Eating insects is also interesting in terms of low greenhouse gas emissions and low land use. In contrast to tropical countries, where most of the 2000 edible insect species are traditionally consumed, the concept of eating insects is still new to Western culture and diet. Culture and eating habits exert a great influence on what is considered edible in the Mediterranean area, especially in Italy, where the preservation of culinary traditions is a predominant factor affecting dietary behaviour. The purpose of this narrative paper is to provide an overview of the main topics related to entomophagy. -

Chapter 15 Chapter 15 CENTRAL AND EASTERN AFRICA: OVERVIEW The region as treated here is comprised mainly of Angola, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Congo (Brazzaville), Congo (Kinshasa) (formerly Zaire), Kenya, Malawi, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia. The wide variety of insects eaten includes at least 163 species, 121 genera, 34 families and 10 orders. Of this group the specific identity is known for 128 species, only the generic identity for another 21, only the family identity of another 12 and only the order identity of one. Gomez et al (1961) estimated that insects furnished 10% of the animal proteins produced annually in Congo (Kinshasa). Yet, in this region, as in others, insect use has been greatly under-reported and under-studied. Until recently, for example, the specific identity was known for fewer than twenty species of insects used in Congo (Kinshasa), but, in a careful study confined only to caterpillars and only to the southern part of the country, Malaisse and Parent (1980) distinguished 35 species of caterpillars used as food. The extent of insect use throughout the region is probably similar to that in Congo (Kinshasa) and Zambia, the best-studied countries. Research is needed. Caterpillars and termites are the most widely marketed insects in the region, but many others are also important from the food standpoint, nutritionally, economically or ecologically. As stated by this author (DeFoliart 1989): "One can't help but wonder what the ecological and nutritional maps of Africa might look like today if more effort had been directed toward developing some of these caterpillar, termite, and other food insect resources." The inclusion of food insects in the Africa-wide Exhibition on Indigenous Food Technologies held in Nairobi, Kenya, in 1995 is indicative of the resurgence of interest in this resource by the scientific community of the continent. -

INTRODUCTION The utilization of insects as a sustainable and secure source of animal-based food for the human diet has continued to increase in popularity in recent years (Ash et al., 2010; Crabbe, 2012; Dossey, 2013; Dzamba, 2010; FAO, 2008; Gahukar, 2011; Katayama et al., 2008; Nonaka, 2009; Premalatha et al., 2011; Ramos- Elorduy, 2009; Smith, 2012; Srivastava et al., 2009; van Huis, 2013; van Huis et al., 2013; Vantomme et al., 2012; Vogel, 2010; Yen, 2009a, b). Throughout the world, a large portion of the human population consumes insects as a regular part of their diet (Fig. 18.1). Thousands of edible species have been identified (Bukkens, 1997; Bukkens and Paoletti, 2005; DeFoliart, 1999; Ramos-Elorduy, 2009). However, in regions of the world where Western cultures dominate, such as North America and Europe, and in developing countries heavily influenced by Western culture, mass media have negatively influenced the public’s percep- tion of insects by creating or reinforcing fears and phobias (Kellert, 1993; Looy and Wood, 2006). Nonetheless, the potentially substantial benefits of farming and utilizing insects as a primary dietary component, particularly to supplement or replace foods and food ingredients made from vertebrate livestock, are gain- ing increased attention even in Europe and the United States. Accepted 16 December, 2011 Acridoidea is a superfamily within the Orthoptera order that comprises a group of short-horned insects commonly called grasshoppers. Grasshopper and locust species are major pests of grasslands and crops in all continents except Antarctica. Economically and historically, locusts and grasshoppers are two of the most destructive agricultural pests. The most important locust species belong to the genus Schistocerca and populate America, Africa, and Asia. Some grasshoppers considered to be important pests are the Melanoplus species, Camnula pellucida in North America, Brachystola magna and Sphenarium purpurascens in northern and central Mexico, and Oedaleus senegalensis and Zonocerus variegatus in Africa. Previous studies have classified these species based on specific characteristics. This review includes six headings. The first discusses the main species of grasshoppers and locusts; the second focuses on their worldwide distribution; the third describes their biology and life cycle; the fourth refers to climatic factors that facilitate the development of grasshoppers and locusts; the fifth discusses the action or reaction of grasshoppers and locusts to external or internal stimuli and the sixth refers to elements to design management strategies with emphasis on prevention. -

El Psilido Asiático de los Cítricos actualmente es la principal plaga de la citricultura en el mundo por ser vector de la bacteria Candidatus liberobacter que ocasiona el Huanglongbing. Tanto adultos como ninfas de cuarto y quinto instar pueden ser vectores de esta enfermedad por lo que su control es básico para minimizar este problema. Se realizó esta investigación para conocer el comportamiento de los estados inmaduros de la plaga a varias alternativas químicas de control. El análisis de los datos de mortalidad muestra que las poblaciones de Diaphorina tratadas con: clorpirifós, dimetoato, clotianidin, dinotefurán, thiametoxan, endosulfán, imidacloprid, lambdacialotrina, zetacipermetrina, y lambdacialotrina registraron mortalidades superiores al 85%. Por otra parte, las poblaciones tratadas con: pymetrozine (pyridine azomethines) y spirotetramat (regulador de crecimiento de la síntesis de lípidos) a las dosis evaluadas no presentaron efecto tóxico por contacto o efecto fumigante sobre la población antes mencionada. The Asian Citrus Psyllid, vector of Candidatus Liberobacter, bacteria that causes Huanglongbing disease, is currently the major pest of citrus in the world. Both, adults and nymphs of fourth and fifth instar can be vectors this pathogen, and therefore their control is essential to prevent increase and spread of disease. This research was carried out to evaluate the biological response of the immature stages of the pest to several chemical alternatives. -

Staple food products are viewed as having insufficient micronutrient contents and limiting amino acids (lysine, tryptophan and threonine). Therefore, in following a monotonous diet of maize and wheat products, the risk of micronutrient deficiencies increases. Even after mandatory fortification of staple food products in South Africa in 2003, high levels of micronutrient deficiencies still exist. In this research assignment, the potential of edible insects frequently consumed in South Africa, in ameliorating South Africa’s most prevalent nutrient deficiencies (iron, zinc, folate, vitamin A and iodine) was assessed. -

Si une information de base est à présent disponible concernant la diversité des chenilles consommées en République du Congo-Brazzaville, nous ne disposons pas de données préliminaires solides concernant leur distribution, la littérature qui leur a été consacrées, leur saisonnalité et leur cycle de vie, leurs dénominations locales et leurs plantes hôtes. C’est l’objet du présent article, qui en outre permet de dégager les domaines qui nécessitent des études plus approfondies. Vingt taxons sont pris en considération, dont seize identifiés au niveau de l’espèce. Seuls deux cycles de vie sont à présent connus. Quatre-vingt-neuf noms vernaculaires sont cités. Ces chenilles se nourrissent d’au moins 40 plantes hôtes qui sont citées ainsi que des sources de documentation concernant ces dernières. Abstract: Human consumption of Lepidoptera is a subject of current interest. Though basic information is presently available regarding the diversity of caterpillars eaten in Congo-Brazzaville, no robust data regarding their distribution, reference material, seasonality and life cycle, local names and host-plants is available. The purpose of this article, which also identifies areas that require further study, is to address this gap.
