O R G 2 O R G A N I Z A T I O N O V E R V I E W WHAT IS COLLEGE TO CONGRESS? College to Congress is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that creates pathways for students to intern in Congress who otherwise could not afford to do so. Our comprehensive program aims to disrupt the traditional pipeline of congressional staff by selecting diverse students and placing them in positions of influence on Capitol Hill. WHAT DO WE DO? Through a $10,000 scholarship, C2C provides students with a Congressional internship, pays all expenses including travel, housing, meals and wardrobe, offers leadership training and professional development, and matches recipients with career mentors throughout their journey. WHY IS IT IMPORTANT? According to an independent report, over 90% of U.S. Members of Congress do not pay their interns. Because of the financial barrier to entry, many young change makers from low-income families are not represented in the law-making process. HOW DO WE ACHIEVE OUR GOALS? C2C is incredibly appreciative of the bi-partisan, coast-to-coast Member of Congress offices that comprise the 2018 Congressional Host Committee. These offices work with C2C during the selection process to choose leaders nationwide, place students in internships, and mentor leaders while they are on Capitol Hill. 3 WHAT DOES COLLEGE TO CONGRESS PROVIDE? We know that interning in DC can really add up. C2C takes into account expenses like food, professional work attire, housing, and transportation. In total, including staff engagement with students, we invest more than $26,000 into each one of our interns! = Funds for a professional wardrobe = Airfare to and from DC & daily metro benefits = Daily meal stipend = Housing on Capitol Hill = Mentor of the opposite party PLUS, OUR TEAM WORKS CLOSELY WITH STUDENTS DURING THEIR INTERNSHIP AND BEYOND = Coaching and career planning = Professional development courses = Financial literacy & budget trainings = Alumni job search support 4 C O N G R E S S I O N A L C H A M P I O N S Members of Congress are part of the solution to a complex problem. Audrey began her career as an unpaid intern in the House of Representatives during the Summer of 2012. This internship launched her career in public service and took her from working in Congress to campaigning on some of the most competitive political races of the 2014 and 2016 election cycles. During her time on the Hill, Audrey struggled to support R herself, working multiple part-time jobs and taking out student loans. At 26-years-old, Audrey founded College to Congress to ensure other E students would not have to endure the financial hardships she faced while breaking into the political arena. D Her idea was simple, create a pathway for students from low-income N families to intern on the Hill, free from the financial challenges that limit them. She introduced the idea to Congress and worked tirelessly U across the aisle to win support. • Dear Colleague
November 13, 2018 Dear Colleague: We write today to share our support for Steny Hoyer to serve as Majority Leader in the 116th Congress. In the majority, we will have considerable opportunity to effect change and great responsibility to get things done on behalf of our constituents. We will need a steady, experienced leader over the next two years, who also works to empower our Members and prepare them for future leadership opportunities. We will need someone who will hold President Trump, his Administration, and Congressional Republicans accountable – while still being able to work effectively in a divided government to get legislation passed. It is for these reasons that we believe that Steny is the person we need as Majority Leader. Steny was out on the trail tirelessly campaigning this cycle, doing the hard work necessary to take back the House. He traveled to districts in every part of the country, campaigning with progressive and moderate Democratic candidates alike. He’s been there for us: traveling for us, raising money for us, and he’s often one of the first people to reach out and offer his support. He has been a mentor to many of us. We believe it is critical for our leaders to promote Members across our Caucus and give them real opportunities to lead. Steny has done this, and will continue to do so. Half of his Whip team is composed of Members who have served for three terms or less. He was a strong supporter of efforts in 2016 to expand the leadership team, and he is committed to making changes that empower Members further, including by strengthening the Committee process.

  • Immigration Reform in the House – Republican Targets July 3, 2013
Immigration Reform in the House – Republican Targets July 3, 2013 If there is a vote on comprehensive immigration reform with a path to citizenship in the House, it will pass with a bipartisan majority. If all but a handful of the House Democrats vote yes, and at least 20 Republicans from the list below come along, reform can easily clear the 218 necessary to pass the lower chamber. Looking at the list of 99 House Republicans below, it’s clear that capturing those 20 or so Republican votes is well within reach. Our target list includes several different groups of Republicans, such as: Republicans with growing numbers of Latino and Asian constituents. While redistricting has temporarily insulated many House Republicans from the “demographic cliff” their party faces if it caters only to white voters," at least 38 Republican members of Congress represent heavily Latino districts--and approximately 25 GOP members are in diverse swing districts where the growing Latino, Asian, and immigrant vote is crucial. These include California Republicans Jeff Denham, David Valadao, Gary Miller, Buck McKeon and Devin Nunes; Colorado Republican Mike Coffman; Florida Republicans Mario Diaz-Balart and Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (both of whom are longtime supporters of immigration reform); New York Republicans Peter King and Michael Grimm; and Nevada Republican Joe Heck. Republicans with agricultural or high-tech interests in their districts. Both the agriculture and high-tech sectors urgently need immigration reform to secure a 21st century workforce. Republicans who should support reform for the economic well-being of their districts include Judiciary Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-VA), Spencer Bachus (R-AL),and Sam Johnson (R-TX), all of whom represent agriculture-heavy districts, and Darrell Issa (R-CA), whose district includes tech interests.
