Benson Fong, Beulah Quo, and George Takei on the set of My Three Sons. 2016 Amerasia Journal Amerasia 96 Amerasia Journal 42:2 (2016): 96-117 10.17953/aj.42.1.96 The Asian American Next Door Enfiguring the Model Minority on the Domestic Melodrama Melissa Phruksachart In the years between the mass incarceration of Japanese Americans (1942-1946) and the 1965 Immigration Act, what prepared the Ameri- can public to recognize and validate the term “model minority?” This essay proposes a televisual genealogy of the model minority as dis- tinct from the 1966 formulation published by The New York Times in William Petersen’s feature “Success Story, Japanese-American Style.”1 Building upon prior scholarship, I inquire into the early Cold War log- ics that precipitated the popular rise of the model minority figure in 1966. In particular, I point to network television as an archive that circulated the structures of feeling necessary for the model minority to take hold. By doing so, I place recent histories of Asian American do- mesticity during the Cold War era into closer conversation with U.S. popular culture, particularly television. While popular media histories lament the rarity of Asian Ameri- cans on television, I identify the trope of the Asian American neigh- bor as increasingly common on television in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Both the television industry and Asian American communities found themselves rapidly growing in size in mid-1950s California. At stake for both the television industry and Asian American commu- nities was the chance to be “domesticated” into the American home.

Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****. Here we come. Walking down the street. We get the funniest looks from everyone we meet. Hey, hey, we re The Monkees! The idea of creating a tv series about a wacky rock group similar to The Beatles had been unsuccessfully kicked around Universal Pictures and Columbia Pictures since 1962, but by 1965, The Beatles were on their second tour, and their Help! album, single, and tour created a popularity wave called Beatlemania. The enormous success of their A Hard Day s Night album and single convinced Screen Gems to green light the tv series idea, and The Monkees were born. A fake band seemed odd in the real world still reeling from race riots, John F. Kennedy s assassination, and the Vietnam War, but delightful Davy Jones, peppy Peter Tork, madcap Micky Dolenz, and comparatively serious Michael Nesmith were too busy singing to bring anybody down. Fake became steak by late 1966, and with help from super musicians Tommy Boyce, Bobby Bart, Neil Diamond, Chip Douglas, Carole King, John Stewart, and others, the series skyrocketed to hit status along with #1 music... • The History of the Turtles Featuring Flo & Eddie
THE HISTORY OF THE TURTLES FEATURING FLO & EDDIE Very few rock performers have remained as vital through the 1960s, ‘70s, ‘80s, ‘90s and the new millennium as have Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman... and as The Turtles, featuring Flo & Eddie, they continue to maintain a vigorous tour schedule. Two guys from Westchester. That's how Mark Volman and Howard Kaylan (aka Flo and Eddie) refer to themselves. Two slightly bewildered kids thrust into the fast lane of rock 'n' roll stardom - hits, fame, national tours, hanging out with the Beatles, joining the Mothers of Invention, acting in the 200 Motels movie, and on and on ... Two guys from Westchester. Howard Kaylan (changed in 1965 from Kaplan, because that's how it always looked when he wrote his name) was born June 22, 1947 in the Bronx, and spent his first eight years in Manhattan before his father took a job with General Electric in Utica, New York. After the family moved there for a year or so, they moved to the Los Angeles area, settling in Westchester. Mark Volman was born April 19, 1947. After a brief period living in Redondo Beach, his family moved nearby to Westchester. Little did they know it at the time, but both Mark's and Howard's musical direction was forged by a crusty, old Mr. Ferguson who gave clarinet lessons in a drafty cubicle above the Westchester Music Store. Mark went to Orville Wright Jr. High, while Howard went to Airport Jr. High. They didn't know each other, but they both pursed their lips around clarinet reeds for Mr.

  • Domestic Trauma and Cinephilia in American Culture a Dissertation Submit
UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Fraught Pleasures: Domestic Trauma and Cinephilia in American Culture A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in Film and Television by Benjamin Raphael Sher 2015 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Fraught Pleasures: Domestic Trauma and Cinephilia in American Culture by Benjamin Raphael Sher Doctor of Philosophy in Film and Television University of California, Los Angeles, 2015 Professor Kathleen A. McHugh, Chair This project examines different ways in which people have used their profound love of mainstream American films to process experiences of trauma that take place in and around the home (including abuse, neglect, abandonment, and bullying/violence related to identity). It argues that a love of film, known as cinephilia, may contain and be motivated by painful traces of trauma that create barriers to personal growth. At the same time, the fraught pleasures that lead a person to re-enact his or her traumas by, for example, obsessively watching films, though often regarded as destructive and counter-productive, may carry within them reparative, therapeutic tools. Popular fictional films and television shows repeatedly make connections between trauma, cinephilia, and criminality. These texts refer to widely accepted assumptions made by organizations, including the government and the educational system, that trauma survivors’ consumption of media relating to their devastating experiences will lead them to perpetuate ii traumas on others. This project counteracts such assumptions by examining less prominent evidence that presents trauma survivors’ cinephilia as therapeutic, including case studies by therapists who use popular films in treatment and autobiographical documentaries.
