Having grown up in the Riverina on a broad acre farm and attending Yanco Agricultural High School my passion and involvement in the rural industry is ongoing. Going to the show was a highlight for me growing up. It was one of the major events for us as a family and the community. It was a natural fit for me to become involved in the show and I am very humbled to hold the position of what is such a wonderful organisation here in the Shoalhaven. The show continues to highlight country life to the entire community and connects those that work on the land with those who work in town. Given the stress placed on our rural community with the continuing drought the show will provide us all with a pleasant distraction away from the dry times. This will be an opportunity to take some time off, meet with friends, enjoy a vast array of attractions and exhibits that are accessible to the entire community. Plane Simple – The Shoalhaven Paper Plane Challenge was launched this last year on 5 December 2020 at the brand new Shoalhaven Indoor Sporting Complex. The inaugural event challenged high school students from across the Shoalhaven to work in teams to design and fly paper planes. On the day we saw great teamwork, problem solv-ing and creativity from our teams who worked together, encouraged each other and launched their creations in a closely contested and fun competition. The Pavilion is the centrepiece of the showground and each year it showcases the efforts of many aspiring and talented community members in over 28 sections. These include cooking, needlecraft, porcelain china, woodcraft, art, floral work, vegetables, fruit, plus all junior sections. A major highlight of the Pavilion is the “CELEBRATING THE SHOALHAVEN” ANNUAL ART PRIZE. This has 3 sections, junior, teens and adult. This is an acquisitive competition and all the winning art pieces will be displayed in a celebratory exhibition to be held in 2026 as part of the 150th Nowra Show celebrations. Whilst visiting the Pavilion you have the opportunity to purchase a ticket in our fabulous raffle and also attempt to guess the weight of Johnny the horse and the Ringmaster in our 2020 Guessing Competition.

The Nowra Show Society is pleased to announce Annalise McDonald as the 2020 Nowra Showgirl and Chipo Machingura Congratulations to all 2020 Nowra as the Runner-Up. Showgirl entrants Judging for the 2020 Competition occurred on 23rd November 2020 and culminated in the Nowra Showgirl Presentation Dinner which was held this year at the Nowra Golf Club. This event was attended by over 80 members of the local community and acknowledged the achievements of all five Annalise McDonald Showgirl entrants as well as highlighting the importance of the Sponsored by agricultural show movement. Reg Cochrane Pastoral Although final judging for the competition has been completed, the Showgirl entrants will not be absent from the 2020 Nowra Show. The role of Showgirl means being involved in all aspects of your local Show, as entrants are afforded a behind-the- scenes experience which connects them directly with both exhibitors and patrons. Showgirls will be busy across the two days of the Show presenting prizes, sashing livestock, speaking with media and attending official Show functions as Chipo Machingura ambassadors for the Nowra Show Society. Sponsored by The 2020 Showgirl entrants can be seen each evening of the Integrity Real Estate Show in the centre ring, with a formal presentation scheduled for Saturday evening, 8th February. Annalise will then represent the Nowra Show Society at the Zone 2 Final, hosted by the Hawkesbury Show Society on 22nd February. We wish Annalise the best of luck for this day! The Showgirl Competition is not a beauty pageant but aims to find a young female ambassador for rural NSW. Over 500 young women enter the Competition annually throughout NSW and are judged on their interest and knowledge about Imogen Clarke rural Australia, as well as confidence, ambition and life goals, Sponsored by general knowledge, presentation and speech. Candidates are Ablock Builders also asked about their involvement in the local community and national political issues that impact Australians, particularly those in rural and regional areas. The young woman chosen as The Land Sydney Royal Showgirl will act as an ambassador for rural and regional NSW. In 2019 Vincentia Public School received the Junior Award and the Senior Award was presented to Bomaderry High School. The Annual President’s Award will again be presented to both a primary and a high school this year. All students who enter any competition will receive a point toward the award, plus this year all students who participate in any section of the show with regard to stewarding, judging etc. will be included in the point score. There is a perpetual shield held by the Show Society with a smaller trophy plus a cash prize of $100 given to each successful school. Local members of the Miniature Goat Breeders Association of Australia will be showcasing different breeds of miniature goats including Australian Miniature goats, Pygmy goats and Nigerian Dwarf goats. Breeders will be on hand to answer questions about the breeds and provide information about keeping goats. On the Saturday breeders will show their best animals.

Many would not know that the lady on the $20 note has a relationship with the Nowra Show movement. Mary Reiby pictured on the note was a wealthy merchant and landowner with a land grant on the Shoalhaven River at Burrier. Mary was a convict and was sent to Australia for stealing horses, but she met and married the entrepreneur Thomas Reiby and eventually inherited his wealth when he died. Mary’s grandson was James Thomson. James was born in Tasmania and following his time in the Bank of Australia moved to Sydney then to Burrier onto the family property. Here he made the first step into politics and being young and enthusiastic he candidate for the representation of the first parliament of NSW and was elected to represent the area. Because of the long and hazardous journeys to Sydney and unpaid service he only served for the first year and did not seek re-election. He was a member of the Show Committee for many years and was once the Treasurer. Past President James Thomson In 1860 James married Miss Mary Mackenzie, daughter of well-known colonist Dr Kenneth Mackenzie of the Bundanon Farm on the Shoalhaven River and they settled permanently on the Burrier Estate. He was a magistrate of the colony for 51 years and worked for the Crown unpaid, his only reward was sound judgement and a good conscience. Thus, the marriage of these two pioneering families had a huge influence in the early days of the Shoalhaven and Agricultural and Horticultural Show as it was known then. Hugh Mackenzie was James Thomson’s brother in law and Hugh had inherited the family’s Estate from his late father DR Kenneth Mackenzie. Hugh was the longest serving President of the Society and Mayor of South Shoalhaven, a position he held for successive terms and never lost an opportunity of furthering and protecting the interests of the town. It was in an honorary capacity and refused to accept any mayoral remuneration. Hugh contributed largely towards the cost of improvements in the show grounds here and towards other expenses that had for their object the success of the shows.
