We expect that the highlight of the tour will be the full-day visit to GCA’s Camp Sizanani in the beautiful Magaliesberg mountain area. There you will meet counselors and campers whose lives are being transformed by the Camp experience. The children are given so much more than 8 days of fun – they are provided with HIV-prevention education, life skills training, a sense of belonging, and hope for the future. In a related activity in Soweto, close to Johannesburg, you will participate in one of the biweekly Youth Clubs (follow-up sessions to camp) near the campers’ homes, where kids who have previously attended Camp Sizanani experience changing young lives in a truly positive way. You will be accompanied in Johannesburg, Magaliesburg, Soweto, and Cape Town by the founder and President of Global Camps Africa, Phil Lilienthal. In addition to visiting Camp Sizanani and the Soweto Youth Club, we have added many more memorable activities while in this northern part of South Africa (Gauteng and Mpumalanga Province). Founder, President and CEO Philip Lilienthal, Veteran U.S. Camp Owner and Reston, Virginia Attorney History • Established in 2003 -- Global Camps Africa is incorporated in the United States and received its 501(c)(3) tax status. • First residential camp program held in 2004 in South Africa – Camp Sizanani (Sizanani is Zulu for “helping one another”) Facts and Figures • Camps Sizanani holds three 8-day sessions a year, for 140 campers, on a rented site an hour from Johannesburg. • Coed and single gender camps serve South African youth, ages 11 to 16, mostly from Soweto. • More than 4,300 children have attended camp since 2004. • Thirty-ve counselors lead each session with 4 days pre-camp training; counselors include South African sta and international volunteers who pay their own transportation, room and board. • Seven 1-hour classes are held each day, with HIV/AIDS prevention education and life skills woven into every component, in addition to special life skills classes. o HIV/AIDS prevention education o Theater, storytelling, dancing, poetry o Nutrition o Arts and crafts o Sports o Adventure and Teamwork o Swimming • Evening programs include campres, skits, games, and issues discussions. • Follow-up provided via biweekly Kids Clubs held on Saturdays, year-round at eight locations around Soweto.

    2003­2008 Rockefeller Brothers Fund South Africa Grantmaking Strategy Evaluation Consultants: Insideout: Monitoring & Evaluation Specialists Insideout: M&E Specialists for the RBF Executive Summary This evaluation examines the Rockefeller Brothers Fund (RBF) grantmaking in South Africa between 2003 and 2008 that is focused on models of care, education, support, advocacy, and capacity building in the fields of basic education and vulnerable children. The evaluation: 1.) reviews and analyzes current grantmaking in terms of its changing context and the results of grantees’ work; 2.) explores grantee partners’ experiences with RBF in the light of other donors; and 3.) makes recommendations about the future focus and methodology for grantmaking in South Africa. The data collection included three key components: 1) the compilation of an NGO matrix (a summary of 50 RBF grants made to 28 organizations working from 2004 to 2008 in the basic education and vulnerable children sectors); 2) 12 mini qualitative reviews of selected grantee partners; and 3) a report on the discussions held with RBF grantee partners at three provincial cluster meetings. The data from all three components were used for this evaluation report. First, the evaluation explores the history of the RBF’s grantmaking in relation to the evolving HIV and AIDS, vulnerable children and education context in South Africa, and finds evidence that RBF was indeed responsive and shifted its own strategies to appropriate focus areas to meet the changing needs in South Africa. An analysis of the grant distribution for this evaluation, illustrates the RBF’s multi-dimensional strategy of identifying an innovative idea, supporting its growth into a best practice model, supporting policy change through advocacy, awareness-raising and research, and supporting the overall capacity of organizations to become vehicles of change.
