Chapter Phylogeny and Functional Morphology of Diptera (Flies) Benjamin Kongyeli Badii Abstract The order Diptera includes all true flies. Members of this order are the most ecologically diverse and probably have a greater economic impact on humans than any other group of insects. The application of explicit methods of phylogenetic and morphological analysis has revealed weaknesses in the traditional classification of dipteran insects, but little progress has been made to achieve a robust, stable clas- sification that reflects evolutionary relationships and morphological adaptations for a more precise understanding of their developmental biology and behavioral ecol- ogy. The current status of Diptera phylogenetics is reviewed in this chapter. Also, key aspects of the morphology of the different life stages of the flies, particularly characters useful for taxonomic purposes and for an understanding of the group’s biology have been described with an emphasis on newer contributions and progress in understanding this important group of insects. Keywords: Tephritoidea, Diptera flies, Nematocera, Brachycera metamorphosis, larva 1. Introduction Phylogeny refers to the evolutionary history of a taxonomic group of organisms. Phylogeny is essential in understanding the biodiversity, genetics, evolution, and ecology among groups of organisms [1, 2]. Functional morphology involves the study of the relationships between the structure of an organism and the function of the various parts of an organism. The old adage “form follows function” is a guiding principle of functional morphology. It helps in understanding the ways in which body structures can be used to produce a wide variety of different behaviors, including moving, feeding, fighting, and reproducing. It thus, integrates concepts from physiology, evolution, anatomy and development, and synthesizes the diverse ways that biological and physical factors interact in the lives of organisms [3]. -

Adaptations of Insects at Cloudbridge Nature Reserve, Costa Rica Aiden Vey Cloudbridge Nature Reserve July 2007 Introduction Costa Rica’s location between North and South America, its neotropical climate and variety of elevations and habitats makes it one of the biodiversity hotspots of the world. Despite being only 51,100km² in size, it contains about 5% (505,000) of the world’s species. Of these, 35,000 insect species have been recorded and estimates stand at around 300,000. The more well known insects include the 8,000 species of moth and 1,250 butterflies - almost 10% of the world total, and 500 more than in the USA! Other abundant insects of Costa Rica include ants, beetles, wasps and bees, grasshoppers and katydids. The following article presents a select few aspects of the insect life found at Cloudbridge, a nature reserve in the Talamanca mountain range. Relationships Insects play many important roles in Costa Rica, including pollination of the bountiful flora and as a food supply for many other organisms. The adult Owl butterfly (Caligo atreus, shown at right) feeds on many Heliconiaceae and Musaceae (banana) species, in particular on the rotting fruit. They are pollinators of these plants, but also use the leaves to lay eggs on. When hatched, the larvae remain on the plant and eat the leaves. Being highly gregarious, they can cause significant damage, and are considered as pests (especially in banana plantations). However, there are a number of insects that parasitise the Caligo larvae, including the common Winthemia fly (left) and Trichogramma and Ichneumon wasps, which act as biological control agents. -

We show that in moth flies (Clogmia, Lutzomyia), a maternal transcript isoform of odd-paired (Zic) is localized in the anterior egg and adopted the role of anterior determinant without essential protein change. Additionally, Clogmia lost maternal germ plasm, which contributes to embryo polarity in fruit flies (Drosophila). In culicine (Culex, Aedes) and anopheline mosquitoes (Anopheles), embryo polarity rests on a previously unnamed zinc finger gene (cucoid), or pangolin (dTcf), respectively. These genes also localize an alternative transcript isoform at the anterior egg pole. Basal-branching crane flies (Nephrotoma) also enrich maternal pangolin transcript at the anterior egg pole, suggesting that pangolin functioned as ancestral axis determinant in flies. They are able to survive in and colonise practically all freshwater habitats, and some species can tolerate harsh environmental conditions. They are therefore both a qualitatively and quantitatively important group of biological indicators for assessing fresh- water systems. On the other hand their determination at the species level is very difficult. This is in part due to a lack of taxo- nomic work in the group, but also the absence of comprehensive determination keys, that meet the needs of water managers. As a result, the aquatic larvae of the Diptera often play a subordinate role in water management. In light of the EU Water Framework Directive the present work is a first step in improving the integration of the important group of the Diptera in water management practice: a comprehensive determination key, which is geared at water managers. The key includes 60 taxa, largely at the family and genus level. In contrast to already existing keys the present work tries to differentiate the taxa on the basis of simple and user-friendly characters.
