  • Scarlett Johansson, an ‘Ideal’ Embodiment of the Posthuman Female in Science Fiction and Media?
Superstar to Superhuman: Scarlett Johansson, an ‘Ideal’ Embodiment of the Posthuman Female in Science Fiction and Media? Abby Lauren Kidd University of East Anglia, UK | [email protected] ABSTRACT From 2013 to 2017, Hollywood actor Scarlett Johansson was the star vehicle in four unrelated science fiction films that saw her portray a posthuman female enabled by artificially intelligent technology. As such technologies become ever more ubiquitous in the world, so too are the burgeoning discourses around posthumanism and artificial intelligence, which are predominantly disseminated to non-specialists through science fiction and journalistic media. These discourses hold the power to influence our perceptions of incoming technological advancements. Therefore, it is important to gain an interdisciplinary understanding of these discourses and their intersections in order to contribute to the cultivation of a general population that is technologically literate and empowered, as well as foster productive dialogues between specialists from within and across the sciences and humanities fields. The media’s configuration of Scarlett Johansson as an ‘exceptional’ woman, often by drawing upon the lexicon of science fiction, has initiated underlying connections between the actor and posthuman figures within the genre, contributing to her perceived suitability for such roles. Despite appearing to be the ‘ideal’ candidate for posthuman female roles, Johansson’s repeated casting poses several problematic implications, particularly when taken into consideration through a feminist lens. Not only does it contribute to an agenda that establishes improbable conceptions of how artificial, posthuman entities should look and behave, but it also perpetuates retrograde notions of gender roles. KEYWORDS artificial intelligence, posthumanism, science fiction and communication, gender representation, celebrity studies CITATION Kidd, A.

But if Asian American media history has taught us anything, it’s that crossing overT should always give us pause. The Oliver Stone–produced The Joy Luck Club’s (Wayne Wang, 1993) cross-generational story of four Chinese American families earned critical acclaim, being placed on Roger Ebert and Gene Siskel’s list of top ten films of 1993. All-American Girl (ABC, 1994–1995) debuted in 1994 as the first prime-time sitcom with an all Asian American cast and marked Margaret Cho’s entrée into the living rooms of mainstream America. Better Luck Tomorrow ( Justin Lin, 2002) rocked the 2002 Sundance Film Festival, legendary for its conflict-ridden question-and-answer session that spurred Ebert to come to defend the movie against hostile audience members, and became the first movie acquired by MTV Films. Despite this collective excitement, these well-heralded instances of rare prime-time and commercial exposure have all proved less pivotal than audiences, commentators, and studios once imagined, relegated to discussions of missed opportunities or representational politics in the Asian American community. Snow White and the Huntsman "I'm deeply sorry for the hurt and embarrassment I've caused to those close to me and everyone this has affected. This momentary indiscretion has jeopardized the most important thing in my life, the person I love and respect the most, Rob. I love him, I love him, I'm so sorry." Joségarcia ,mx and Attilia Fattori Franchini are proud to present “Snow White and the Huntsman”, an exhibition of new works by artist Yves Scherer. The show takes its title from the 2012 motion picture starring Kristen Stewart as Snow White and Chris Hemsworth as the Huntsman; a movie which was met with little interest at the box office, but has made headlines for what happened behind the scenes. Various images depicting an affair between the actress and Rupert Sanders, director of the movie, appeared in major news media and got inflated into a scandal which destroyed the public loverelationship between Kristen Stewart and her Twilight CoStar Robert Pattinson. This act of betrayal put million of fans to tears and launched a debate turned rant on the rightfulness of the action performed by the actress, making it’s way into the moral codex and subconscious of a generation. Scherer takes this context as a starting point, inserting his own narrative into it. By taking the position of a lover whose affection isn’t returned but betrayed by the very act, he develops the story of an intimate stranger, a position oscillating between the selfabsorbed intensity and onanistic privacy of the man we brush past in our passages through late night airports and bus stations, and the artist’s personal history.
