Ohio Catholic Schools Accreditation Process Every five years, Catholic schools are required to complete an accreditation process to formulate new goals that serve as a road map for the next years. This five year process includes a self-study, an internal and external validation which reviews a plan submitted by the school, and an implementation of the plan that has been submitted. Paschal Baylon is beginning a new accreditation cycle this school year after completing our last plan written in the 2012-2013 school year.

The 2017-2018 school year is dedicated to our self-study. During this school year, students, parents, faculty, and staff will together define areas of improvement for student learning and for Catholic identity. We begin this process by surveying all stakeholders including parents. Tomorrow, Friday, October 27, you will receive an email with a link to a survey in the form of a Google Doc. You are asked to take this survey as a part of our self-study process. We want to find out your honest opinions about Saint Paschal Baylon Catholic Elementary School. Your answers will be completely confidential and be used to help formulate our goals. Please complete the survey as soon as you are able and no later than Tuesday, November 21, 2017 when we will no longer be accepting responses. Thank you!

Morning Arrival Morning arrival has been going smoothly. However, a couple of reminders will be helpful especially as we begin entering the winter season and in light of the recent tragedy at St. Francis DeSales School in Coventry Township in the drop off area.  Students arriving by car are not permitted in the building until 7:40 a.m.  Remember, if you need to drop off your child earlier, you can enroll him or her in the Before Care program.  Make sure your child is ready to leave your car before you stop. If you need to take some time with him or her, park in the parking lot and walk your child over to the school.  No child is permitted to walk across the parking lot on his/her own.  Remember when children are exiting your car, all should exit on the passenger side for safety reasons.  As you leave, please proceed to Blue Ribbon Way (exiting on Wilson Mills) only. If someone other than you is dropping off your child in the morning, please let them know that we are a one way in at Saint Paschal Lane and a one way out at Blue Ribbon Way.  Buses have the right of way. Please allow them down the driveway before your car. Often bus drivers will let cars go first, but never count on it!  Give your child enough time to walk to his/her homeroom. As the weather changes, the car rider line becomes longer and time gets later. Develop the habit of getting here with many minutes to spare!

A Huge Thank You! The weather couldn’t have been better for our 2017 Walk-a-Thon for Catholic Education! Our students enjoyed walking the neighborhood with one another, stopping at stations along the way, listening to music on their return, and finding out who were the winners of our lap walking contest. Special thanks to Gina Pilla for her unwavering efforts to make this fundraiser so successful. It has grown in leaps and bounds over the seven years of its existence thanks to her vision. Thank you to the committee members including Cindy Boes, Mary Curtis, Mary Ellen Moore, Kate Herberth, Colleen Grossner, Amy Goff, and Christine Fioritto. We were proud to wear our 2017 T-shirts with our logo designed by Greg Koeberer. Thank you to the moms and dads who came out and walked with us on Friday, October 20.

Finally, the money raised at present is over $29,000, and we thank you, our parents, for your efforts and your support. Your children really got into the spirit behind our school theme, “We Will Walk with .” In case you haven’t heard, Mrs. Miller’s class won the coveted Golden Shoe award for more laps walked/run per child than any other class in the school. Congratulations to all who made this a truly wonderful event!

From the pastor’s perspective… You have probably noticed our “motto” or tagline for our parish, but especially our school: Enriching Minds, Nourishing Souls. As I mentioned last year in my opening remarks at the beginning of the school year, I think it bears repeating that, as your pastor, I am here to support you in your ministry and role as parent and chief educator of your family. At your child’s baptism, you answered “yes” to the questions, announcing to all that you would take seriously your role in bringing up your child in the practice of the faith. I am grateful that you take this seriously. From time to time this year, I’d like to supplement what I write in the bulletin, with these remarks and column for our parish school.

See you Sunday at Mass: It is important: that the family that prays together, stays together! We miss you and your family when you are not present to worship God as the Body of Christ. Saint Paul says that each part of the body is important, though we do different things. As we practice being God’s family and God’s good stewards, we remember that we give 10% of our time, talent and treasure back to God, as the Bible says, “as the first fruits of our labors.” Let’s see that the habit of worshipping God puts God and our parish family first and not the other that may easily distract us and our priorities. It’s always God, family and then the rest of our lives!

Morning Prayer at 8:00 a.m.: Another source of spiritual enrichment is the church’s Morning Prayer. Many of you drive your child to school. Why not join the Blessed Sacrament Community and other parishioners in praying together to start the day? As you park and walk your child to the Family Life Center entrance, come on over then to the Blessed Sacrament Chapel to join us for the 20 minutes of prayer. As we approach the “high holy seasons” of the liturgical year, think of building this into your schedule once a week.

Prayer in the Presence of the Blessed Sacrament: Or may I suggest an hour of prayer before you pick up your child? Or a time in the later evening after your children have gone to bed? Having that one hour of week in prayer will change and deepen your life! I think you are getting my point so far in this newsletter: we are here to help deepen your prayer life and help you organize your life with God, first and foremost being the “center of your life.”

SESA: We used to have a singles organization in the parish called “SESA” that stood for “spiritual,” “educational,” “social” and “apostolic” (or service). This organization, like the parish’s mission, wanted to insure that all of its gatherings had one of these components, as our parish still does today! So let me focus on some fun things coming up in our parish’s life:  Sunday 3:00 p.m. Trunk or Treat – a fundraiser for the youth group  Saturday, November 11, 6:30 p.m. Taste of the Town – a fundraiser for our school with the first $2,000 going to the music and art teachers for enrichment of these programs with grants for our students. Our parishioners work hard (most with no students in our school) to raise funds directly for the school’s budget and keep our tuition reasonable. {Reminder: 15% of our school budget’s income depends on fundraisers that’s why Catholic schools always have so many.] We will have the most restaurants ever! And great auction items that will make great holiday gifts and support our school. ANNIVERSARY RAFFLE: We don’t have Bingo anymore- so we need this raffle to be successful to support our fundraiser.  Thursday, November 30: Ladies Guild’s Ladies Night Out

Some spiritual items coming up for your calendar:  Wednesday, November 1: All Saint Day Mass at 9:00 a.m.  Wednesday, November 15, 7:00 p.m. in Eymard Room: Who is Eymard? An hour-long talk introducing you to the founder of the religious order that administers our parish – and an incredible saint – with spiritual guru Bro. Perez, SSS  Wednesday, November 29, 7:00 p.m. in church: Taizé Prayer – a holy hour with mantras, singing, silence and scripture.

We never stop learning! Even as a , I attend continuing education classes to be a better leader and of Christ. Let’s do this together as we enrich minds and nourish souls! Thanks for being partners in ministry, forming our little disciples in to great apostolic leaders for our church’s future! Let us continue to pray for each other!

In Christ our ,

Reverend John Thomas Lane, SSS Pastor & SPB Graduate – 1979
