8 inside asian gaming June 2017 Macau tax rate not a Sands China priority Sands China President and Chief Operating Officer Dr Wilfred Wong says Macau’s operators have a “social obligation” to contribute to the city’s revenue stream. His comments followed a keynote address by Galaxy Entertainment Group Vice Chairman Mr Francis Lui in which he highlighted the current 39% tax rate as an issue for operators trying to remain competitive in the face of growing regional competition from a number of jurisdictions offering considerably lower taxation. But Dr Wong said it is important for operators to recognize the privileged position they are in. “As an operator, the tax rate obviously impacts on our bottom line and Macau is not known for a low tax regime in this respect, but we must remember that we are concessions,” he said during a G2E Asia conference panel. “We are given a concession as operators unlike in Las Vegas where you can apply (for a license) and there is really no limit on the number of operators. “We’re privileged to have a concession here. We know we have social obligations because Macau still relies very heavily on the gaming industry and it is still a very significant source of revenue for the government, so it’s up to the government to really look at this … obviously we would not advocate for any increase in gaming tax.”

We’ve always been a very agile company. We’ve been able to MC: Talking about simplifying, the next logical step maneuver and change our strategies when we have needed to. So would seem to be merging Melco Resorts and Melco when the market changes, if we’ve been underperforming in DIP International. If we do buy them out at a higher valuation somewhere down the road, so be it.

MC: But wouldn’t you rather send a player to City of Dreams because that’s 100% yours, versus Studio City which is only 60% yours? LH: Macau is so competitive. That would have been an ideal scenario in that we can dictate where our players go. But Macau has so many great resorts and so many competitors competing for the same players, that has never worked out. We just let our players pick. What we’re really trying to do is bundle the experience so that players can enjoy both City of Dreams and Studio City. Ultimately, our customers and players have their own preferences.
