COOPERATIVE REFERENCE SERVICE PROGRAMS:
A Preliminary Edition
compiled by
The Cooperative Reference Services Committee Reference Services Division American Library Association 50 E. Huron Street Chicago, Illinois 60611 1972
FILMED FROM BEST AVAILABLECOPY INTRODUCTION
This Directory of Cooperative Reference Service Programs has been compiled by the Cooperative Reference Services Committee of the Reference Services Division of the'American Library Association as an initial attempt to answer the need to provide basic information and sources of additional information about such programs. The pro- ject received the approval not only of the Board of Directors of the Reference Services Division, but also the encouragement of several Executive Secretaries of other ALA divisions.
Most of the information was collected during the year 1970/71 by contacting the state librarians or equivalent officers of the var- ious states. In some cases, the questionnaires were forwarded to ad- ministrators of programs other than those administered by the states. After collecting the data, the project was delayed because it appeared that the information might become available in other sources. However, this was not the case and a decision was made at the Midwinter, 1972, meeting to proceed with publication.
The list is arranged alphabetically by state and then by the name of the cooperative activity. In an effort to make the entries more con- sistent, some information has been rearranged or deleted. However, most of the information has been used as provided in the completed question- naire. A copy of the form letter and questionnaire is attached as an appendix.
The Chairman wishes to thank Ruth White and Andrew Hansen, Executive Secretaries of the Reference Services Division and the following members of the Cooperative Reference Services Committee who have assisted with the compilation of the directory:
Mrs. Mildred A. Barrett Mary T. Janowski Mrs. Evelyn P. Benton Philip B. Gerrard Mary Ann Duggan David McKay Mrs. Sylvia G. Faibisoff Mrs. Adelle J. McMillan Phoebe F. Hayes Arthur H. Miller F. Joan Kirwin Mrs. Rita L. Paddock
George M. Bailey has served as Chairman of the Committee and has assumed major responsibility for the directory. Any errors or additions should be sent to the Chairman, Cooperative Reference Services Committee, Reference Services Division, American Library Association, 50 E. Huron Street, Chicago, Illinois 60611.
The Committee members plan to begin the compilation of current in- formation for the publication of a more complete directory during the next year.

The Cooperative Reference Service Committee, Reference Services Division, ALA, is requesting your assistance in the preparation of its forthcoming directory of cooperative reference and information service programs. We hope to secure in- formation about both formal and informal programs, and learn whether a program is in the planning stage, ongoing, or completed. The kinds of services in Which we are interested include the following:
Reference service provided under contract or informal agreement Bibliographic centers Union catalogs and union lists Interlibrary request service Communication networks (TWX or private line teletype, special or direct telephone lines, facsimile transmission, and the like) Coordinated development of research or information collections 1n special subject fields Cooperative production of bibliographies from machine readable records Other possible projects considered to be cooperative reference service but not necessarily included under any of the above categories
The Committee published a selective bibliography of cooperative programs in the United States and Canada in the Winter 1966 issue of Rte, the RSD quarterly, and is currently updating it.
For those cooperative programs in your state for which you do not have informa- tion, we would be grateful-if you would forward a copy of this letter and ques- tionnaire to the individual or send me his name and address.
This project has received the strong endorsement, not only of the RSD Board, but of several of the other executive secretaries, including those of ASL, PLA and LAD.
The Committee members hope that you will help us by completing the enclosed ques- tionnaire and returning it to me in the enclosed, stamped, self-addressed envelope by December 31, 1970 or earlier if possible. Please use a separate copy of the questionnaire for each cooperative program.
-1231L24 - 2
A copy of the completed directory will be mailed to each state agency which provides information. Many thanks for your kind attention to this matter. Please do not hesitate to let me know if you have questions.
