Then it’s on to lovely Cape May, NJ America’s oldest seaside resort and a treasure-trove of Victorian architecture. We’ll visit the Emlen Physick Estate and enjoy a Victorian Historic District Trolley Tour. Dinner this evening is at Harry’s Ocean Bar and Grill. Our lodgings for the night (the first of two) are at the majestic Montreal Beach Resort (each newly renovated suite features spectacular ocean views). Tuesday, May 11, 2021 After breakfast at the resort, we’ll experience Historic Cold Spring Village. Boasting some 27 buildings on 30 acres, Cold Spring is a living history village recreating the first years of American Independence. Lunch precedes a visit to Cape May Lighthouse, built in 1859. Returning to the resort, a short trolley ride from the bustling Washington Street Mall. Shop, sunbathe, swim in the Atlantic – the afternoon is free to enjoy this charming seaside gem. A second night at the Montreal Beach Resort. Wednesday, May 12, 2021 Breakfast at the hotel, then we’re off to Long Branch, NJ and the Church of the Presidents, a former Episcopal chapel on the Jersey Shore where – count ‘em – seven United States presidents worshipped, (Ulysses Grant, Rutherford Hayes, James Garfield, Chester Arthur, Benjamin Harrison, William McKinley, and Woodrow Wilson). After lunch we arrive in Princeton, NJ, famed college town and home to Drumthwacket, official residence of New Jersey Governors built in 1834.

    First Battle of Trenton Introduction The following tour is presented by the Trenton Historical Society with funding support from the New Jersey Historical Commission. Please begin this tour at the Trenton Battle Monument, located on the northern edge of downtown Trenton at the intersection of North Warren Street, North Broad Street, Pennington Avenue and Brunswick Avenue. Thank you for visiting Trenton and for your interest in the Battles of Trenton. By the middle of December 1776 it appeared that the American Revolution was all but over. General George Washington and the Continental Army had suffered a series of stunning defeats in New York at Brooklyn Heights, Harlem Heights, Throgs Neck, White Plains, and Fort Washington and had been chased across New Jersey and into Pennsylvania by the British Army. Congress questioned Washington’s ability to lead the Revolution. Washington’s troops were demoralized and ill-equipped. If the Revolution was to survive, the Americans desperately needed a victory. Washington decided to risk everything in a surprise attack on Colonel Johann Rall’s Hessian troops in the town of Trenton. Washington planned three separate but simultaneous movements across the Delaware River on Christmas night that would result in a convergent attack on Trenton before daybreak. But that night a violent winter storm pounded the Delaware Valley. Relentless snow, sleet and heavy ice thwarted all but one crossing. After battling sharp frost, high wind and heavy ice floes, only the force led by George Washington himself successfully crossed the Delaware at McConkey’s Ferry – ten miles north of Trenton and three hours behind schedule.

Thomas Edison State College, a pioneer in providing nontraditional higher education for adults, has established a campus on historic ground surrounding New Jersey’s State House. Dr. George A Pruitt Dear Reader: President, Thomas Edison State College Thomas Edison State College moved to Trenton in 1979 and established its headquarters in the Kelsey Building, built in 1911 and one of the architectural beauties of the State House Historic District. Since that time, the College has been active in conserving the historic buildings of downtown Trenton to preserve the essence of the city's legendary past and stimulate economic development. From the Kelsey Building on West State Street, our campus expanded westward as we restored the five mid-19th-century brick townhouses adjoining the Kelsey Building and leased the early-20th-century Kuser Mansion in the next block. These buildings, all listed on the National Register of Historic Places, are complemented by the modern Academic Center and Canal Banks buildings, both located a block north, on West Hanover Street. The New Jersey State Library, an affiliate of Thomas Edison State College, occupies an historic site at the middle of the State House block.
