Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized. -

We are here at Fordham University on April 7, 2006 with Jimmy Merchant, an original and founding member of Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers, who has also had a career as an artist. And with us today, doing the interviews, are Alessandro Buffa, Lorreta Dosorna, Brian Purnell, and Mark Naison. Jimmy, can you tell us a little about your family and where they came from originally? Jimmy Merchant (JM): My mom basically came from Philadelphia. My dad – his family is from the Bahamas. He – my dad – was shifted over to the south as a youngster. His mother was from the Bahamas and she moved into the South – South Carolina, something like that – and he grew up there. -

A SCATTERED, SMOTHERED & COVERED CHRISTMAS A Waffle House Christmas Musical written by Kaine Riggan (It is Christmas Eve at a Waffle House just off Interstate 24 in Murfreesboro, TN, just 20 miles outside of Nashville. As the lights come up, wee see one gentleman sitting in a booth drinking coffee and having a bowl of chili. A quirky little waitress names Rita enters, obviously in a good mood. She is somewhere between plain and attractive and somewhere between thirty-five and fifty-five, although it is somewhat difficult to judge where in either category she clocks in. She pours out the old coffee (regular) and starts a new pot. She picks up a second pot (decaf) and smells it and decides to keep it. Suddenly, she notices the audience for the first time.) RITA Well shoot fire! If I’d known all ya’ll were gonna be here tonight, I’d a spent more time on this hair. (She quickly adjusts her hairdo) What do you think Harold? Is that better or should I just wear my bad hair day bonnet? (referring to her Waffle House paper hat) (HAROLD mumbles a grouchy, unintelligible response) Oh, chip up, Harold. It’s Christmas Eve! Don’t you just love Christmas Eve? (HAROLD starts to mumble again but she talks right over his response) Awe, there’s just something about this place on Christmas Eve. It’s magical… like there’s something special in the air. HAROLD (acknowledging himself) Sorry! RITA That is not exactly what I had in mind (shouting towards the kitchen) Bert, get in here and change this chili out. -

LAURA NYRO’S ELI AND THE THIRTEENTH CONFESSION: TRANSCENDING THE DICHOTOMIES OF THE WOODSTOCK YEARS Andy Arleo Université de Nantes (CRINI) As Wavy Gravy says, if you can remember the sixties, you weren't really there (Van Ronk 141) Introduction1 As a member of the so-called Woodstock Generation, I am aware of the potential pitfalls of writing about this period. As Dave Van Ronk points out in his quote from Merry Prankster Wavy Gravy (Hugh Romney), memories of those times tend to be hazy. On the other hand, research on memory has shown that there is a “reminiscence bump,” that is “people tend to remember disproportionately more events from the period between their adolescence and early adulthood” (Foster 64). In any case, it is clear that memory, whether it is individual and collective, reconstructs past experience, and that my own experience of the era has inevitably flavored the content of this article, making it impossible to aspire completely to the traditional ideals of scholarly distance and detachment. Future generations of cultural analysts will no doubt reassess the Woodstock Years through different lenses. The name “Laura Nyro” may not ring a bell for many readers, as it did not for many of my students, colleagues and friends whom I have informally surveyed. This is understandable since, unlike other singer-songwriter icons of the period (e.g., Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, James Taylor), Nyro was never really in the mainstream, although her songs have often been covered by a broad spectrum of singers and bands in a remarkable variety of musical styles, sometimes achieving a fair amount of commercial success. -

The lyrics of thirty songs selected from the Decade-End Hot 100 Songs charts in the 2010s were analyzed using feminist theory, consisting of the aspects of objectification, inferiority, and gender stereotypes. Findings showed that fifteen song lyrics featured the objectification of women. In other words, women can be bought and sold and are generally perceived as objects for men’s desires, mostly in terms of sexual objects. -

Women in Sport’s work has an impact at all of these, however, the most important and our focus for this study, is around teenage years and the transition to adulthood, as habits and attitudes formed then, have a critical long-term impact on future engagement in sport and physical activity and form deep-rooted barriers which inhibit participation through life. This fundamentally needs to change. Our latest insight puts the spotlight on the wider world of teenage girls. We have put them at the heart of this research, through online ethnographic work, co-creation sessions and discussions, letting them lead our understanding. We also reviewed over 30 reports, shared knowledge and developed thinking together with 25 other organisations both from inside and outside the sports sector. This has helped us to start the journey of reframing how sport and physical activity can have both relevance and appeal during this time. -

WHO AM I REALLY?: QUESTIONING THE PATRIARCHAL “GIRL WORLD” TO FIND IDENTITY IN MEAN GIRLS, HEATHERS THE MUSICAL, AND CARRIE: THE MUSICAL MEGAN RENNER 105 Pages Both musicals and stories about teenage girls are genres that tend to be overlooked by scholars, and to not receive serious analysis. Some scholars may dismiss these genres as being shallow and unworthy of scrutiny through a critical lens. However, much may be learned about patriarchal influence on teenage girls in musicals such as Mean Girls, Heathers the Musical and Carrie: The Musical. This thesis analyzes the patriarchal influence on the teen girl characters in these three musicals, using Girl Studies and feminist theory. This study applies arguments that state that patriarchal influence is what causes girls to form cliques, in order for them to feel powerful in a world that disenfranchises them, and applies it to these musicals. -

Abstract: Lawrence Feia, a Madison, Wisconsin, resident, discusses his World War II Army service in the China-Burma-India Theater with the famed Merrill‘s Marauders, as a part of the 5307th Composite Unit (Provisional), and his combat experiences at Maingkwan, Walawbum, the Hukawng Valley, Nhpum Ga and Myityina. Drafted in 1942, Feia outlines his training that included Camp Wolters (Texas) for basic and Port-of-Spain, Trinidad, for jungle training. Assigned to the 33rd Infantry and suffering from the Trinidadian heat, the entire battalion volunteered for an unknown ―special mission‖ only because they would go home on leave before being shipped to unknown places overseas. Feia tells of receiving new light clothes, jungle boots, and supplies for overseas duty at Camp Stoneman (California) and reports that he ―damned near died‖ from the cholera shot he received. About 3,027 men boarded the USS Lurline, a plush cruise ship, around October of 1943, eventually docking in Australia and finally in Bombay, India. Feia says that the entire trip lasted thirty days, they had no idea of their destination, and that it was hot when they got close to Bombay. -
