Kissin In The Sand has only raced twice thus far in 2020 for Katz and co-owner Hatfield Stables, but she certainly seems to have found herself over the winter after a somewhat disappointing two-for-17 record in her 4-year- old campaign last year. “For as many years as I’ve been in this busi- ness, I don’t think I’ve fully appreciated, perhaps more with pacing fillies than almost any cate- gory, the step between 3 and 4 is just enormous. It is not speed because she went (1:)47 4/5 as a 3-year-old. I wanted to stop with her at least three differ- ent times last year, but Nancy loves Kissin In The Sand and she worked her heart out on her. All winter Nancy told me that she has grown and that she is more powerful.” Powerful is certainly the right word to describe Kissin In The Sand so far. Taylor eyeing another Hambo prize with Back Of The Neck

By Jay Bergman

Howard Taylor has owned literally thousands of horses over the years in whole or in part, yet it’s clear having a horse that could win the Hambletonian is high on his list of priorities. Two years ago he shared the winner’s circle spotlight after Atlanta captured the sport’s most elite prize at The Meadowlands. Now just a few weeks away from the 2020 edition, he has a colt in Back Of The Neck that was off the radar a month ago but is clearly in focus now. Back Of The Neck looks for his second stakes victory in a row in one of two Stanley Dancer Memorial divisions at The Meadowlands on Saturday night (July 18). “Stefan (Balazsi-Order By Stable) had been telling me for years that Ready Cash was the best trotting stallion in the world,” Taylor said, going back some time. “He tried to sell me this colt as a weanling but I wasn’t interested at the time.” Taylor became a bit more interested when the horse was up for sale at the Harrisburg auction in 2018 and bought the colt for $150,000. Lisa Photo “When Stefan asked to buy back into the horse I was really happy Back Of The Neck went last to first to win the Reynolds on July because I knew he believed in him,” said Taylor. While Back Of The Neck’s breeder was pushing Taylor onto the sire side of the equation, the owner saw the dam’s side. “He’s got the hottest maternal family right now,” Taylor said. Over the past decade, harness racing has been blessed to have seen some of the best trotting mares the sport has ever known compete.
