Theme of Today’s Worship: Repent, because Christ Is the King who Humbly Comes to Save Us!

Thank you for being with us to celebrate Palm Sunday. Today begins the seven days known as . On this day, Jesus rode triumphantly into . But he had come to be the Savior of the world, so that meant his journey to Jerusalem did not end at a king’s throne, but at a criminal’s .

At Jesus’ entrance into Jerusalem, the crowd waved palms as a symbol of deliverance and triumph and met him with that famous Palm Sunday cry of adoration, “!” The word “hosanna” comes from a Hebrew term meaning “Lord, save us,” and so we still join in that same cry today as we wave palms to remember how our Lord saves us: through his Word and Sacraments that share with us the of his life, death, and resurrection for us. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hail our King who has come to save us! Hosanna in the highest!

2 The Order of Service Service of the Word ~ Christian Worship, p. 38

The Invocation

M(inister): In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C(ongregation): Amen.

M: Dear friends in Christ, for five weeks of we have been preparing for the celebration of our Lord’s death and resurrection. Today we come together to begin the solemn celebration of Holy Week. Christ entered in triumph into his own city to complete his work as our Messiah: to suffer, to die, and to rise again for us. Let us remember with devotion his entry that culminated at the and follow him with living faith.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!

C: Amen!

M: Let us pray.

God our Father, we remember how Jesus entered Jerusalem and was welcomed as a king by those who shouted “Hosanna” and spread their clothing and palm branches before him. Accept our praise and listen to our prayers as we rejoice in our triumphant King, Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord.

C: Amen.

M: Let us go forth in peace, in the name of the Lord.

C: Hosanna in the highest! Christ our King, come and save us!

 The Opening Hymn: #130, Hosanna, Loud Hosanna The hymn is printed on p. 12 in the service folder. During the introduction to the hymn, the Congregation is invited to bring palms forward and place them in front of the altar.

3 The Confession of Sins

M: We have come into the presence of God, who created us to love and serve him as his dear children. But we have disobeyed him and deserve only his wrath and punishment. Therefore, let us confess our sins to him and plead for his mercy.

C: Merciful Father in heaven, I am altogether sinful from birth. In countless ways I have sinned against you and do not deserve to be called your child. But trusting in Jesus, my Savior, I pray: Have mercy on me according to your unfailing love. Cleanse me from my sin, and take away my guilt.

M: God, our heavenly Father, has forgiven all your sins. By the perfect life and innocent death of our Lord Jesus Christ, he has removed your guilt forever. You are his own dear child. May God give you strength to live according to his will.

C: Amen.

The Prayer of the Day

M: Let us pray.

We praise you, O God, for the great acts of love by which you redeemed us through your Son, Jesus Christ. As he was acclaimed by those who scattered their garments and branches of palm in his path, so may we always hail him as our King and follow him with perfect confidence; for he lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

4 The Word of God

. The First Lesson: :9-10 One day God’s true King would come to bring us righteousness, salvation, and peace.

9 Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout, Daughter Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. 10 I will take away the chariots from Ephraim and the warhorses from Jerusalem, and the battle bow will be broken. He will proclaim peace to the nations. His rule will extend from sea to sea and from the River to the ends of the earth.

The Psalm of the Day: Psalm 24, Christian Worship p. 73 Speak the verses responsively; speak the bold “Gloria Patri” and sing the refrains together.

M: The earth is the LORD’S, and everything in it,

C: the world, and all who live in it;

M: for he founded it upon the seas

C: and established it upon the waters.

M: Who may ascend the hill of the LORD?

C: Who may stand in his holy place?

M: He who has clean hands and a pure heart,

C: he will receive from God his Savior.

5

M: Lift up your heads, O you gates; be lifted up, you ancient doors,

C: that the King of glory may come in.

M: Who is this King of glory?

C: The LORD strong and mighty, the LORD mighty in battle.

M: Lift up your heads, O you gates; lift them up, you ancient doors,

C: that the King of glory may come in.

M: Who is he, this King of glory?

C: The LORD Almighty—he is the King of glory.

ALL: Glory be to the Father and to the Son ~ Gloria Patri and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

Refrain

. The Second Lesson: Philippians 2:5‐11 At Palm Sunday we see both humiliation and exaltation – Jesus humbled himself to be presented as the sacrifice for our sins; and yet for his love, his willingness, and his victory, he was exalted to the place of all honor and glory as the Savior of the world.

5 In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; 7 rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. 8 And being found in appearance as a man,

6 he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death— even death on a cross! 9 Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

The Verse of the Day: John 12:23 The Congregation will speak the verse together.

The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.

. The Lesson: :1-10 On Palm Sunday Jesus rode into Jerusalem with all the acclaim he deserved. God’s true King had finally come to save his people.

1 As they approached Jerusalem and came to and at the Mount of , Jesus sent two of his disciples, 2 saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and just as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. 3 If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ say, ‘The Lord needs it and will send it back here shortly.’ ” 4 They went and found a colt outside in the street, tied at a doorway. As they untied it, 5 some people standing there asked, “What are you doing, untying that colt?” 6 They answered as Jesus had told them to, and the people let them go. 7 When they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks over it, he sat on it. 8 Many people spread their cloaks on the road, while others spread branches they had cut in the fields. 9 Those who went ahead and those who followed shouted, “Hosanna!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” 10 “Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David!” “Hosanna in the highest heaven!”

 The Hymn of the Day: #133, Ride On, Ride On in Majesty The hymn is printed on p. 13 in the service folder.

7 . The Sermon: Zechariah 9:9-10

Ride On

The Apostles’ Creed

C: I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Thanksgiving

The Prayer of the Church

M: Lord Jesus, you are the King of heaven and earth. We join the first Palm Sunday worshipers in praising and glorifying you for coming to this earth to be our Savior. Though you are one with God the Father and Lord of all, you humbled yourself and became one with us. Thanks be to you for living a life of perfect conformity to God’s holy law in our place.

C: Praise be to you for being obedient to death, even death on a cross, to redeem us from sin.

M: Cause our voices to blend with those who sang your praises as you rode into Jerusalem. Move us to confess you before others as our Lord. Help us proclaim the message of peace and forgiveness to people of all nations. Use us to assure all people that your blood has cleansed them from sin and set them free from slavery to sin, death, and the devil.

8 C: Move us to dedicate all we are and have to your glory.

M: Lord Jesus, you are King over all the earth. Bless the nations of this world with wise rulers and good government. Let peace prevail. Grant success to the businesses and industries of our land to serve for the common good. Cause all employers to be honest and fair-minded and all employees to be diligent and faithful. Look with favor on our nation’s schools. Be with those who teach and those who learn.

C: Comfort the sick and the afflicted with the assurance of your care and protection. Strengthen the faith of the dying.

M: Hear us, Lord, as we bring you our private petitions.

Silent prayer.

M: Dear Savior, as we walk with you this Holy Week toward Calvary, keep us focused on your purpose for coming into this world and on our calling to spread this wonderful message of salvation.

C: Hear us for your mercy’s sake. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer

C: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.

 Hymn: #131, v. 1, 4-5, All Glory, Laud, and Honor The hymn is printed on p. 14 in the service folder.

9 The Closing Prayer

M: Let us pray.

O Lord God, our heavenly Father, pour out the Holy Spirit on your faithful people. Keep us strong in your grace and truth, protect and comfort us in all temptation, and bestow on us your saving peace, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

The Lord’s Blessing

M: Brothers and sisters, go in peace. Live in harmony with one another. Serve the Lord with gladness.

C: Amen.

Who knows what the COVID situation will be in these coming times? With the possibility of our state mask mandate being overturned and new COVID variants coming into our area, we may have to make some delicate decisions on how to continue functioning in a safe, wise, good way, and each person and family may come to different legitimate conclusions about what they will be involved in or not. In any case, as we move forward together in these uncertain times, let’s do as our Lord wants: let’s love and respect each other. Let’s assume the best of each other. Let’s be gracious and patient with one another. And most of all, let’s prioritize growing in the Gospel of Jesus Christ and not let our personal rights or political opinions get in the way. Whether in-person or online, public or private, “Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching” (Hebrews 10:25). God bless our Lenten journey to the cross!

Have you seen our Easter postcards that we sent out to the north side of Beaver Dam? There are plenty left if you have someone in mind to invite to celebrate Jesus’ resurrection with us – studies have shown that over half of unchurched people would consider attending an Easter service if they were personally invited by a friend or family member! Just look for the stacks on the counters in the narthex, and take as many as you like!
