L.A. nAY OR SA~1 YORTY TO SPEAK THURSDAY AT UM

t-IISSOULA-- Mayor Sam Yorty, a Democratic Presidential candidate, will give a free

public lecture at the University of 1ontana on Thursday (Jan. 27). The lecture will begin

at 8:15p.m. in the University Center Ballroom and a public reception in the UC lantana

Rooms will follow the speech.

Yorty was reelected to a third term as mayor in 1969, following the largest voter

turnot:Jt--nearly 80%--in the history of Los Angeles. On November 16 J 1971, he announced

he was planning to enter the Presidential primary in .

The mayor describes himself as a moderate Democrat, a position which he hopes will

appeal not only to the majority of Democrats but also to Republicans disillusioned

with the Nixon administration. He has said that the most obvious failure of the Nixon

administration is in the field of economics, particularly in the area of taxation.

Our foreign policy, according to Yorty, is in disarray and America's statements of

purpose lack credibility and free world solidarity. He cites Israel as a nation which he

feels is in need of face-to-face negotiations between the parties and American understanding

of Israeli reluctance to be pressured into a stopgap peace.

Yorty started his political career in 1936 when he won a Democratic seat in the

California Assembly. In 1950 he ran successfully for the U.S. House of Repre<5entatives

from 's 14th Congressional District. In 1961 he won the mayoralty race against

incumbent and was reelected in 1965. He won his third term against black

councilman Tom Bradley in 1969.

As , Yorty is credited with giving direction to welding the central city and the suburbs together, integrating city government, and initiating a far-reaching city planning program for orderly development of Los Angeles, which has been steadily growing at the rate of 1,000 persons a week. He has led the fight for use of nuclear energy to meet the city 1 s future fresh \vater and pmver supply needs.

In addition, the Los fulgeles 'Economic Development Board, created by Yorty in 1963 to attract industry and encourage expansion of local business concerns, has administratively assisted in processing nearly a billion dollars \vorth of new construction. The projects aided by the board have generated over 6 million construction employment days, and have boosted city tax revenue over $4.5 million. Nearly 95,000 permanent employes work in the completed facilities.

Thursday 1 s lecture is sponsored by the Program Counci 1 of the Associated Students of U~1.
