Prior to reading the DB Full Color Freeza Arc series I had not read any DB Manga. I had, however, seen DB in Spanish dub, and in Japanese with English subtitles; DBZ in English, and Spanish dubs and in Japanese with English Subtitles; and DBGT in Spanish, and English dubs, and in Japanese with English subtitles several times. So I am a pretty big fan and I was expecting pretty big things with this graphic novel/manga.It did not disappoint.Vol. 4 covers chapters 52 (Freeza vs. Gohan) through 68 (Kaio-Ken Times 20!!!)The DBZ story is there in its full glory but, unlike the anime, there isnt as much build up with power-ups and screaming. Instead, everything is in your face, very raw--as it should be. I will not take away stars from manga for lacking what anime can convey very easily. I will admire the manga for capturing the story as its creator, Akira Toriyama, conceived it and give it a well deserved 5 star rating.I really liked the DB Full Color Freeza Arc series and highly recommend it to anyone interested. I cannot wait for the Android and Cell Arcs to be published in the USA and, in the meantime, will quell my DB hunger by watching the ongoing Super series and rereading this manga. To meet this goal I have used Toriyama’s successful Dragon Ball series, which has enjoyed continued popularity right from its first publication in the 1980s. I analyse the parallelism between Dragon Ball and a classic Chinese novel, Journey to the West, its main source. However, there are many other folkloric references present in Dragon Ball connected to religion and folktales. The author illustrates this relationship with examples taken from the anime that correspond to the traditional Japanese Folklore but that are used with a subversive goal which makes it a rich source for analysis and for Literary Education. They appear to stimulate many aspects of the learning process and can help with the development of links between ideas. Given these pedagogical premises, we conducted a project called Costellazione Manga, in which we considered astronomical concepts present in several manga and anime (Japanese comics and animations) and highlighted the physics behind them. These references to astronomy allowed us to introduce interesting topics of modern astrophysics and communicate astronomy-related concepts to a large spectrum of people. In this paper, we describe the methodology and techniques that we developed and discuss the results of our project. Depending on the comic or anime considered, we can introduce general topics such as the difference between stars, planets and galaxies or ideas such as the possibility of finding life on other planets, the latest discoveries of Earth-like planets orbiting other stars or the detection of complex organic molecules in the interstellar space. When presenting the night sky and the shapes of constellations, we can also describe how the same stars are perceived and grouped by different cultures. The project outcomes indicate that Costellazione Manga is a powerful tool to popularise astronomy and stimulate important aspects of learning development, such as curiosity and crit- ical thinking.
