ORAL HISTORY T-0077 INTERVIEW WITH MS PHYLLIS LAFATA INTERVIEWED BY DR. ANN B. LEVER WOMEN IN THE SEVENTIES PROJECT FEBRAUARY 15, 1972 This transcript is a part of the Oral History Collection (S0829), available at The State Historical Society of Missouri. If you would like more information, please contact us at [email protected]. LEVER: As a part of the Oral History Project at the University of Missouri at St. Louis, I have with me today Phyllis LaFata. LAFATA: My name is Phyllis LaFata. I'm 46 years old. Professionally, I am Public Relations Director of all the YWCA's in the city of St. Louis. I have five children, four of my own and a foster child. I am divorced, and I am if not the sole, certainly the major supporter of my family. Last January I graduated from this university with a Master's Degree. Previous to that, I attended Lindenwood College for two years, and took a degree at the University of Illinois, a liberal arts degree with a major in English and a minor in psychology. LEVER: Where were you born? LAFATA: I was born in Mount Vernon, Illinois, a small town in southern Illinois. LEVER: And your parents occupation and level of education? LAFATA: My father graduated from Bradley University with a degree in horology, which I think is fascinating because it's watch making, and that's the Greek word for hour. He practiced that for a while then he went into the grocery business. He really expanded, he went into politics and to owning property and that sort of thing.

  • 1 a Conversation with Elizabeth Cook by Frank Goodman (7/2005
A Conversation with Elizabeth Cook By Frank Goodman (7/2005, Puremusic.com) I admit it, a lot of seemingly everyday things are mysteries to me. But as I became more aware of and then deeply into the music of Elizabeth Cook, a new mystery moved up the list. Namely, how can you take a singer this great, with tunes of this caliber, who looks this gorgeous, and not be able to put it in the hoop? In this particular case, all the factors mentioned are in the extreme, so it seems like criminal ineptitude. It’s not that simple, of course. Her 2002 big label (Warners) debut Hey Y’all didn’t really see the exposure it was due, to understate the matter. It’s all too easy to deduce that it was considered too traditional, or “too Country for Country” as it’s come to be called around Music Row. On the other hand, Elizabeth’s authentically traditional country sound endeared her to the Grand Ole Opry and its fans. To date, she has appeared over 100 times on the Opry, more than many huge stars of the genre. I was fortunate enough to see her perform at a Billy Block show in town a while back, and was knocked out. Elizabeth’s manager David Macias is a friend, and he took me upstairs to meet her. She’s such a lovely and genuine person that it kind of bowls you over, you know what I mean. Her husband Tim Carroll was talking to a fan so I didn’t get to hang with him, but he’s also extremely talented, both as an artist in his own right and as her bandleader.

  • “Somebody's Gotta Wear a Pretty Skirt”
“Somebody’s gotta wear a pretty skirt”- Constructions of masculinity and femininity in modern country music Annica Malm English Advanced Level/15hp Department of Social and Behavioural studies/University West Fall term 2016 Supervisor: Anna Elgemark Examiner: Rickard Ramhöj Title: “Somebody’s gotta wear a pretty skirt”- constructions of masculinity and femininity in modern country music Author: Annica Malm Supervisor: Anna Elgemark Abstract Constructions of masculinity and femininity can be reinforced through written and spoken language, creating stereotypes and inequality between genders. Gender representations in music lyrics have been studied for various genres, but the country music genre has been somewhat underrepresented. Considering the fact that country is seen as the authentic music genre and culture of the US, it is relevant to study how gender is represented in relation to society. The aim of this study is to investigate how masculinity and femininity is represented in 15 modern country songs from the last decade retrieved from Billboard.com. The hypothesis for this study is that modern country music should have a less stereotypical view on men and women than older country music. Critical Discourse Analysis has been used to analyse the lyrics, and metaphors, similes and verbs have been analysed in order to reach the aim. The country music culture has been the framework to interpret the results, as well as the view of femininity and masculinity as social constructions. The findings point to more exaggerated versions of masculinity and more stereotypical depictions of femininity being represented in the lyrics than older research made about country music and gender.
