Since 1945, we have trained the very best performers, directors, theatre production artists and producers. We are committed to ensuring our community of over 500 students is representative and that drama training is accessible to all. Opened in 2018, our home in Peckham was conceived in partnership with Southwark Council as a truly 21st-century drama school and a creative arts hub for all. Our state-of-the-art facilities include the 200-seat Mountview Theatre (made possible by a £1m donation from Sir Cameron Mackintosh), the 80-seat Backstage Theatre, 21 acting/dance studios, TV and radio suites and production workshops. In recognition of their extraordinary work in establishing Mountview’s new home and for their commitment to promoting inclusivity, Joint Chief Executives Stephen Jameson and Sarah Preece were presented with Olivier Awards in 2020. Shortlisted for the RIBA London Regional Awards and Stage Awards Theatre Building of the Year, our new home is not only a vital resource for our students, but also an emerging centre of excellence for accessibility in the arts. Our fully accessible building is home to leading disability arts practitioners Candoco Dance Company amongst a number of other resident professional companies. Today’s students will join a constellation of graduates making their mark on the profession. Actor Noah Thomas (Everybody’s Talking About Jamie), Actor/Writer Amy Trigg (winner, inaugural Women’s Prize for Playwriting 2020), Olivier Award-winning Actor/Writer Giles Terera MBE (Hamilton) and Michael Longhurst, Artistic Director of the Donmar Warehouse are just a few of our notable alumni. This theatre was made possible by an extraordinary gift from Sir Cameron Mackintosh and the Mackintosh Foundation. Cameron’s generosity enabled the completion of this theatre, where generations of MOUNTVIEW Mountview students will develop their craft. We are profoundly grateful for his championship and support and are proud to honour his commitment to the future of theatre. Caplin Former Commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service Mortimer Caplin was born in New York in 1916. He came to Charlottesville in 1933, graduating from the College in 1937 and the Law School in 1940. During the Normandy invasion, he served as U.S. Navy beachmaster and was cited as a member of the initial landing force on Omaha Beach. He continued his federal service as Commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service under President Kennedy from 1961 to 1964. When he entered U.Va. at age 17, Mr. Caplin committed himself to all aspects of University life. From 1933-37, he was a star athlete in the University’s leading sport—boxing—achieving an undefeated record for three years in the mid-1930s and winning the NCAA middleweight title in spite of suffering a broken hand. He also served as coach of the boxing team and was president of the University Players drama group. At the School of Law, he was editor-in-chief of the Virginia Law Review and graduated as the top student in his class. In addition to his deep commitment to public service, he is well known for his devotion to teaching and to the educational process and to advancing tax law. Mr. Caplin taught tax law at U.Va. from 1950-61, while serving as president of the Atlantic Coast Conference.

    Friday, June 29, 2012 DIVA TALK Chatting With Evita’s Christina DeCicco, the ‘Alternate Eva’ By ANDREW GANS For those like myself who like to catch as many different actresses playing the role of Evita as possible, there is some exciting news: For two weeks this summer former Wicked star Christina DeCicco will step into the title role of the Tony Award-nominated Broadway revival of the Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice musical at the Marquis Theatre. DeCicco, who normally performs the role twice weekly — Wednesday evenings and Saturday matinees — will play the late Eva Peron six performances a week July 12-19 and August (dates to be announced shortly) while Argentinian actress and Olivier winner Elena Roger films a movie (during those two weeks Jessica Lea Patty will be the Alternate Eva). (For the record, this diva lover has enjoyed the Evitas of Tony winner Patti LuPone, Derin Altay, Nancy Opel, Donna Marie Elio [now Asbury], Judy McLane, Natalie Toro, Felicia Finley, Elena Roger, and, come July 7, Ms. DeCicco.) Although DeCicco has only gotten to play the role about 20 times, her co-stars have lavished her with praise. Rachel Potter, who plays Peron’s Mistress, previously told me, “Christina is from New York. She’s an American through and through, and she brings such a different energy, but it’s so, so great, and I hope that more and more people will come see her because she’s fantastic....Her voice is stunning, and we’re all very, very proud of her because obviously being an alternate is never an easy job.

She has starred in numerous West End productions and on Broadway and in concert internationally, sweeping to fame when she created her award winning performance as Eva Peron in Evita . Shortly afterwards she created the role of Grizabella in the original production of Cats and the classic song Memory became one of Elaine's many hit records. Further theatre productions: Hair , Jesus Christ Superstar , Grease , Billy , Chess (with her record breaking number one hit I Know Him So Well with Barbara Dickson), Anything Goes , Piaf , Sunset Boulevard in London and Broadway, The King and I, Sweeney Todd (New York City Opera). She has worked twice with Sir Peter Hall's Theatre Company in The Misanthrope and Feydeau’s Where There’s A Will. Elaine has performed in concert worldwide from The White House to The Great Hall of the People in Beijing, from the Bolshoi to Sydney Opera House. She has appeared in many television roles including her own TV specials and Royal Variety Shows. She has recorded 18 solo albums (4 multi Platinum and 9 consecutive Gold) and 6 cast albums and has been honoured with a number of awards: Society of West End Theatre Award for Best Actress in a Musical and Variety Club Award for Show Business Personality of the year (1978); Variety Club Award for Musical Artiste (1986) and Variety Club Award for Best Actress (1995); Gold Badge of Merit from the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors (1994); HMV Lifetime Achievement Award (1996); Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Operatic and Dramatic Association (1999); Order of the British Empire for services to Musical Theatre (1995), Drama Desk Award nomination for Outstanding Actress in a Musical (2004) and Variety Club Special Presentation for 40 Years on Stage (2009).
