PDF the Urology Foundation Chief Executive Appointment Brief August 2021 Introduction I have had first-hand experience of what it means to have world class care from an experienced Urologist. He saved my life and for that I will always be immensely grateful. There is a straight line from my experience to The Urology Foundation. TUF funded a considerable amount of the training for surgeons who had to learn how to use what were then the very new Robotic machines. Today that technology is commonplace and TUF played a key role in delivering this expertise to surgeons for their patients across the UK. We are now at a pivotal moment where TUF is seeking to recruit an outstanding person to take over as Chief Executive. Far too many people suffer from Urological conditions and I know that we can contribute meaningfully to improving the outcomes for these patients because of our well targeted support for key areas of research. We have on our board many of the leading Urologists in the country together with some very experienced individuals from the private sector. We are deeply committed to the growth of the charity which we believe has huge potential to grow. I believe that this a unique opportunity for the right individual to build on their expertise and experience, well supported by the board, and also to be very empowered to provide personal and distinctive leadership. The money we raise is invested directly into research to find better treatments and cures, and in training for urology professionals to care for and help people affected by urology conditions. Appointment Brief | August 2021 5 Future Plans The UK has a growing problem, as 1 in 2 of us will suffer from a urological cancer or condition as the population ages. Prostate cancer has now overtaken breast cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, with nearly 50,000 cases per annum. The incidence of other urological cancers is also expected to increase by 26% (kidney cancer) and ~13% (penile & testicular cancers) by 2035. Survival at 10+ years for bladder and kidney cancers is still only 50%. On top of this, the prevalence of bladder and incontinence problems, urinary tract infections, benign prostate problems and kidney stones are also increasing. This is leading to major morbidity and quality of life issues for these patients and places a growing burden on the healthcare service, and on the doctors and nurses working within it. Allied to this, the way in which healthcare is delivered will need to change, with an emphasis on personalised medicine and community-based services which are designed to enhance both patient outcomes and experience. We want to ensure that urology is primed to lead this revolution in healthcare. The key to meeting these challenges is to develop a cadre of top-quality urological professionals, across the UK and Northern Ireland, who have access to the very latest research developments and technological innovations, and who put excellence of care and continuous professional development at their core, and we will develop research and training programmes with these outcomes in mind. We selected 255 patients and 104 partners of Guy’s Hospital Urology Centre participated in our group seminars over a 12 month period. Urology clinical nurse specialists delivered three seminar presentations on continence management, erectile dysfunction and early complications to a group of patients and partners. Participant satisfaction was assessed with an anonymous questionnaire using Likert items. Pre-seminar questionnaires indicated that only 23 patients felt prepared for surgery prior to the session. All participants reported to have received adequate information to deal with complications of surgery following the session and all stated a preference to a group seminar with peer support rather than individual consultations. Over 12 months, 30 specialist nursing hours were required to deliver education via seminar sessions to 359 patients.
