Madgett was the recipient of many honors including 1993's American Book Award and the George Kent Award in 1995. Madgett was interviewed by The HistoryMakers® on June 27, 2007 and March 5, 2007, in Detriot, Michigan and Detroit, Michigan. Biographical Note by The HistoryMakers® Poet and English professor emeritus Naomi Cornelia Long Madgett was born on July 5, 1923 in Norfolk, Virginia to the Reverend Clarence Marcellus Long and the former Maude Selena Hilton. Growing up in East Orange, New Jersey, she attended Ashland Grammar School and Bordentown School. At age twelve, Madgett’s poem, My Choice, was published on the youth page of the Orange Daily Courier. In 1937, the family moved to St. Louis, Missouri where her schoolmates included Margaret Bush Wilson, E. Sims Campbell and lifelong friend, baritone Robert McFerrin, Sr. Madgett, at age fifteen, established a friendship with Langston Hughes. Just days after graduating with honors from Charles Sumner High School in 1941, Madgett’s first book of poetry, Songs to a Phantom Nightingale was published. -

A NARRATIVE OF AUGUSTA BAKER’S EARLY LIFE AND HER WORK AS A CHILDREN’S LIBRARIAN WITHIN THE NEW YORK PUBLIC LIBRARY SYSTEM BY REGINA SIERRA CARTER DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Educational Policy Studies in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2016 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Professor James Anderson, Chair Professor Anne Dyson Professor Violet Harris Associate Professor Yoon Pak ABSTRACT Augusta Braxston Baker (1911-1998) was a Black American librarian whose tenure within the New York Public Library (NYPL) system lasted for more than thirty years. This study seeks to shed light upon Baker’s educational trajectory, her career as a children’s librarian at NYPL’s 135th Street Branch, her work with Black children’s literature, and her enduring legacy. Baker’s narrative is constructed through the use of primary source materials, secondary source materials, and oral history interviews. The research questions which guide this study include: 1) How did Baker use what Yosso described as “community cultural wealth” throughout her educational trajectory and time within the NYPL system? 2) Why was Baker’s bibliography on Black children’s books significant? and 3) What is her lasting legacy? KEYNOTE ADDRESS DISCOVERING OUR CONNECTIONS: RACE, GENDER, AND THE LAW MARGARET WALKER ALEXANDER* The great American poet, Walt Whitman wrote: I feel I am of them- I belong to those convicts and prostitutes myself- And henceforth I will not deny ther- For how can I deny myself? In these United States of America justice is tempered by money and power. Ever since the Constitution was framed more than two hundred years ago the power structure of America has been com- posed largely of white Anglo-Saxon Protestant males-no Catholics, Jews, nor Negroes need apply. These excluded groups along with all women were considered the minorities. When the society is fas- cist, sexist, and racist, the judicial system can be neither better nor worse. But the law is of a dual nature. It is both an oppressor and a liberator. When segregation was the law of the land established in 1896 by the Supreme Court in the Plessy-Ferguson case, the law was an oppressor. Even before the Civil War under the Black Codes or penal system Black males were counted three-fifths of human beings and women * Margaret Walker Alexander was born in Birmingham, Alabama. Mrs. Alexander wrote her poem ForMy People when she was twenty-two. Since that time it has been a constant inspiration to the African-American community. Yale University Press published her first book of poetry in 1942. Houghton Mifflin published the historical novelJubilee in 1966. Mrs. Alexander earned master's and doctoral degrees in English from the University of Iowa for these works. After approximately forty years of teaching, Mrs. -

1 It started with a simple question: given the 2021 Stock Show’s postponement, what could we do to make us all just a little bit less lonely during those 16 days in January when we’d normally be together? What emerged exceeded our wildest expectations. Celebrating the Spirit of the National Western Stock Show blossomed into a 16-day virtual event featuring 17 videos, a dozen Virtual Happy Hours, and a Marquee Concert. We ended up with a trove of musical performances, interviews, shout-outs, tours, and much more to share with the National Western family. This was a remarkable event, and, as you’ll see in the following pages, the media took note. With this virtual homage to the Stock Show now in the rearview mirror, we’re looking ahead to 2022. Next year’s Stock Show is going to be bigger and better than ever. What’s more, we’ll be celebrating the grand opening of the first of the National Western Center’s four major new facilities: the Cille and Ron Williams Yards and its centerpiece, the HW Hutchison and Family Stockyards Event Center. Celebrating the Spirit did more than bring us together. It sustained the momentum of a capital campaign that’s raised close to $80 million of our $100 million goal. It showed the enormous sway the National Western has on our collective imaginations. And it underscored the importance of the work we’re doing to build this storied institution a new home for the century to come. Thank you for all you’re doing to ensure the future of the National Western. -
