At the traffic lights opposite Haggs Castle Golf Course turn left into Dumbreck Road. Continue to the junction and turn left into St Andrews Drive. Pass Craigholme School and beyond the traffic lights turn right into Aytoun Road. Number 16 is on the left hand side. Situation Sunningdale is situated on a fine plot within the West Pollokshields conservation area. The villa is surrounded by numerous imposing detached and semi-detached sandstone villas within the heart of the garden suburb of Pollokshields. By 1849 Sir John Maxwell, 8th Baronet of Nether Pollok, had realised the potential of this green and fertile area on the outskirts of the city of Glasgow and his successors supervised its transformation into the first planned garden suburb in Great Britain. With wide roads and controlled streetscapes, the layouts of the villas were carefully monitored and the western area was exclusively developed for villas. Effectively, Pollokshields was Britain’s first garden suburb, considerably predating the Garden City movement and the celebrated examples of Letchworth (1903) and Welwyn Garden City (1919). The architectural styles in West Pollokshields range from Classical to Italianate, Glasgow style to Gothic and from Scots Baronial to Old English. Many of the prominent architects of the late Victorian period are represented, Alexander “Greek” Thomson, H E Clifford, W F McGibbon, H & D Barclay, James Miller and Rowand Anderson amongst them. Many façades conceal interiors richly adorned by the finest craftsmen, some of international renown. Aytoun Road is conveniently positioned for access to Glasgow’s finest park, Pollok Country Park. Pollok Park is internationally famous and includes the renowned Burrell Collection, Pollok House, rhododendron walks, numerous sporting facilities and Haggs Castle Golf Course. West Pollokshields provides highly reputable primary and secondary schooling with private schooling available locally at Craigholme School for Girls and Hutchesons’ Grammar School. Additional pick up points are available for Glasgow Academy, Kelvinside Academy, High School of Glasgow, Belmont Academy and St Aloysius College. Pollokshields provides additional notable attractions including Maxwell Park with its lovingly tended wildlife pond, Bellahouston Park, which includes a ski centre, the House for the Art Lover built to the design of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Haggs Castle Golf Course, Clydesdale Cricket Club and Titwood Tennis Club. Maxwell Park railway station provides regular services to Glasgow Central station with a journey time of approximately 7 minutes.
