We hope you enjoy your time in this wonderful part the South Coast. It has been six months since the last issue of Time Out and lots has happened, both at Kookaburra Retreat and around the area. We would like to express our gratitude to members who have given their time and energy to keep SDFA and Kookaburra Retreat able to continue supporting local families. As families living in the Shoalhaven, regardless of posting time we need to be involved with the community. This involvement can be through schools, sporting and service clubs, community groups and by financially giving to worthwhile community projects. Ongoing activities and events that our committee and members organise include, a twice weekly social catch up with the option of using the creche services. Members can use this time to relax, catch up on their emails, online banking or craft projects etc. Another popular weekly activity is playgroup, allowing Mums (and Dads) to meet other parents with young children in a relaxed and social environment. Monthly, we conduct craft workshops and fitness sessions (both with the option of using the creche service). We invite all local families to visit our website regularly to see what’s on, what interests you and maybe what you can offer SDFA. The coordinator and committee are always open to new ideas and meeting members interests. See you soon at ‘Kooka’. • Changes to Driver Licence Sanctions in Your CLSD Region
Changes to Driver Licence Sanctions in Your CLSD Region In 2020, Revenue NSW introduced a hardship program focused on First Nations people and young people. As a result, the use of driver licence sanctions for overdue fine debt changed on Monday 28th September 2020 in some locations. How are overdue fines and driver licence sanctions related? If a person has overdue fines, their driver licence may be suspended. The driver licence suspension may be removed if the person: • pays a lump sum to Revenue NSW, or • enters a payment plan with Revenue NSW, or • is approved for a WDO. A driver licence suspension can be applied for multiple reasons, so even after being told that a driver licence suspension for unpaid fines has been removed, people should always double check that it is OK to drive by contacting Service NSW. Driver licence restrictions can also be put on interstate licences and cannot be removed easily. If you have a client in this situation, they should get legal advice. What has changed? Now, driver licence sanctions will not be imposed as a first response to unpaid fines for enforcement orders that were issued on or after 28 September 2020 to First Nations people and young people who live in the target locations. What are the target locations? Locations that the Australian Bureau of Statistics classifies as: • very remote, • remote • outer regional, and • Inner regional post codes where at least 9% of the population are First Nations People. Included target locations on the South Coast are the towns of Batemans Bay, Bega, Bodalla, Eden, Eurobodalla, Mogo, Narooma, Nowra Hill, Nowra Naval PO, Merimbula, Pambula, Tilba and Wallaga Lake.

  • Building Blocks 2021 Illawarra Shoalhaven
BUILDING BLOCKS A PRACTICAL APPROACH TO INFRASTRUCTURE AND LAND SUPPLY Illawarra and Shoalhaven Edition August 2021 UDIA BUILDING BLOCKS NSW ILLAWARRA & SHOALHAVEN Message from the CEO Steve Mann UDIA NSW CEO The Illawarra Shoalhaven is at a crisis point as we face a rapidly decreasing supply of serviced land for development. The critical shortage of greenfield housing extends throughout the region and is having a major impact on deteriorating housing affordibility. House sales have seen up to a 50% lift beyond market expectations and we are well ahead of projected lot releases. This is the result of a combination of factors including record low interest rates, regional migration, government home purchase incentives and COVID-19 induced demand for space. Our 2018 UDIA NSW Building Blocks report proposed several enabling infrastructure projects for the Illawarra Shoalhaven to support greenfield housing in the key urban release areas. Over the past three years, not much has changed. In-migration is increasing, as people look for regional housing solutions out of Sydney. Whilst there have been lots released in West Lake Illawarra and apartment development in the Wollongong CBD and Kiama township, the pace of development is not keeping up with demand and house prices continue to climb. Over the past 12 months, we have seen house prices rise by more than 20% in Shoalhaven and 12% in Wollongong. Kiama now has an average house price of $1million. In June 2021, the Minister for Planning and Public Spaces released the Illawarra Shoalhaven Regional Plan 2041 and in August 2021, Transport for NSW (TfNSW) finalised the Illawarra Shoalhaven Regional Transport Plan.

It documents the investigation of an approximately 75-hectare parcel of land known as 2541 Warrah Road (Lot 24 in DP714096), and 12A-C Warrah Road (Lots 21-23 in DP14096), North Nowra NSW, in the Shoalhaven region, which is proposed for rezoning as part of a Planning Proposal. The assessment has included a review of relevant contextual information about landform, geology and soils, documented archaeology, Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal land use, field survey and Aboriginal community consultation in accordance with the requirements outlined in clause 80C of the National Parks and Wildlife Regulation 2009. Background study and field survey indicated that historical land use had resulted in significant impacts that were likely to have disturbed or destroyed any intact or extensive evidence of past Aboriginal use in the area subject to the Planning Proposal. Consistent with these observations, the only Aboriginal archaeological remains located after several field surveys are two low density artefact scatters known as EGP-28 (AHIMS #52-5-0307) and Duke 7 (AHIMS #52-5-0372).

Augu-.t. 1974 Illawarra Hi\torical Society Bulletin WOLLONGONG HIGH SCHOOL IN ITS EARLY DAYS: The writer's secondary ~chooling sat astride the four year segment before and after Wollongong High School was born, and also coincided ''ith the 1914-1918 World War. Prior to 1917 secondary education on the South Coast was provided b\ \\hat was known as Wollongong District School, which was housed in fi~;e rooms of the Smith Street Primary School with an enrolment of less than two hundred and a staff of eight. The headmaster was in charge of both schools, and we mixed in the corridors and playground with the primary school pupils. Fifty years ago Wollongong had four each of doctors, dentists, chem ists, solicitors and barbers; buses were yet to appear and public transport '"as catered for by Beattie's coaches, drawn by two horses, which met all trains and delivered passengers as far afield as Cliff Road and Smith's Hill. Primary schools south of Wollongong from which pupils were eligible for secondary education included the one-teacher schools at Tomerong, Huskisson, Falls Creek, Nowra Hill, Pyree, Terara, Bolong, Bomaderry, Cambewarra, Mcroo, Jasper's Brush, Toolijooa, Far Mcadow, Foxground, Omega, Jcrrara, Bombo, Dunmore, Minnamurra, Croom, Tullimbar, Ton garra, Marshall Mount, Avondale, Wongawilli, Berkeley, West Dapto and !>C\'Cral others hard to recall. North of Wollongong the narrow strip between mountain and sea, a non-farming community with population clustered in mining towns strung along the railway, made the one-man school a rarity, and places such as Fairy Meadow, Balgownie, Corrimal, Bellambi, Bulli and places to the north each possessed schools with several teachers.
