Alex Kozinski was appointed United States Circuit Judge for the Ninth Circuit on November 7, 1985. He graduated from UCLA, receiving an A.B. degree cum laude in 1972, and from UCLA Law School, receiving a J.D. degree in 1975, finishing first in his dass. At UCLA School of Law, he was the managing editor of the Law Review and received the Distinguished Achievement Award. Kozinski spent the next year as law clerk to Anthony M. Kennedy, then a ninth circuit judge, now a justice on the U.S. Supreme Court. The following year, he clerked for Warren Burger, former chief justice of the United States. In 1977, he entered private practice with Forry, Colbert, Singer & Gelles in . From 1979-81, he practiced with Covington & Burling in Washington, D.C. From 1980-81, Kozinski served as deputy legal counsel to the president-elect, then as assistant counsel in the Office of Counsel to President Ronald Reagan. Between 1980 and 1982, Kozinski headed the Merit Systems Protection Board's Office of Special Counsel. The special counsel investigates allegations of federal agency misconduct toward federal employees and, if necessary, brings a lawsuit before the board to correct the problem. Beginning in 1982 and until 1985, Kozinski served as chief judge of the U.S. Claims Court, which hears all non-tort claims for money damages brought against the federal government. At 35, Kozinski became the youngest federal appeals court judge in this century. (William Howard Taft was 34 when named to a federal appeals court in 1892.) On the bench, he is a lively questioner, unfailingly courteous to attorneys. He exudes an unbridled enthusiasm for the law. He was born in Bucharest in 1950 and immigrated with his family to the United States at the age of 12, settling first in Baltimore and later in Los Angeles. Judge Kozinski is married to Marcy Jane Tiffany and has three children: Yale, Wyatt and Qayton. DANIEL E. LUNGREN

Daniel E. Lungren was administered the Oath of Office by the Chief Justice of the California Supreme Court, Malcolm Lucas, on January 7, 1991, thereby becoming California's twenty-ninth attorney general. Prior to his inauguration as attorney general, Lungren was a partner in the Sacramento law firm of Diepenbrock, Wulff, Plant and Hannegan. First elected to the United States Congress in November of 1978, Lungren served from January 1979 to January 1989, representing the 34th and then the 42nd Congressional District of California. During his decade of service in Congress, Lungren earned great respect and admiration from Democrats and Republicans for his hard work, intelligence and reasoned approach to complex and controversial issues. The hallmark of Lungren's persistent dedication to achieving real reform for the nation's criminal justice system came with his successful effort to pass President Reagan's Comprehensive Crime Control Act of 1984. This Act has been called the most far reaching and substantial reform of the federal criminal justice system in American history. Today, as Attorney General, Lungren is California's chief law enforcement officer. He oversees approximately 3,800 state Department of Justice employees, with an annual budget of $290 million; among those employees are more than 625 attorneys and 450 sworn peace officers located throughout California. Lungren began his professional career as an assistant to former United States Senator George Murphy in 1969. He also served on the staff of United States Senator Bill Brock in 1970 and was the special assistant to the Co-Chairman of the Republican National Committee from 1971-1972. He joined the law firm of Ball, Hunt, Hart, Brown and Baerwitz in 1973 and continued there until his admission to Congress in 1979. He graduated with honors from the University of Notre Dame in 1968, attended the University of Southern California Law School, and earned his Juris Doctor degree from the Law Center at Georgetown University in-1971. Lungren and his wife of 21 years, Barbara (Bobbi), have three children: Jeffrey, Kelly, and Kathleen. The Lungrens live in Roseville, California. TERRY M. GILES

Terry M. Giles was born in St. Louis, Missouri in 1948. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from California State Fullerton in B70, and a Juris Doctor degree from Pepperdine University School of Law in 1974, where he was a moot court champion. During that same year, Giles passed the California Bar and established a law firm in Tustin, California. Since 1975, Giles' law firm has successfully handled a number of civil and criminal cases throughout California, 11 different states, and three foreign countries. Having had the experience of winning acquittals in criminal homicide trials and multi-million dollar verdicts in civil cases, Giles now handles only a few personally selected cases. His speciality office contains five lawyers and a total staff of 15. Giles' cases have been the subject of much newspaper and media coverage, including a television movie and two books. For the past five years, Giles has concentrated on various business ventures. He is the president and owner of Giles Enterprises, the umbrella company which Giles uses to buy and sell businesses. Giles' companies include Pacific National Bank (California), a personally owned bank holding company with assets of nearly $200 million; TG Consolidated Capital, which is parent to a cluster of companies whose businesses include a diversified range of investments including oil and gas production and numerous real estate holdings; Magicians and Alchemists Guild, Inc. (California), a magic-themed restaurant and entertainment facility which is now being promoted and produced world-wide; Lasal Corporation (Nevada); and Merchant Overseas Property Group, Ltd. and Merchant House International Limited, (Ireland). In 1985, Giles and his wife, Patti, established the Giles Scholarship, which provides funds to top students of each third-year class at Pepperdine University School of Law. In 1986, Giles successfully defended ComputerLand, the world's largest retailer of personal computers during a three month jury trial. He currently sits on the seven-person Board of Directors which monitors this retailing giant comprised of 840 stores in 42 countries with $3 billion in annual sales. A member of Pepperdine University's School of Law Board of Visitors, Giles and his wife reside in Tustin Hills. IN MEMORY OF

My Philosophy

To live as nobly as I can And be in all respects, a man. To take my share of good or ill, Rely on hope and honor still. To keep ambition's fires aflame; Strive for perfection, not for fame. To share a life of happiness With those good friends in whom I'm blest.

To be the same when no one's near, As when I am with friends most dear. To be courageous, undismayed, By all mistakes that I have made. To cling to honesty always With peace of mind to dose my days. To take from life the very best and live life with the keenest zest. To keep my self-esteem intact In what 1 think and how I act. To be concerned wholeheartedly For those in need of charity. To do for others willingly, What I would have them do for me. To give to others some love each day; Love is not love till given away.

To keep my faith in God and truth As I have kept it since my youth. To leave some monument behind, My having lived to keep in mind. To do the best that I can do And let that stand my record true.

These resolutions made by me Shall be my life's philosophy. - Odell S. McConnell Founder, Odell S. McConnell Law Center JURIS DOCTOR

That God is

That He is revealed uniquely in Christ

That the educational process may not, with impunity, be divorced from the divine process

That the student, as a person of infinite dignity, is the heart of the educational enterprise

That the quality of student life is a valid concern of the University

That truth, having nothing to fear from investigation, should be pursued relentlessly in every discipline

That spiritual commitment, tolerating no excuse for mediocrity, demands the highest standards of academic excellence

That freedom, whether spiritual, intellectual, or economic, is indivisible

That knowledge calls, ultimately, for a life of service
