MG 163: DAVID C. CARPENTER fonds Dates: nd, 1834-2015; 1976-1999 (predominant). Extent: 20.4 m. of textual material + photographs + audio and video tapes. Biographical Note: Though born in Edmonton in 1941, David Carpenter’s youth was spent in Edmonton, Jasper, Banff and Lake Louise. Graduating in 1964 with a B.A. and B.Ed. from the University of Alberta, he taught high school for one year before entering a M.A program in English at the University of Oregon. In 1967 he returned to Edmonton, M.A. in hand, and resumed his high school teaching career. Two years later he enrolled in the Ph.D. program at the University of Alberta, graduating in 1973. Dr. Carpenter spent the next two years as a post-doc at the University of Manitoba before accepting an appointment in Canadian Literature, Department of English, at the University of Saskatchewan. He was promoted through the ranks, becoming full professor in 1986. In the mid-1970s, Carpenter began to write seriously as a vocation. This early work was to become part of a series of interconnected works of fiction (Jokes for the Apocalypse, Jewels, and God’s Bedfellows) published between 1985 and 1988. In the late 1980s, Carpenter began work on his first full length novel, Rider Wrong, and in 1994 published his first book of essays, Writing Home. 1995 and 1996 saw publication of his first how-to book, Fishing in the West, and his second book of essays, Courting Saskatchewan. Recent books include Trout Stream Creed (collection of poetry, 2003) and The Ketzer (a novella, 2003). -

University of British Columbia, 1997-2000 Dissertation Title: Education to Nurture the Soul: An Interpretive Study of a Professional Leadership Institute for Librarians. Brief Abstract of Dissertation The purpose of this research was to capture, describe and interpret an adult educational leadership institute that moves learners in an emotional, soulful and spiritual way. Profound transformational learning was revealed through comments such as: This has been one of the most profound experiences of my life; and, those five days were pure magic. These comments from adult learners are the result of experiences at Northern Exposure to Leadership (NEL). The Institute invites senior librarians to serve as mentors and facilitators, and is a five-day, residential Institute held every eighteen months at Emerald Lake Lodge, near Field, British Columbia, Canada. This research was explored within an adult education framework. It indicated that soul in education is nurtured through: relationships with mentors, peers and self; the creation of a caring community; ceremony, symbol and the sacred; risk; struggle and disclosure; ethics; creativity and imagination; physical environment; residential factors; and the use of a variety of teaching methods with a concentration on experiential learning. -

kostash/literary nonfiction/feb 2010 1 LITERARY NONFICTION IN SASKATCHEWAN The Literary History of Saskatchewan Volume I ~ Beginnings, ed. David Carpenter. Regina: Coteau Books, 2013. Definition “Literary nonfiction” is the preferred term for a genre known variously as creative nonfiction, literary journalism, narrative prose, creative documentary and nonfiction novel. It has its contemporary roots in the New Journalism of the 1960s and 1970s when, in magazines and books, writers of nonfiction developed "a style of journalism characterized by the use of subjective and fictional elements so as to elicit an emotional response from the reader," to cite the definition of the Oxford Canadian Dictionary. Its materials are documentary, its techniques novelistic and even poetic. It is increasingly the practice not to hyphenate non-fiction, on the grounds that is a genre in its own right, not a non-genre. Although such a hybrid genre has been practised at least since the eighteenth century, it still provokes controversy whenever readers or reviewers expose as “made-up” what they had assumed to be “factual.” The point is that, as a genre, it occupies a very wide spectrum of types, from the point-of-view reportage of New Journalism, to narrative-driven travel writing, memoir and biography, to the reflective or metaphysical or lyrical essay, to boundary-breaching experimental prose-poetry. (The factualness of facts is more properly the concern of journalism.) Publishers have got into the habit of signaling a work of nonfiction, literary or journalistic, by adding a subtitle, especially when the work in question is a hybrid of several styles; works of fiction and poetry never have subtitles, unless by ironic intention.
