P19 Layout 1 TUESDAY, AUGUST 4, 2015 SPORTS 20-time English champions United begin new campaign MANCHESTER: For a club of Manchester United’s standing, two years out of the Premier League title conversation is two too many. There are reasons to be optimistic that the run won’t stretch to a third season, even though the 20-time English champions head into the new campaign with as many questions as answers. Louis van Gaal is starting his second season in charge and feels his philosophy - his buzzword since arriving at Old Trafford - is beginning to permeate the club. The Dutchman also believes his squad is better balanced after the offseason signings of midfielders Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin, Italy right back Matteo Darmian, Netherlands forward Memphis Depay and Argentina goalkeeper Sergio Romero. Throw in its return to the Champions League and another strong set of preseason results on the tour of the United States, including a victory against European champion Barcelona, and there’s every reason to feel United should improve on seventh- and fourth-place finishes in the league in the last two seasons. Not every- thing is rosy at Old Trafford, though. United looks short up front following the departure of Robin van Persie and Radamel Falcao this summer. Wayne Rooney starts the season as the club’s only senior striker, although Javier Hernandez - currently injured - is back from his loan spell at Real Madrid. There remain question marks over the future of goalkeeper David de Gea, arguably United’s best player last season and the main reason the team is back in the Champions League. De Gea is heavily linked with a move to Madrid and has barely featured in preseason. In November 2011, there were 6,082 licensed agents worldwide: 41% of them were domiciled within countries hosting the big five European leagues: England, Spain, Germany, Italy and France. This research project firstly investigates shares in the representation market of players in the five major European championships. By presenting the results of a survey questionnaire, it analyses the socio-demographic profile of licensed football agents in the above mentioned countries, the business structure of their activity, the different kinds of services provided, and the way in which they are performed from a relational point of view (network approach). The analysis of shares highlights that the big five league players’ representation market is highly concentrated: half of the footballers are managed by 83 football agents or agencies. Our study reveals the existence of closed relational networks that clearly favors the concentration of players under the control of few agents. Footballers are not equally distributed between intermediaries. Conversely, dominant actors exist alongside dominated agents. One fifth of the agents having answered to our questionnaire manage the career of half of the players represented on the whole.

Transfer fees for soccer players are at an all-time high. To make the most of their budget, soccer clubs need to understand the type of players they have and the type of players that are on the market. Current insights in the playing style of players are mostly based on the opinions of human soccer experts such as trainers and scouts. Unfortu- nately, their opinions are inherently subjective and thus prone to faults. In this paper, we characterize the playing style of a player in a more rigor- ous, objective and data-driven manner. We characterize the playing style of a player using a so-called `player vector' that can be interpreted both by human experts and machine learning systems. We demonstrate the validity of our approach by retrieving player identities from anonymized event stream data and present a number of use cases related to scouting and monitoring player development in top European competitions. 1 Introduction Data analysis is becoming increasingly important in many professional sports [19]. Sports clubs are analyzing huge amounts of data in order to gain a competitive advantage over their opposition. Soccer has been a relative late comer to this trend. The classic statistics about a soccer match (e.g., that appear in boxscores or are often reported on television) tend to be raw counts or fractions, such as the ball possession percentage, number of shots on target or pass success percentage.
