions with early application deadlines or with certain security clearance requirements. Students interested in Department of State positions should contact Professor Hughes as soon as possible. Interested students also should meet with Ms. Lanham to review graduation requirements, plan their spring 2020 and spring 2021 course work and budgets now, and consider housing needs for 2020 in Bloomington and DC, and with Dean McFadden or Professor Hughes to discuss possible positions. Center for Constitutional Democracy Speaker: Rick Welch This presentation will describe Rick’s recent experience in Iraq from June 2018 through July 2019 as country manager for the United States Institute of Peace, implementing peace- building and conflict-resolution programs throughout Iraq aimed at resolving tribal conflicts and reforming tribal practices that destabilize communities and erode rule of law and state institutions; assisting return of and protection of minority communities post-ISIS; leading community reconciliation and strengthening social cohesion; preventing radicalization of conflict-affected women and youth through community reintegration; increasing capacity of minority communities to advocate for better representation and good governance in local, provincial, and national institutions; and building capacity in government and non-government organizations to effectively identify issues, develop solutions, and implement programs that prevent violent conflict within communities or among ethno-religious groups. It is the aim of the presentation to demonstrate the inherent and close interconnection between peace-building and conflict resolution in deeply-divided societies and effective constitutional and institutional design. Likewise, the presentation will show the challenges presented to peace-building and conflict resolution efforts in deeply-divided societies that are created, or at least exacerbated, by weak, inept or corrupt institutions, a flawed constitution, and weak or selective enforcement of law. Mark your calendars: The Office of Student Affairs is hosting two dinners for first- generation students and international JD students whose language of instruction in undergraduate school was not English. The dinners will include fellow upper-level students who will share their experiences, provide insights, and offer tips about being a first-generation student and studying law in a second language. These dinners are follow-up events to those held during orientation in August, with the intention of allowing students to reconnect about their experiences so far this semester.
