IST Significant Weather Features ♦ The Very Severe Cyclonic Storm “Tauktae” (pronounced as Tau’Te) over eastcentral Arabian Sea moved northnorthwestwards with a speed of about 20 kmph during past 06 hours, intensified into an Extremely Severe Cyclonic Storm and lay centred at 0530 hours IST of today, the 17th May, 2021 over eastcentral Arabian Sea near latitude 18.5°N and longitude 71.5°E, about 160 km west-southwest of Mumbai, 290 km south-southeast of Veraval (Gujarat), 250 km south- southeast of Diu and 840 km south-southeast of Karachi (Pakistan). It is very likely to move north-northwestwards and reach Gujarat coast in the evening hours of 17th & cross Gujarat coast between Porbandar & Mahuva (Bhavnagar district) during the night (2000-2300 hrs IST) of 17th May as a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm with a maximum sustained wind speed 155-165 kmph gusting to 185 kmph. ♦ The trough from the cyclonic circulation associated with the Very Severe Cyclonic Storm “Tauktae” (pronounced as Tau’Te) over eastcentral Arabian Sea to south Rajasthan across north Konkan and Gujarat region extending upto 1.5 km above mean sea level persists. Main Weather Observations Light to moderate rainfall occurred at many places over Vidarbha, West Madhya Pradesh, at few places over East Madhya Pradesh, at isolated places over Chhattisgarh. Thundersquall occurred at isolated places over Vidarbha. Thunderstorm with lightning occurred at isolated places over Vidarbha, Madhya Pradesh & Chhattisgarh. They were below normal over Chhattisgarh & Vidarbha, normal over Madhya Pradesh. Shajapur recorded the highest maximum temperature of 42.8 degree Celsius. Fall in maximum temperatures by 3 - 5 degree celsius during next 48 hours over Madhya Pradesh & Vidarbha, there after gradual rise by 3 - 5 degree celsius. No large change in maximum temparatures over Chhattisgarh during next 48 hours. Minimum Temperature Minimum temperature appreciably fell over West Madhya Pradesh. No large change in mimimum temperatures over East Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Vidarbha. They were below normal over Madhya Pradesh and normal over Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh. Seoni recorded the lowest minimum temperature of 18.4 degree celsius. The slate pencil industry is the main industry of the district. 1.LOCATION Mandsaur District forms the northern projection of Madhya Pradesh from its western Division, i.e., Ujjain Commissioner’s Division. It lies between the parallels of latitude 230 45′ 50″ North and 250 2′ 55″ North, and between the meridians of longitude 740 42′ 30″ East and 750 50′ 20″ East. 2.BOUNDARIES The District is bounded by two Districts namely Neemuch in the west-north and Ratlam District of Madhya Pradesh bounds it in the South. It is also surrounded by Pratapgarh, Chittorgarh, Kota, Jhalawar districts of Rajasthan. 3.AREA AND POPULATION The District is an average size district of Madhya Pradesh. It extends for about 142 km. from north to south and 124 km. from east to west. The total area is 5521 sq. km. with a population of 1183274 in 2001. The Scheduled Castes population of the District is 212262, Scheduled Tribes 37526 and 4.ORIGIN OF THE NAME The District takes its name from the headquarters town, Mandsaur. It is considered to have been evolved from Marhsaur, originating from Marh and Saur (or Dasaur, two of the villages which merged in the town. The town was known as Dashpur in ancient times.
