    Pakistan’s ‘Mainstreaming’ Jihadis Vinay Kaura, Aparna Pande The emergence of the religious right-wing as a formidable political force in Pakistan seems to be an outcome of direct and indirect patron- age of the dominant military over the years. Ever since the creation of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan in 1947, the military establishment has formed a quasi alliance with the conservative religious elements who define a strongly Islamic identity for the country. The alliance has provided Islamism with regional perspectives and encouraged it to exploit the concept of jihad. This trend found its most obvious man- ifestation through the Afghan War. Due to the centrality of Islam in Pakistan’s national identity, secular leaders and groups find it extreme- ly difficult to create a national consensus against groups that describe themselves as soldiers of Islam. Using two case studies, the article ar- gues that political survival of both the military and the radical Islamist parties is based on their tacit understanding. It contends that without de-radicalisation of jihadis, the efforts to ‘mainstream’ them through the electoral process have huge implications for Pakistan’s political sys- tem as well as for prospects of regional peace. As it has got its most important status in the world’s media to popularize the newspaper, there is a distinct lack of comparative research on the media coverage of sports. To minimize the gap, this search draws attention on sports coverage during the London Olympics, 2012 from three different newspapers of different languages. The coverages were recorded considering the preview, competition and review phases. The results show that the total coverage of the English newspaper, the Telegraph (36039 sq. cm.) was more than the other two Bengali and Hindi newspapers (9224 sq. cm. and 2599 sq. cm. respectively). The female performers got more attention (34942 sq. cm.) than the male performers (12920 sq. cm.). All the three newspapers provided maximum coverage in the competition phase rather than the other two phases. The English newspaper provided more attention in preview of the main competition also in comparison to the other two newspapers. It has concluded that the coverage of the print media depends mainly on the performance of the athletes, popularity of the performers and intensity of the competition.

    IBBY-Asahi Reading Promotion Award 2018, remarks by Shin-ichi Kawarada, The Asahi Shimbun, 30 August 2018, Athens, Greece Kalimera sas. I am so glad to join the IBBY international congress in Athens and it is an honor for me to meet everyone at the ceremony of IBBY-Asahi reading promotion award today. I am a chief of the Rome bureau of the Japanese daily newspaper The Asahi Shimbun and I am in charge of the Mediterranean countries including Greece. For your information, the Asahi Shimbun is one of the leading daily broadsheet written in Japanese and we deliver about six million copies to families in Japan every morning. I am a correspondent in Rome and I write articles every day to send to Japan covering every topic, not only politics and economics but also culture and fine arts. However, I’m not good at writing even now. I am very curious to see the parts of the world I’ve never seen. Especially in my childhood, I loved to daydream and spend time in a fictional world as if I were a character in a story. Books transported me to different worlds. I am so grateful to my parents for giving me a lot of illustrated and classic children’s books that every child should read. I present here some books which are so memorable to me and that I can’t forget to this day. One is a Japanese illustrated book “Nenaiko dareda”, it means “Who wouldn’t sleep?” , which my mother often read to me when I was two or three years old.
