God’s Connect Plus Bonus Tracks Including Nikki (Previously Never Released On CD) Me And My Mens (Previously Unreleased) and more... As an original member of The Beatnuts; one of the most highly regarded groups in the rap game; Al’ Tariq (then known as Fashion) made their first two releases holy in the hands of Hip Hop junkies! His sharp story-telling and skilled delivery made him a favorite of the trio amongst fans. Around 1994, after the release and touring of the album known to many as Street Level (reissue soon to be available for the first time on 2xLP), and the internal problems of being a part of a group, Al‘ Tariq decided he needed to do his own thing. Putting together a crew of cunning MC’s and reconciling with his fellow Beatnuts (Psycho Les & Ju Ju), the album titled God Connections was unleashed in 1996. Unfortunately, Correct Records, the label that originally released the project imploded shortly after the street date. Without the promo- tional wheel turning, this record was lost at birth. It’s since become an extremely sought after album and for good reason too, boasting early productions by NO I.D., V.I.C. and of course The Beatnuts! This deluxe re-issue comes housed in a sharp digipak with booklet and includes bonus cuts with production by NO I.D., extended artwork with recently found photos from the original session by famed photographer B+, and liner notes featuring track by track analysis by Al’ Tariq himself! # 1/08 JAN|FEB KAPU ZINE EDITORIAL Salut! Was passiert ansonsten in der neuen KAPU-Saison?

Tyree: Gender and Sexuality Representations in Hip Hop Gender and Sexuality Representations in Hip Hop Music Teaching Media - Hip Hop Submission Dr. Tia C. M. Tyree March 2013 1. Summary and rationale for assignment When MTV aired in 1981, music videos took the stage in pop culture in a way that they had not prior to the channel’s inception. Since this time, music videos have become a staple in the music industry, and they provide the opportunity for record companies to promote new artists and songs. However, as a key part of pop culture, music videos, more specifically rap videos, have come under criticism, because they increasingly present often negative and controversial representations of women. Further, research shows youth learn about sexuality, gender roles, and relationship from them. As rap music is an international medium that influences how Black women are viewed in the world, it is critical for us to investigate its lyrics and representations. How gender and sex are characterized is a contentious space in Hip Hop. However, the analyses of voice and representation are critical in any mass medium.

  • The Effects of Hip-Hop and Rap on Young Women in Academia
The Effects of Hip-Hop and Rap on Young Women in Academia by Sandra C Zichermann A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Education Sociology in Education Ontario Institute for Studies in Education University of Toronto © Copyright by Sandra C Zichermann 2013 The Effects of Hip-Hop and Rap on Young Women in Academia Sandra C Zichermann Doctor of Education Sociology in Education University of Toronto 2013 Abstract This thesis investigates the rise of the cultures and music of hip-hop and rap in the West and its effects on its female listeners and fans, especially those in academia. The thesis consists of two parts. First I conducted a content analysis of 95 lyrics from the book, Hip-Hop & Rap: Complete Lyrics for 175 Songs (Spence, 2003). The songs I analyzed were performed by male artists whose lyrics repeated misogynist and sexist messages. Second, I conducted a focus group with young female university students who self-identify as fans of hip-hop and/or rap music. In consultation with my former thesis supervisor, I selected women enrolled in interdisciplinary programmes focused on gender and race because they are equipped with an academic understanding of the potential damage or negative effects of anti-female or negative political messaging in popular music. My study suggests that the impact of hip-hop and rap music on young women is both positive and negative, creating an overarching feeling of complexity for some young female listeners who enjoy music that is infused with some lyrical messages they revile.

  • In the Realm of the Bossbitch
HYSTERIA issue #3 Abjection 2014 hystericalfeminisms.com In the Realm of the BossBITCH By Katie Cercone From underground raves to appearances on the main stage of global internet culture the goddess embodied within the Female MC reminds us to sing, dance and listen to her essential stories. From Queen Latifah, Lauryn Hill and Rah Digga to Lil Kim and Nicki Minaj, women in hip hop embody the contemporary archetypes of Goddess Worship. Our High Priestess of the beat; the Female MC is archetypal and trance inducing. She reigns over and is beyond language. Staking her claim within the initially male dominated world of hip hop, she is becoming increasingly visible and taking many different forms. The work of artists Noelle Lorraine Williams and Marcia Jones underscores the parallels between hip hop - a holistic folk art born in the South Bronx in the 1970s amongst Black and Latino youth - and spiritual lineages outside the mainstream. Female MCʼs new to the scene, such as Angel Haze, and those associated with Brooklynʼs queer underground, including BONES and Cunt Mafia, have built on earlier foundations giving nuance and character to the voice of women in rap. For male and female artists alike, hip hopʼs reach now encircles the planet, staining the world with a transnational, spiritual swag; an honest speech aimed at power structures speaking truth to power that far exceeds its original local resonances. The nation language of hip hop, an earth-based wisdom vernacular, has many links to shamanist blending dialects from around the world. Like a “howl, or a shout, or a machine gun or the wind or a wave,” it is both contemporary and ancient.i Shamanism -- an umbrella term for a variety of spiritual practices involving dance, song, ritual and the imbibing of medicinal plants to achieve altered states of consciousness and access to the spirit world.
