The Harmon Stadium field was dedicated before the initial UNF-Jacksonville University game in March. UNF quickly gained area and national recognition, winning 21 consec- utive games, a record that still stands for the Ospreys, though they came close with 19 in 1989. The inaugural season was filled with many firsts, including the first no-hitter, thrown by junior Phil Black. The Ospreys advanced to postseason, defeating Nova 11-1 in the Florida Conference Tournament. The team advanced to the Area V tournament and finished the season at 47-17. Junior third baseman Kenny Layfield became the first player to earn All-America honors. Rhodes was named the NAIA District 25 Coach of the Year and the Florida Diamond Club NAIA Coach of the Year.
