Five high-profile progressive clawhammer artists answer common questions concerning the banjo Online banjo forums are filled with all sorts of questions from players interested in instrument choices, banjo set up, personal playing styles, technique, etc. As valuable as these forums might be, they can also be confusing for players trying to navigate advice posted from banjoists who's playing experience might range from a few weeks to literally decades. It was these forum discussions that started me thinking about how nice it would to have access to a collection of banjo related questions that were answered by some of the most respected "progressive" clawhammer banjoists performing today. I am very excited about this project as I don't believe any comprehensive collection of this nature has been published before… Mike Iverson 1 © 2013 by Mikel D. What recording have you made that best showcases this difference? Michael Miles: As musicians, I believe we are the sum of what he have heard. So the more you listen, the richer you get. My personal musical style on the banjo is in great part rooted in Doc Watson and JS Bach. Through Doc Watson, I learned about the phrasing of traditional music. Through Bach, I learned the majesty and reach of all music. -

A DOCUMENT GUIDE TO THE BANJO PLAYERS 1900 -2008 _____________________________________________________ The banjo is a little like corn-licker; you either love it or loathe it – but you can’t ignore it. Since its gradual evolution across the centuries the sound of the banjo, in its various forms, has permeated into folk, jazz, blues, country and gospel music and made stars of many of those who chose to play the instrument. According to master banjo player Earl Scruggs, the banjo had its origins in Arabia thousands of years ago: it consisted of a skin ‘head’ stretched over a hollow body and strung with three strings. This instrument was carried to the East with the spread of Islam. Negro slaves brought it to the United States from Africa. Other instruments similar to the banjo have existed in India (the ravenastron) and Egypt ( where it was known as a banit) but other names associated with it include bangie, banza, banjer and banjar. In general terms the four and five-string banjo has found most favour with folk musicians and one Joel Walker Sweeney is usually credited with ‘inventing’ the true American banjo but this now seems doubtful. In 1830 Sweeney, a native of Appomattox, Virginia, supposedly made a revolutionary modification by adding a fifth string, or chanterelle, higher in pitch and next to the lowest pitched string and secured by a peg halfway up the neck. This ‘new’ instrument became extremely popular throughout the United States, where it held a place in the affections of ordinary people throughout the nineteenth century. Although Joel Sweeney’s name is legendary and he will be forever linked with the five-string banjo, watercolour paintings executed long before his time depict the fifth string on plantation banjos. -

Weait School of Music ABSTRACT During the antebellum period, the town of Mount Vernon, Ohio had a flourishing music scene that included performances by both local amateur societies and professional touring groups. When Woodward Hall, located on the top floor of a four-story commercial building, opened its doors to the public in 1851, it provided the town with its first dedicated theater. Newspaper items and other early sources show that the hall was a focus of public culture in the 1850s, hosting concerts, plays, lectures, and art exhibits as well as community activities including dances, church fundraisers, and school exhibitions. The early source materials for Mount Vernon, however, like those for many small towns, are lacunary, and especially so in the case of Woodward Hall. These shortcomings are compensated, to some extent, by materials relating to theaters of similar size and age in other towns, which offer points of comparison for the Woodward and prove it to be a typical mid-nineteenth-century American theater in some respects, and a distinctive one in others. Modern-day music histories have heretofore been silent on the subject of music and opera houses in small towns despite Oscar Sonneck’s call, some ninety years ago, for local music historiography as a necessary first step in creating a complete history of American music. -

If you have any passion at all for bluegrass or old timey music then this will be (hands down) your album of the year. Loudon Wainwright is an artist I have long admired since I heard a song called “Samson and the Warden” (a wonderfully witty tale of a guy who doesn’t mind being in gaol so long as the warden doesn’t cut his hair) on an ABC radio show called “Room to Move” many years ago. A few years later he had his one and only “hit” with the novelty “Dead Skunk”. Now Loudon pundits will compare the instrumentation on this album with that on that song, and if a real pundit with that of his “The Swimming Song”. The backing is restrained. Banjo (Poole’s own instrument of choice), with guitar, some great mandolin (from Chris Thile) some fiddle (multi instrumentalist David Mansfield), some piano and harmonica and on a couple of tracks some horns. Now, Charlie Poole to the uninitiated was a major star in the very early days of country music. He is said to have pursued a musical career so he wouldn’t have to work and at the same time he could ensure his primary source of income, bootleg liquor, was properly distilled. He was no writer and adapted songs he had heard to his style. -

Sammy Shelor photo by Jennifer Buckler Sammy Shelor by Susan Marquez Sammy Shelor has been playing the banjo for as long as he can remember. Both of his grandfathers played banjo, and his great grandfather played the fiddle. “My great grandfather had a grist mill, and back then if you had a grist mill, you also had a still.” Charlie Poole, a banjo picker and singer who led the North Carolina Ramblers, lived about 25 miles east of where Sammy grew up in Patrick County, West Virginia during the band’s heyday in the late 1920s and early 1930s. “Poole liked to play where he could drink. My grandfather was born in 1903, and he would frequent the places Poole played, learning to play the banjo by watching Charlie Poole.” When Sammy was four years old, one of his grandfathers fashioned a banjo for him from a pressure cooker top. Hee-Haw was a popular television show at the time and Sammy watched it with his family. He learned to pick out Up on Cripple Creek by The Band, and his other grandfather told him that if he’d learn to play another song, he’d buy him a real banjo. “He bought me a Ventura banjo, and by the time I was ten years old I was playing with local bands. I’ve been totally blessed,” says Sammy. “It’s like both of my grandfathers planned out my life for me, and between the two of them, they kept me supplied with banjos until I went professional.” With influences including J.D. -

1 History of Minstrelsy, Its inner workings and business. "Minstrelsy is an ancient art." This project is to explore the inner working of minstrelsy. During its heyday, from the 1840s to the end of World War I it was the major exponent of entertainment in America. Minstrelsy has been around for centuries -from King David, to the medieval troubadours and finally to the shores of America. In America it took place before, during and after the emancipation of the Negro slaves and spread across the continent both with professional white and Negro groups (both using black face) and with minstrel shows produced by churches, schools and social organizations. Etc. While professional minstrels became less popular, minstrels did last long into the 20th century. (Personnel note-My father played bones in a church minstrel in the late 1930s and my brother and I (playing accordions) played in the olio part of a church minstrel in the 1940s.) Few forms or styles of entertainment last over generations. There are revivals but these are just points in time. An 'art' has an influence on a society. Rap music can be seen as a present day reversal of the minstrels. Eventually the public had problems accepting the minstrel with its black faced individuals. Strangely the height of minstrel happened after the Civil War. As with any art form, minstrelsy evolved, dropping its first part and became a spectacular revue taking the Olio into vaudeville. Black face was a familiar theatrical device in Europe (Shakespeare's Othello) as black was not permitted to be onstage. -

Using Spike Lee’s Bamboozled , the paper exposes the negative social stereotypes espoused by American entertainment media about blacks, and argues that Spike Lee’s film not only unravels that subversive Euro-American rhetoric, but also doubles as an intense social critique of that warped cultural dynamic. Saturday September 20, 1997 was just another normal day at "the ranch". The flag was run up the pole at dawn, but wait -----, bones were hanging on the mail box. What gives? This turns out to be the 1st Annual Bones Festival (of the century maybe). Eleven bones-players (bone-player, boner, bonist, bonesist, osyonist, we can't agree on the name) and spouses or significant others had gathered by 1:00 PM to share bones-playing techniques, instruments and instrument construction material, musical preferences, to harmonize and to have great fun and fellowship. All objectives were met beyond expectations.
