Center for Constitutional Democracy Speaker: Rick Welch This presentation will describe Rick’s recent experience in Iraq from June 2018 through July 2019 as country manager for the United States Institute of Peace, implementing peace- building and conflict-resolution programs throughout Iraq aimed at resolving tribal conflicts and reforming tribal practices that destabilize communities and erode rule of law and state institutions; assisting return of and protection of minority communities post-ISIS; leading community reconciliation and strengthening social cohesion; preventing radicalization of conflict-affected women and youth through community reintegration; increasing capacity of minority communities to advocate for better representation and good governance in local, provincial, and national institutions; and building capacity in government and non-government organizations to effectively identify issues, develop solutions, and implement programs that prevent violent conflict within communities or among ethno-religious groups. It is the aim of the presentation to demonstrate the inherent and close interconnection between peace-building and conflict resolution in deeply-divided societies and effective constitutional and institutional design. Likewise, the presentation will show the challenges presented to peace-building and conflict resolution efforts in deeply-divided societies that are created, or at least exacerbated, by weak, inept or corrupt institutions, a flawed constitution, and weak or selective enforcement of law.     Against all odds on a gridiron in South Bend, Indiana, Daniel "Rudy" Ruettiger, in twenty-seven seconds, carved his name into history books as perhaps the most famous graduate of the University of Notre Dame. The son of an oil refinery worker and the third of 14 children, Rudy rose from valleys of discouragement and despair to the pinnacles of success. Today, he is one of the most popular motivational speakers in the United States. It took years of fierce determination to overcome obstacles and criticisms, yet Rudy achieved his first dream - to attend Notre Dame and play football for the Fighting Irish. Pizzo and his former roommate at IU, director David Anspaugh, teamed on Hoosiers and Rudy, two of the most beloved sports films of all time. Pizzo, 58, now lives in Bloom- ington with his wife, Greta, and sons, Anthony, 11, and Quinn, 8. He sat down with Bloom to take 20 questions for this inaugural issue.     2016 Arts Commissioner Profiles Alain Barker | Council Appointment | Term Ends: 1/31/19 abarker@indiana.edu Alain Barker (MM, DM) has an entrepreneurial career that includes arts organization development, arts policy research, communications & marketing, teaching & performance. He was appointed Director of Music Entrepreneurship and Career Development at the Jacobs School of Music in July 2014. From 2004 - 2014, Barker directed Jacobs School of Music marketing and publicity operations. Initiatives during this time included a rebranding of the school, development of multiple communications platforms, publicity and marketing for more than 1,100 events annually, and integration of social media into school life. From 1994-2004, he was Executive Director of the Bloomington Early Music Festival, a time during which the project grew to national significance. He has worked as a consultant to major music organizations; agent, organizer and publicist for local not-for-profits, concert series and artists; manager of three international tours by Aguavá New Music Studio; and managed a number of US tours by leading classical music performers. Barker was co-principal flute in the Orchestra of the Asturian Principality, in Oviedo, Spain, and principal flute in the Marion, Ind. Philharmonic. He has performed in numerous recitals and music festivals around the U.S. and, with the Aguavá New Music Studio, toured across the U.S., as well as to Mexico, Colombia, and Israel. Rabbi Ballon officiated. Sharon Lasky met her husband Sid Mishkin at Indiana University where they lived in adjacent dormitories at Graduate Residence Center (GRC). Sharon was from Oceanside, Long Island, and Sid from Donora, Penn. When they met in 1960 Sharon was a Yankees fan and Sid’s favorite team was the Pittsburgh Pirates. Those two teams played each other in the World Series that year. At the same time, the Kennedy/Nixon presidential elections were taking place. Between sports and politics, they had a lot to talk about. All of the slides that were taken of the wedding have been lost, so this photo is the only one remaining of their wedding. Jay Perler and Bonnie Schilling Perler were married on August 30, 1964 at Temple Tifereth Israel, in Columbus, Ohio. Their wedding ceremony included both sets of parents and all their siblings. Jay and Bonnie met in high school in Columbus and had their first date on Jan. 2, 1960. He was a senior and she was a junior, but at different schools. They were introduced through mutual friends. Jay went on to receive a master’s in social work from Ohio State University. In 1988, Jay and Bonnie moved to Indianapolis where Jay worked as an account manager for Levi Strauss for 22 years.
