  • Sources for the Study of Gurū Gobind Singh's Life and Times
G.S. Mann: Sources for Study 229 Sources for the Study of Guru Gobind Singh's Life and Times Gurinder Singh Mann University of California, Santa Barbara ___________________________________________________________ This essay surveys the sites, artifacts, and literary texts associated with Guru Gobind Singh's period (1675-1708). In the process, it introduces a set of sources of information as well as attempts at reorientation of the context that produced them. In a brief conclusion, the essay highlights the need for expanding and revising the current understanding of the Guru's life. ___________________________________________________________ The present day understanding of Guru Gobind Singh's life is constructed around three landmarks: his birth in Patna in eastern India, in 1666; his creation of the Khalsa ("Community of the Pure") at Anandpur, in the Punjab hills, in 1699; and his replacement of the office of the personal Guru with the Granth, the Sikh scripture, thereby elevating it to the position of the Guru Granth ("Book manifested as the Guru") at the time of his death, in Nanderh in south India, in 1708.1 The details that fill in the forty-two years of the Guru's life are culled from a variety of texts, which begin with the Dasam Granth ("the tenth book" or "book of the tenth [Guru]"), an anthology of poetry created largely between 1685 to 1698, and Sri Gur Sobha ("Praise of the Guru"), a poetic history of the period presently dated in 1711, and include eighteenth and nineteenth century writings culminating in Giani Gian Singh's synthetic narrative, Tvarikh Guru Khalsa ("History of the Guru Community"), completed in 1891.2 (For a brief review of this chronology of events see Appendix).

  • Postscript: November 1985
Postscript: November 1985 In the time since the typescript of this book went to the publishers, events have highlighted a number of its themes. Perhaps the most important - the agreement between Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and Harchand Singh Longowal, announced on 24 July 1985 1 - emphasised a basic argument of the book: that political decisions, rather than inexorable social forces, determine the form and intensity of ethnIc conflict. On the face of it, Punjab's problems should have been more intractable by July 1985 than ever before. The mood of Sikhs, for example, should have been more intransigent. The army had been deployed in Punjab for more than a year, the Sikhs there complained of violations of civil rights. In addition, Sikhs everywhere shared the anger and humiliation, if not the loss and death, of those who suffered in the rioting following Mrs Gandhi's murder. 'National opinion', too, might have been expected to have hardened against Sikhs. The death of more than 80 people in terrorist bombings in New Delhi and other parts of north India on 11 and 12 May ought to have embittered feelings further, as should the mysterious crash of an Air India jumbo jet off the coast of Ireland on 23 June which killed more than 320 people. Furthermore, the 'Memorandum of Settlement' of July 1985 between the central government and Longowal's Akali Dal appeared to contain nothing new. Indeed, wrote The Tribune, it ran 'along lines known and agreed upon almost two years ago'.2 The 'Indian Talks' section of this book (pp.

  • From Guru Nanak to Maharaja Ranjit Singh
FFrroomm GGuurruu NNaannaakk ttoo MMaahhaarraajjaa RRaannjjiitt SSiinngghh (Bibliographic description of books in English) (Dr. H. S. Chopra) PhD.(His.) PhD(Lib. & Inf. Sc.) University Librarian [email protected] , [email protected] Bhai Gurdas Library Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar Introduction We have few bibliographies of Sikhism which are comprehensive and updated. Printed bibliographies serve the purpose only upto the date of their publication. Writers found it difficult to update them. In the present scenario with the coming of Internet there is no such problem of updating. In this way this bibliography will be first of its kind which will be regularly updated. An attempt has been made to prepare a bibliography of books written in English at any time focusing on the period 1469-1849 AD i.e. from Guru Nanak Dev to Maharaja Ranjit Singh. We have tried to cover all the books whether available in Bhai Gurdas Central Library, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar (Pb.) or available or published at any place in the world. Sikhism, the youngest of the major world religions, strictly monotheistic in its fundamental belief, was born in the Punjab. Sikhism is not only a philosophical system but is also a distinct cultural pattern, a way of life signified by the term Sikh Panth. In Punjabi the term is ‘sikkh’ usually transliterated sikh. “Sikh” now almost universally denotes a follower of Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism. According to Guru Nanak, God is One, a single Supreme Reality. He is the creator, preserver, destroyer and recreator of material existence, but He Himself is uncreated, unborn and self-existent.

  • Indian World Forum
Indian World Forum PROMOTING Connecting Indian Diaspora Culture & Heritage Networking India with World Commerce & Industry Peace & Harmony Social Justice & Empowerment Sports & Youth Affairs 21st September 2020 Respected His Excellency Mr. Abdou Abarry, This refers to my representation submitted to the then presidency of United Nations Security Council on 4th January 2020. I am writing you today again, to seek your immediate intervention on atrocities being caused to minorities living in state of Islamic Republic of Pakistan. In particular minorities belonging to Hindu and Sikh religion who have close bonds with India. The minorities living in Islamic Republic of Pakistan are victim of heinous crimes which is threatening International peace. Atrocities ranging from abduction to forceful conversion into Islam of young girls is a matter of great concern and decrease in demographics of minorities portrays lack of compliance of Islamic Republic of Pakistan to UN Charter. Multiple incidents are being reported from Islamic Republic of Pakistan where minorities are being subjected to gross violations of Human Rights and once such incident is of Manmeet Kaur Bulbul , a Sikh girl, resident of Attock District, Punjab who is alleged to be abducted from the vicinity of her residence about fifteen days back and forcefully converted to Islam and subsequently forcefully married to a local Muslim boy openly under state of Islamic Republic of Pakistan. Many young girls residing in Khyber Pakhtunwa , Punjab and Sindh province having been missing or abducted and are subjected to sexual exploitation and abuse. Irrespective of several appeals and complaints by their parents and guardians to local authorities, the state of Islamic Republic of Pakistan has failed to take any preventive measure or responsive action and on contrary the administration and state of Islamic Republic of Pakistan is alleged to be instrumental in protecting and shielding all those accused involved in heinous crimes against minorities living there.
