August / September 2014 Adstock Clarion 1 Vine Cottage, West Street, Adstock (01296 713457) 1, Greenfields, Adstock (01296 712561) This won’t make a lot of sense to many – unless you were there!! EATING IN THE FIFTIES Pasta had not been invented. Olive oil was kept in the medicine cabinet. A takeaway was a mathematical problem. A pizza was something to do with a leaning tower. Bananas and oranges only appeared at Christmas time. All crisps were plain; the only choice was to put salt on or not. Soft drinks were called pop. Coke was something that we mixed with coal to make it last longer. A Chinese chippy was a foreign carpenter. Rice was a milk pudding, and never part of our dinner. A Big Mac was what we wore when it was raining. A microwave was something out of a science fiction movie. Oil was for lubricating your bike not for cooking, fat was for cooking. The tea cosy was the forerunner of all the energy saving devices we have today Prunes were purely medicinal. Surprisingly, muesli was readily available in those days, it was called cattle feed. We didn't eat Croissants, because we couldn't pronounce them, couldn't spell them, and we did not know what they were. Special food for dogs and cats was unheard of. Sauce was either brown or red. Water came out of a tap, if someone had suggested bottling it and charging treble for it they would have become a laughing stock. HOW TIMES HAVE CHANGED ! Wishing you all a happy holiday. As in previous years, tickets can be purchased in advance at a discount www.buckscountyshow.co.uk Thames Valley Police warning over courier scam Incidents of ‘Courier Fraud’ continue to be reported across Aylesbury Vale and Thames Valley Police would like to remind residents to be on their guard against this type of scam. The scam is as follows:- The victim receives an unsolicited telephone call from the fraudsters claiming to be their bank (or in some cases the police), stating that their systems have spotted a fraudulent payment on their card or that their card is due to expire and needs to be replaced. The person may be asked to ring back using the phone number printed on the back of their bank card. This helps to convince the person that the call is genuine. However, the fraudster has kept the telephone line open so even though the person has called the bank, the call does not go through. Instead they are unknowingly connected straight back to the fraudster. The fraudster gains the person’s trust by pretending to offer assistance. In many cases the person is asked to provide their full bank card details and key in their PIN so that the existing card can be cancelled and their new one activated or authorised. The fraudster will then explain that the bank will need to collect the card. The fraudster will then attend the person’s address or send an innocent courier company driver to collect the card and sometimes provide them with a replacement card which is subsequently found to be fake. Therefore, the fraudster has obtained the person’s name, address, full bank details, their card(s) and the PIN(s). The bank cards are then used fraudulently. Police advice is that if you receive such a call, end it immediately. Thornborough / Coombes Community Wood Bucks County Council and Thornborough Parish Council have asked us to publicise the following: Last week, two large horses were seen riding at speed up the long straight ride which runs all the way up the Adstock Road, immediately inside the road hedge, from the T junction at the Coombs. It must have been a lovely gallop, although fairly dangerous given that people and dogs can literally just nip out at any point, but various local concerns were raised. Male and female riders, who were obviously together, when challenged, said that it was fine as “the PC” had said so. Because of issues with ground conditions and other users of the site, BCC has 5 always prohibited any horse access to all of the Community Woodland. There is a general local belief that as the whole area is “public”, including Coombs farm which is tenanted and off limits, anything goes as ‘ it’s people’s right’. Whenever BCC can, it has challenged this, i.e. it’s not ok to nick hay, wood, gates, fence materials etc; nor is it ok to empty your dog at will, but the issue pervades. Notices will be put up and if any villager knows who the horse riders are / were please could you let any Parish Councillor or the Clerk know. Finally, hay making will commence in several of the grassy spaces within the woodland soon. It is the best way of getting rid of the grass whilst limiting negative impacts. Users should be aware there may be large machinery about, it’s done for all the right reasons, and BCC will be coming down hard on folks who persist in letting dogs foul onto the crop. Advance Warning - Adstock Junction Drainage In response to numerous repeated requests from the Parish Council, Bucks County Council will be carrying out improvement work at the Adstock junction in the next 8 weeks (A413 entrance to village). The works will involve digging out the pond in the centre of the junction and the ditch on the other side. The existing pipework will be jetted and repairs to the footway and kerbs as well as installation of hazard marker posts around the junction island.
