This year Thas been a very special time in the life of Bezalel - our Centenary. I feel this is a perfect opportunity for us to share with our friends throughout the world some of the events of this unique year, and hence I am proud to present you with our first Bezalel Bulletin. I hope that this new publication will provide you with an insight to the Bezalel Academy’s recent activities and will serve as a direct form of communication between us and our much valued Friends. I would like to share two developments with you that will be affecting our future. The first is the inauguration of the historic site of Bezalel in the centre of Jerusalem which will be the home of our Department of Architecture. The inauguration ceremony will take place on October 18th 2006, and of course you are all invited to partake in the festivities. The restoration and rebuilding of the historic site could not have been achieved without the kind help of our friends from abroad - our long standing friend and supporter, “Yakir Bezalel” – Honorary Fellow of Bezalel 2006, Dr. Marcella Brenner, from Washington DC, Ari and Sabby Mionis of Greece, Milla, David , Susan and Rebecca Gradel from the UK, the Abramson Family from New York, and the Libby Mohel Estate, Lakewood, New Jersey. The second development is our plan to return the entire Bezalel Academy from Mount Scopus to the center of Jerusalem. On 1st September we announced an international competition for architects to plan the future Bezalel campus on its new site - the Russian Compound in the very heart of Jerusalem (www. bezalel-competition.org.il). In the midst of our 100 year anniversary this is a very ambitious and demanding project. Our decision to relocate to the centre of Jerusalem is based on three main issues. Firstly, we believe that an Academy of Arts and Design should be connected to the pulse of an urban immediate environment providing interaction between the students and faculty with the public. Secondly, our current building is very user unfriendly, and has reached maximum capacity not enabling us to undergo any further growth or development. Thirdly, we believe that Bezalel in the city will be a major contribution to the strength and revival of the center of Jerusalem. The financial scope of the project is $60 million which we hope to raise through selling our building on Mount Scopus, some government assistance, and donations from our Friends around the world. As we embark upon this exciting journey, looking forward to our next 100 years of creativity in art, design and architecture, may I thank you for your interest and support, and wish you all a Happy, Healthy, Prosperous and Peaceful New Year – Shana Tova. Over seventy paintings, sculptures, and historical documents - including works that had never been exhibited publicly, such as a handwritten draft of the Balfour Declaration - traced Schatz’s achievements from the beginning of his career in Europe through his role in shaping the first chapter of modern Israeli art history. “Boris Schatz was a visionary whose goal was to establish, in Jerusalem, a cultural center for the birth of a new Hebraic art...
