Field trip program Erasmus + LIVE ON THE KARST in Lozère from 15 to 19 may 2017

LIVE ON THE KARST (2015 – 2018) : studies, conservation and highlighted valuation of the karst and karst water resources in mediterranean area. This ERASMUS + project LIVE ON THE KARST is a Cooperation for Innovation and the exchange of good practices European Community project. This Strategic partnerships include 4 schools : Gimnazija Gian Rinaldo Carli from Koper (Slovenia), Solski center Srecka Kosovelana from Sezana (Slovenia), I.I.S. Levi – Ponti from Mirano (Italia) and Lycée Peytavin from Mende (France). 38 students with 8 teachers from Slovenia and Italia will meet 23 french students with 5 teachers and many scientific and institutional partnerships. For this second international meeting, in France, we prepare scientific investigations in the field and explorations into underground environment (touristic caves and for volunteers, caving with French federation of caving which provide all the equipment and the care safely). The second day, we will practice together canoe on river to study water environment, with French federation of canoe which provide the care safely. Working in small groups of 10 -11, students will research in autonomous to collect data in the field, and practice in workshops for multidisciplinary scientific observation, investigation and discussion in the field, to understand and explain the formation of karst and karstic aquifers and the human way of life on these plateau named “Causses”. On each day, a time is reserved for students to produced short research reports, didactic tools, and perennial and innovative teaching resources (take your portable computers and digital cameras).

Sunday may 14th 2017 In the evening, arrival of italian and slovenian students. Accommodation in Village de gîtes du Chapitre in Mende 9 houses for 6 people are reserved (1 for mens teachers, 1 for women teacher, 4 for students boys, 3 for students girls)

From granitic Mont Lozère to limestone plateau Les Bondons. Day 1 – Monday may 15th Malaval Cave exploration (caving level 2) / A walk in menhir country.

8h15 – 8h45 Briefing in classroom near accommodation 9h Coaches departing 10h La Fage (Mont Lozère) → Landscape on Cham des bondons : walking trip (with backpack with picnic and spare clothes after caving). 12h Picnic and staggered entry in famous white aragonite speleothems cave Grotte Malaval / another group (non caving persons) hiking on sentier des Menhirs des Bondons. 16h30 Coaches departing 17h – 18h Guided tour in Lycée Peytavin – Welcome reception by the headmaster, Mme Langrand. 18h – 19h Overview working in classroom near accommodation 19h - 19h30 Time out 19h30 Meal time near accommodation 20h30 Evening The Tarn River Canyons : from Castelbouc castle on the rock to Day 2 – Tuesday may 16th Sainte Enimie medieval village by Canoe. Historic village visit. The Grand Sites emblematic landscapes.

8h15 – 8h45 Briefing in classroom near accommodation 9h Coaches departing for Castelbouc 10h Arrival and began activities / first group departure on Canoe. 10h30 - 15h30 Field trip on Canoe on Tarn river. 4 stops for half an hour for scientific investigation activities : conductivity measurement, biodiversity workshop, workshop about Beaver and invertebrate aquatic species, workshop about cyanobacteria, workshop about restoration of ecological continuity, workshop about the riparian river area, … Picnic on the river bank. Bring a change of clothing and footwear, aquatic clothes. Everybody come on canoe, all equipment and life jackets are provided. 15h30 - 16h30 Guided tour (by french students) in Ste Enimie, medieval village. 16h30 - 17h20 La Burle spring visit, management issue around the “Grand site” by Syndicat mixte du grand Site des Gorges du Tarn et de la Jonte – Town Hall reception in Sainte Enimie. 17h30 Coaches departing 18h – 19h Overview working in classroom near accommodation 19h-19h30 Time out 19h30 Meal time near accommodation 20h30 Free evening + optional caving in the Briquette Cave (for 25 students volunteers)

On Causse Méjean, part 1 : Aven Armand cave (touristic cave). Day 3 – Wednesday may 17th The world heritage Causses and Cevennes site as a continuing cultural landscape of Mediterranean agropastoralism.

Causse Sauveterre, dolina and typical karstic landscape. Day 5 – Friday may 19th Open spaces short-grass prairies conservation. Mende town visit. Works on didactical ressources.

Presentation by Cévennes National Park scientist about restoration and sustainable management of limestone plateau's dry grasslands, problematic issue of natural closing in of the vegetation following agricultural abandonment of these zones. Picnic on the field. 13h30 Coaches departing 14h Reception at the Town Hall by Major of Mende. 15h - 16h Guided tour by french students in Mende 16h – 18h Overview working and synthesis reporting. Presentation of Didactic tools. 18h – 19h30 timeout 19h30 Meal time near accommodation 20h30 Free evening, Mende by night In late evening : coaches departing for Italia and Slovenia.
