  • Ecological Importance of Benthic Macroinvertebrates in Utah Lake
Ecological Importance of Benthic Macroinvertebrates in Utah Lake File name: Ecological Role of Benthic Macroinvertebrates in Utah Lake Focus on the Keystone Taxon Chironomidae and HABs Version 1.2 Ecological Importance of Benthic Macroinvertebrates in Utah Lake With a Focus on the Role of the Keystone Taxon Chironomidae on HABs Progress Report January 28, 2017 By: David C. Richards, Ph. D. OreoHelix Consulting Phone: 406.580.7816 Email: [email protected] and Theron Miller, Ph.D. Jordan River Farmington Bay Water Quality Council OreoHelix Consulting 1 Ecological Importance of Benthic Macroinvertebrates in Utah Lake Introduction Benthic macroinvertebrates are a critical component of the ecology and ecosystem functioning of Utah Lake. They are a major link between sediment chemistry, water column chemistry, nutrient cycling, benthic algae, phytoplankton, and Utah Lake’s food web including carp, game fish, June suckers, waterfowl, shorebirds, etc. Benthic invertebrates provide underappreciated but invaluable ecosystem services and are keystone taxa instrumental for the functioning of Utah Lake’ ecosystem. It has become clear that several dominant benthic taxa, primarily chironomids, play a key role in the timing and intensity of harmful algal blooms (HABs) in the lake. Very few studies have been conducted on the benthic invertebrate assemblages in Utah Lake (Barnes and Toole 1981, Spencer and Denton 2003, Shiozawa and Barnes 1977) and none were conducted at the level and intensity that is presently being accomplished by this group. No study has ever examined the role of benthic invertebrates on HABs in Utah Lake, this is the first. Our research is also an important element of sediment chemistry, nutrients, and food web models that are presently being conducted by us and others on Utah Lake.

  • Latter-Day Saint Liturgy: the Administration of the Body and Blood of Jesus
religions Article Latter-Day Saint Liturgy: The Administration of the Body and Blood of Jesus James E. Faulconer Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship, Brigham Young University, Provo, UT 84602, USA; [email protected] Abstract: Latter-day Saint (“Mormon”) liturgy opens its participants to a world undefined by a stark border between the transcendent and immanent, with an emphasis on embodiment and relationality. The formal rites of the temple, and in particular that part of the rite called “the endowment”, act as a frame that erases the immanent–transcendent border. Within that frame, the more informal liturgy of the weekly administration of the blood and body of Christ, known as “the sacrament”, transforms otherwise mundane acts of living into acts of worship that sanctify life as a whole. I take a phenomenological approach, hoping that doing so will deepen interpretations that a more textually based approach might miss. Drawing on the works of Robert Orsi, Edward S. Casey, Paul Moyaert, and Nicola King, I argue that the Latter-day Saint sacrament is not merely a ritualized sign of Christ’s sacrifice. Instead, through the sacrament, Christ perdures with its participants in an act of communal memorialization by which church members incarnate the coming of the divine community of love and fellow suffering. Participants inhabit a hermeneutically transformed world as covenant children born again into the family of God. Keywords: Mormon; Latter-day Saint; liturgy; rites; sacrament; endowment; temple; memory Citation: Faulconer, James E. 2021. Latter-Day Saint Liturgy: The In 1839, in contrast to most other early nineteenth-century American religious leaders, Administration of the Body and Joseph Smith, the founder of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints1 said, “Being Blood of Jesus.

  • Non-Mormon Presence in 1880S Utah
The Pennsylvania State University The Graduate School College of Earth and Mineral Sciences THE WASP IN THE BEEHIVE: NON-MORMON PRESENCE IN 1880S UTAH A Thesis in Geography by Samuel A. Smith c 2008 Samuel A. Smith Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Science August 2008 The thesis of Samuel A. Smith was read and approved1 by the following: Deryck W. Holdsworth Professor of Geography Thesis Adviser Roger Downs Professor of Geography Karl Zimmerer Professor of Geography Head of the Department of Geography 1. Signatures on file in the Graduate School. iii Abstract Recent studies have reconsidered the Mormon Culture Region in light of its 1880{1920 transition to American political and economic norms. While these studies emphasize conflicts between the Mormon establishment and the non-Mormon federal government, Mormon/non-Mormon relations within Utah have received little direct attention. Based on religious affiliations recorded in the 1880 federal census of Utah Territory, this study uses historical GIS to visualize the composition of Utah's \Mormon" and \non-Mormon" towns. The results highlight the extensive presence of religious minorities in Utah's settlements. Case studies of farm villages, mining camps, and urban neighborhoods probe the social and economic contexts of non-Mormon presence in Utah. These studies, based on Sanborn maps and city directories, explore the geographical mosaic of Mormon and non-Mormon residence and business activity. These variegated patterns, often absent from historical accounts of the region, enable localized analyses of the ensuing decades of cultural conflict, transformation and assimilation. Keywords: Mormons, non-Mormons, Mormon Culture Region, Utah, 1880 Cen- sus, historical demography.
