”Every Rose Has Its Thorn” Poison R E P O T By Karianne Haraldseide The Assignment ”A musician / group / orchestra have contacted you and want a visual re- presentation of one of their songs. You are free to choose the music. You are to produce a photo based illustration with vector elements (Illustrator) based on one of their songs. The client wishes the illustra- tion to add a new dimension to the music. There is no opportunity to use text in the poster. The illustration must be in the format 210 x 300 mm, with a resolution of 300ppi and 3 mm bleed.” I N T R O D U C Poison Poison was formed in 1984 in Pennsylvania. The band originally started in 1983, with the name Paris, but changed it in 1984 to Poison. The hard-rock band had huge sucess in the 1980s and 1990s. There is no doubt that there were a lot of glam going on at that time. They were what we call a ”Glam Rock-Band”. ”Every Rose Has Its Thorn” I chose the song ”Every Rose Has Its Thorn” by the band Poison. The lyrics is inspired by a true event wich happened to the lead singer Bret Michaels, in 1988. Bret Michaels was on tour with his band, when he began to long for his girlfriend at home. He decided to call her, but the conversation ended quickly when he heard another man´s voice in the background. The very next day, the song ”Every Rose Has Its Thorn” where written, inspired by that phone call. L y r i c s We both lie silently still Every rose has its thorn In the dead of the night Just like every night has it’s dawn Although we both lie close together Just like every cowboy sings his sad, sad song We feel miles apart inside Every rose has its thorn Was it something I said or something I did Did my words not come out right Though it’s been a while now Though I tried not to hurt you I can still feel so much pain Though I tried Like the knife that cuts you the wound heals But I guess that’s why they say But the scar, that scar remains I know I could have saved our love that night Every rose has its thorn If I’d known what to say Just like every night has it’s dawn Instead if making love Just like every cowboy sings his sad, sad song We both made our separate ways Every rose has its thorn Now he found somebody new And that I never meant that much to you Yeah it does To hear that tears me up inside I listen to your favorite song And to see you cuts me like a knife Playing on the radio Hear the DJ say love’s a game of easy come and easy go I guess every rose has its thorn But I wonder does he know Just like every night has it’s dawn Has it ever felt like this Just like every cowboy sings his sad, sad song And I know that you’d be here right now Every rose has its thorn If I could have let you know somehow I guess https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pjKl0z7ZnX4 Inspiration & Interpretation The life on tour has been told to be crazy, with drinking, women and drugs. There are many stories about their life, like the one who ended up in song about a heartbreak. There have been rumors and accusations that the singer, Bret Mic- haels has been unfaithful up to several times to the woman he claimed cheating on him. Illustration ”Why would he then be that heartbroken by the cheating?” I decided to take a photo of a woman with a rose in her hand, fading away. That would present the contents of the text well. Both the wo- ”Is it allowed on tour?” man fading away and the red rose are important elements in the text. The lyrics of the song is heartbreaking, the person He had her, but now she is slipping away. in the song is clearly heartbroken and struggles to get through it. The black and white color on the background, makes the colored rose clearly visible, which I meant was important with this illustration. Inspiration Methods Creative Methods For inspiration I have searched the internet I started out with a huge brain storming. How could I get for photos, stories about the members life the main point as clear as possible out in an illustration and read the lyrics several times. ”Every with no text? The other element I meant was important was the woman I have looked at several of their previous who cheated on Bret Michaels. The text reveals that it is albums. W O R K P C E S M O O D B O A R D Illustrator during the process Pictures I started out with a photo of a woman holding a rose. To make the photo an illustration and not a photograph, I decided to make a polygonal illustrati- on. To make a polygonal illustration you have to use the pen tool and create triangles all over the photo. I wanted to get as much details as I could get from the photo, so I created very small triangles around the eyes, nose, mouth and ears. The next step was to fill all the triangles with colours. The layers ”BLACK” and I carefully chose colors using the eyedropper tool. ”WHITE” were used in order to get more details from the I decided not to use the polygonal effect on the rose, photo when i traced it. I wanted it to be like the origonal photo. This in order to make the rose stand out in the final result. The last thing I did in illustrator was to make the background white. While working in illustrator I really saw the advantage of using ”layers”. Photoshop during the process Pictures Most of the work were already done in illustrator. Altough there were a few steps I had to do in photoshop. The first thing I did was to mark the whole photo, except the rose, with the magic wand tool. The next step was to make the photo black and white. Because I did not mark the rose with the magic wand tool, the rose was still colored. After getting the picture black and white, I went in and changed the con- trast and brightness of the photo. I wanted the effect of that the woman was fading away. I increased the percentage of brightness considerably and reduced the contrast. The rose also faded away in the step above, so I had to mark the rose with the magic wand and increase the contrast, and at the same time lower the brightness. Sketches and Training Style/Genre Colors I have chosen ”Hopelessness”. First I made a colored illustration. I instantly thought that the You crave for a person so bad, but effect of fading away, which i meant the person hurt you, and you know was a really important effect, did not you can never be with that person come through that much that I had ever again. hoped. With alot of background, the woman D E S I G N would disappear. I also wanted the photo to be centered. The positioning of the rose was also very important. It could easily disappear. PERFORMED IDENTITIES: HEAVY METAL MUSICIANS BETWEEN 1984 AND 1991 Bradley C. Klypchak A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2007 Committee: Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Dr. John Makay Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Ron E. Shields Dr. Don McQuarie © 2007 Bradley C. Klypchak All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

  • Cirque Dreams: Illumination by Neil Goldberg, Jill Winters & David Scott
Young Critics Reviews Fall 2010-2011 Cirque Dreams: Illumination By Neil Goldberg, Jill Winters & David Scott At the Hippodrome Theatre through October 17 By Aaron Bell ILLUMINATION SHOWS ITS BRILLIANCE The house lights go down in the historic Hippodrome Theatre. We’re brought into a fast-paced newscast program when we hear the superbly resonant voice of Onyie Nwachukwu, who plays the Reporter. She tells us that another regular day has just begun, and that the daily occurrences in the “Cirque Dreams: Illumination” world will soon be lighting up the stage. Although a tad disturbed by her slightly nasal, high-belting, soulful vocals, one comes to appreciate Nwachukwu’s stylized singing; it completely fits her fun-loving, scoop-seeking reporter essence. One can’t help but appreciate her wonderful articulation and vocal clarity when she serenades us with a fabulously written opening number. This song, “Change,” gives us the main idea of the entire show, “If you don’t like it, change your mind. ” One’s mind is indeed changed by this sparkly production. The many feats of physical excellence and theatrical genius suggest how everyday life would look with an incredibly heightened sense of imagination. Santiago Rojo’s costume design and Betsy Herst’s production design bring that concept to life with their explosively colorful and symbolic wardrobes and sets. One sees cast members dressed as animated street cones, traffic lights and construction items. The set uses neon effects to brighten up the town atmosphere. The characters’ relationships with each other and their environment are interesting elements as well.
