From Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate October 22nd, 2020. I’ve highlighted a few producers whose latest releases stood out among their peers. They represent cellar-worthy wines, new brands and affordable selections appropriate for any occasion. Cheers! -Erin Brooks From Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate 2018 One of my favorite wineries in Paso Robles, Brian Terrizzi's Giornata is dedicated to exploring the potential of Italian varieties in this part of California. They do a great job with all their cuvées, but I have a soft spot for their beautiful Fiano, a grape that I'd love to see planted more extensively in this region. - William Kelley 2019 Giornata Bianco - 90 Points $20 - The 2019 il Campo Bianco is a blend of 72% Falanghina and 28% Pinot Grigio. It has very pretty aromas of beeswax, baklava and saline with loads of floral character and a core of white peaches. The palate is light-bodied and textural with lots of juiciness and uplift, finishing uncomplicated and fresh. This will show best with food and will be extremely versatile in terms of pairings. 250 cases produced. 2019 Giornata Fiano - 93 Points $30 - The 2019 Fiano from Giornata is a gorgeous wine I couldn't put down. Made without oak, it has an open-knit perfume of elderflower, white peaches, baker's yeast and a honey-nut undercurrent. The palate is medium-bodied and super silky with expansive, perfumed, honeyed fruit layers uplifted by addicting freshness that calls you in for another sip on the very long finish. 150 cases were made. 2019 Giornata Vermentino - 92 Points $30 - The 2019 Vermentino has a very alluring perfume of white peaches, quince, spring honey and loads upon loads of white flower nuance. The palate is medium-bodied, rounded, expansive and perfumed with yeasty touches, lip-smacking freshness and a long finish. Yum! 100 cases made. 2018 Giornata Rosso - 91 Points $20 - The 2018 il Campo Rosso has a pale to medium ruby color. It's a blend of 75% Sangiovese, 15% Barbera and 10% Aglianico with pretty strawberry and blueberry fruits plus wafts of potpourri, leather, spices and a balsamic uplift. Medium to full-bodied, its expansive fruits are accented by bitters character, supported by a chalky frame and finishing bright and juicy. This enjoyable, pleasantly rustic wine punches far above its price point and will be perfect for tomato-based sauces and dishes. 400 cases produced. 2019 Giornata Barbera - 91 Points $20 - The 2019 Barbera is an immediately approachable wine that captures pretty California fruit without losing echoes of the style from northern Italy. Pale to medium ruby-purple in the glass, it opens with classic tar aromas over blue and black fruits with lifts of citrus peel and floral perfume. The medium-bodied palate is bright, fresh, juicy and lifted with a perfumed finish. This would be great served slightly chilled. 600 cases produced. 2017 Giornata Nebbiolo - 92 Points $45 - The 2017 Nebbiolo comes from the Luna Matta vineyard and was aged 22 months in neutral oak. It has a pale garnet color and classic balsamic lift on the nose, with aromas of tar, roses, amaro, citrus peel, iron and earth. The medium-bodied palate offers classic bitterness and perfume with a pleasantly firm, rustic frame and bright freshness on the long, layered finish. Lovely! 150 cases produced. 2017 Giornata Sangiovese - 93 Points $35 - The 2017 Sangiovese, aged 22 months in neutral oak, has a medium ruby color and scents of sour cherries, dried violet, burnt orange peel, warm earth and iron. The palate is medium-bodied with a pleasantly rustic frame and earth and bitters-laced fruits, and it finishes long, juicy and layered. 200 cases were made. 2017 Giornata Gemellaia - 93 Points $50 - This is the only wine in the Giornata portfolio that is aged in new oak, and it's styled like an IGT from Tuscany. The 2017 Gemellaia is a blend of 70% Sangiovese, 20% Merlot and 10% Petit Verdot aged 22 months in 50% new oak. Medium ruby-purple in color, it offers ripe blue and red berry fruits with accents of leather, dried violet, citrus peel and graphite.
