Dr Lucija Čok, Rector of the UP

University of Primorska and International Relations Office

Founded on 29 January 2003 by the Slovene Parliament, the University of Primorska (UP) is the youngest of the three Slovene universities. The newly established university joined together three faculties, two colleges and two research institutes of the that had previously operated as independent institutions. The UP was established not only in an area bordering Croatia and Italy, but also at a meeting point of international cultural and economic trends. Its mission is based on the culture and tradition of areas of contact, on the collaboration with the regional economy orientated towards western Europe and the Mediterranean, and on the vision of the European Higher Education Area and European Research Area. The main objectives of this young university are to carry out high quality study and research programs and to promote the excellence of educational and research work in Slovenia and abroad. By assuring autonomy in the fields of education, research and financial functioning, 5 by cherishing academic culture and by taking responsibility for results of the study processes, the UP will transmit knowledge to future generations in order to form inquisitive thinkers and professionals. General Information About Slovenia

Slovenia is an independent republic bordering Italy, Austria, Hungary and Croatia with a surface area of just over 20.000 sq km and a population of about two million. Since May 1st 2004 it has been a member of the European Union. They say that small is beautiful, and that holds true for Slovenia as well. Although small, the country has a rich landscape, from beaches, snow-capped mountains, hills awash in grape vines and wide plains blanketed in sunflowers to Gothic churches, baroque palaces and Art Nouveau civic buildings. Its incredible mixture of climates brings warm Mediterranean breezes up to the foothills of the Alps, where it can snow in summer. You can find more info on Slovenia on the following web site: http://www.slovenia-tourism.si/

29 The Slovene coast

The Slovene coast measures 46.6 kilometres and is covered with abundant vegetation. It has a characteristic Mediterranean climate partly influenced by the continental interior, with mild winters (average temperature of 5° C) and warm dry summers (average temperature of 27°C). The population is mainly Slovene, with an Italian minority. The official bilingual policy in the area ensures that the Italian language and other cultural values of the Italian minority are preserved equally. The three costal towns of Koper, Izola and Piran attract visitors with their historical city centres (more info on www.slo-istra.com). The towns of Koper, Izola and Piran

Koper is one of the most picturesque towns in the northern Istrian peninsula given its unique historical core. It lies in the south-western part of Slovenia on the Adriatic coast, 20 km south of Trieste, Italy and about 30 km north of the Croatian border. The town municipality of Koper is one of the largest in the wider Primorska region with regard to area and population. Considering its degree of economic development, traffic infrastructure and lively cultural life Koper is among the most developed areas of Slovenia. Koper is not only a trade and industrial centre of , but in many ways its cultural focal point. The cultural activities in Koper are varied and rich. There are museums, galleries, the cinema, the theatre, and a well-stocked library with a special section containing literature on the surrounding area. Koper has also several modern sports and recreation facilities. A rapid development in the field of higher education in the past years has lead 30 to the creation of the third Slovene university, the University of Primorska.

Izola is a coastal town with a rich fishing tradition, which is still an integral part of the modern tourist scene and local cuisine. The ancient part of the town is located on an island that was already inhabited in the first century A.D. and later connected to the mainland by a stone bridge. The town was fortified. In the beginning of the 19th century the walls were demolished and the ruins used to fill up the sea between the island and the coast. Owing to its favourable position, the Izola marina has developed into one of the leading centres of nautical tourism. The old seaport of Piran lies at the end of the Piran peninsula. The town was surrounded by walls in the middle ages, parts of which are still preserved. The whole town is protected as a cultural and historical monument and it has preserved its medieval layout with narrow streets and compact houses, which rise in steps from the coastal lowland into the hills and give the whole area a typical Mediterranean look. Today it is an administrative and supply centre and also an important coastal tourist resort with hotels, restaurants and holiday houses, the Maritime Museum and an aquarium, cultural institutions and events.

Portorož boasts of having the longest tourist tradition in Slovenia and offers comfortable hotels and modern swimming pools, restaurants and events. It is also a popular conference centre. Portorož has a casino, a sport airport and marina. It is an internationally known holiday centre and climatic health seaside resort.

By plane The nearest airports are the International Airport of Ljubljana, Slovenia (Brnik - 23 km north-west of Ljubljana and 135 km from Koper) and the International Airport of Trieste, Italy (Ronchi - 62 km from Koper). There are very good bus services connecting Koper to Ljubljana and Trieste.

By train There are regular train lines connecting the capital city Ljubljana with Italy, Austria, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Hungary, and Croatia. From Ljubljana you can 32 reach Koper by bus or local trains.

By bus It is also possible to reach Slovenia and Koper from neighbouring countries by bus. Internal bus transport is well organized and relatively inexpensive.

By sea From May to October an alternative way of getting to the Slovenian coast from Italy is by boat. Three times a week there is a boat line between Venice (Italy) and Izola (about 6 km from Koper). Accommodation

The International Relations Office and the Student Residence of the University of Primorska will help you find accommodation. The ŠOUP publishes Kažin (‘Chaos’), the magazine of UP students, organizes exhibitions of young artists in the Zapor student gallery, and finances the Menander student theatre, which will soon put on a new performance. Together with the university, it has established the Academic Choir of the UP. The office for international co-operation and tourism helps students spend their holidays abroad and attend a summer university, conference or course. The office also gives support to Erasmus students through the Erasmus Student Network (ESN), provides information on scholarships, volunteering, traveling, industrial training placement abroad, etc. The office for sports and recreation provides for the students’ daily recreation (aerobics, ball games) and organizes various sporting events and competitions (basketball, football, volleyball, bowling). Students who are interested in other forms of education should contact the office for education and student counseling, which organizes not only weekly movie nights and travelogues, but also various courses, workshops, lectures and other activities. These activities offer variety and make for a more interesting daily routine. The office for student welfare is in charge of student housing, student food subsidy, health and ecology. It also helps students with special needs, student families and provides counseling in other welfare-related matters.
