    WHITE WASHED OUT: ASIAN AMERICAN REPRESENTATION IN MEDIA HELEN YANG Yang 2 Abstract Since the Oscars first began in 1929, less than one percent of annual Academy Award nominations have included Asian Americans. Within the one percent, they have only become notably recognized for their contributions as the tokenized character – a product of Westernized racism and discrimination – while white actors are chosen to fulfill lead Asian roles in an act of “Yellowface”. Using a three-pronged research model of statistical, historical, and psycho-sociolinguistic analyses, this study examines the societal implications of misrepresentation within the media and its affects over minority and race relations throughout the United States. Using information from the United States census and summary statistics over the demographic compositions of the Oscars, disaggregated data is used in conjunction with a historical breakdown of Asian American chronicles and documented immigrant studies. Hour-long interviews were also conducted with volunteers to inspect the negative repercussions of the model minority myth and dissect the role that media plays in cultivating implicit bias against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in current generations. Overall, the study discovered how underrepresentation negatively correlates with the self-esteems of Asian American individuals. The lack of accurate representation within the media significantly debilitates the confidence and self-image of Asian Americans, which contributes to long-term disadvantages during their academic lives and when pursuing careers within the Humanities and Arts. These findings suggest that misrepresentation of minorities within the media fuels systemic racism and perpetuates normalized notions built on stereotypes and falsely imposed identities of Asian Americans.

Unit Description An extension to the current model for treating problem gambling is obtained by including strategies for optimal gambling, correct gambling and eradication. Part 1 outlines correct gambling where the analysis of casino games is derived such that a player can gamble with the aim of minimizing losses. The analysis obtains distributional characteristics of profits, the distribution of profits and the percent house margin. This analysis is applied to games of Keno, Roulette, Big Wheel, Let it Ride Poker, Casino Stud Poker, 3 Card Stud Poker, Casino War, Red Dog and Video Poker. The probabilities of obtaining outcomes in basic strategy Blackjack, Pontoon and Pai Gow Poker are combinatorically difficult to calculate. However, there are strategies in such games and these strategies are obtained. Mathematical and logical reasoning to poker machine regulations are given as suggestions for amendments to the “the Standard” with the purpose to increase consumer protection. An online casino promotion offer is analysed to determine if the offer is worthwhile and which is the best game to play. Part 2 outlines optimal gambling where the analysis of casino games in video poker and blackjack are derived such that a gambler can expect a long-term profit.

    1 Running head: RACIST STEREOTYPES & ASIAN EXCLUSION No Curry, No Rice: Exploring the Effects of How Racist Stereotypes and the Exclusion of Asian Representation in Western Media Impact the Identity of Gay Asian Men Preston Ng San Francisco State University 2 RACIST STEREOTYPES AND ASIAN EXCLUSION Abstract What is seen in Western movies, television, advertisements and pornography play a tremendous role in shaping viewers’ perceptions about ourselves and other people. This paper explores how racist stereotypes and the exclusion of Asian representation in Western media impact the—self and perceived—identity of gay Asian men (GAM). Reviewing academic literature such as scholarly, peer-reviewed journals, books, and articles from and about gay Asian men, gay male sexuality, and gender studies, proves that not only do racist stereotypes and the exclusion of Asian representation in Western media contribute to the erosion of GAM self-esteem and self- identity but other gay men’s perceptions of GAM. This in turn perpetuates gendered hierarchies, encourages discrimination in dating and sex, and maintains power imbalances within relationships between GAM and White men. Although the Western media’s historical exclusion of Asian faces and stories helped lead to these imbalances, the new “Asian Wave” of representation in Hollywood is looking to challenge racist stereotypes and the myopic lens through which Asian men have been viewed for so long.
