Dilated Cardiomyopathy in Dogs Patti S. Snyder, DVM, MS, DACVIM Associate Professor, University of Florida General Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a very common form of heart disease in dogs. Only degenerative valve disease (also called mitral valve disease or endocardiosis or mitral insufficiency) and in some places heartworm disease are more common. It was not until the 1970s, when echocardiography began to be performed in veterinary institutions, that dilated cardiomyopathy could be diagnosed non-invasively with any certain degree of accuracy. The reported prevalence in dogs is approximately 0.5 percent. Based upon a national database of dogs presented to veterinary schools in North America, we know that 5.8 percent of the Doberman Pinschers that were seen at a school had DCM, 5.6 percent of the Irish Wolfhounds presented had DCM. 3.9 percent of the Great Danes, 3.4 percent of the Boxers and 2.6 percent of the St. Bernards. The prevalence in purebred dogs in 0.65 percent whereas the prevalence in mixed breed dogs is 0.16 percent. In general, the dogs are middle age (4-10 years of age, with the exception of the Portuguese Water Dog (0.5 – 8 months)).

The Portuguese Water Dog is a swimmer and diver of exceptional ability and stamina, who aided his master at sea by retrieving broken nets, herding schools of fish, and carrying messages between boats and to shore. He is a loyal companion and alert guard. This highly intelligent utilitarian breed is distinguished by two coat types, either curly or wavy; an impressive head of considerable breadth and well proportioned mass; a ruggedly built, well-knit body; and a powerful, thickly based tail, carried gallantly or used purposefully as a rudder. The Portuguese Water Dog provides an indelible impression of strength, spirit, and soundness. Size, Proportion, Substance: Size - Height at the withers - Males, 20 to 23 inches. The ideal is 22 inches. Females, 17 to 21 inches. The ideal is 19 inches. Weight - For males, 42 to 60 pounds; for females, 35 to 50 pounds. Proportion - Off square; slightly longer than tall when measured from prosternum to rearmost point of the buttocks, and from withers to ground. Substance - Strong, substantial bone; well developed, neither refined nor coarse, and a solidly built, muscular body.     GROUP III WORKING DOGS III-25 Portuguese Water Dog Origin and Purpose For centuries, this seafaring breed existed everywhere along the coast of Portugal and is considered a purely Portuguese breed. Owing to modifications in the fishing systems used, the breed has become restricted to the province of Algarve which should be considered its home. It was prized by fishermen for its spirited yet obedient nature and a robust, medium build that allowed for a full day’s work in and out of the water. The Portuguese Water Dog is an athletic swimmer and diver of exceptional ability and stamina. He aided his master at sea by retrieving gear and broken nets, herding schools of fish and carrying messages between boats and to the shore. General Appearance The Portuguese Water Dog is defined by his job. He has a hard, penetrating and attentive expression, splendid sight and a fair nose.     The Barbet - AKC’s Latest Addition to the Sporting Group The Canine Chronicle November/December 2019 Click here to read the complete article196 – November/December 2019 By Judy Descutner Hickory Tavern Farm The American Kennel Club has added 27 fully recognized breeds since 2010, including the 2015 addition of both the Spanish Water Dog and Lagotto Romagnolo. The Sporting group expands again in January 2020 with the addition of their French cousin, the Barbet, an agile marsh retriever with an affable and sunny disposition. Devoted, intelligent, responsive, and joyful, the Barbet is a medium sized, curly coated dog with a distinctive beard (barbé), a whimsical appearance, and an influential history. Sharing some of the same relations as other European curly coated breeds (Portuguese Water Dog, Spanish Water Dog, Irish Water Spaniel, Lagotto Romagnolo, etc.), this French water dog’s standard was first written in 1894 for the French Société Centrale Canine. The Barbet has been recognized by the FCI for 65 years and history suggests that the Poodle, Bichon Frise, and several other breeds took their foundation from the Barbet. Over 500 Barbet are currently registered with AKC. The majority of these dogs were born in America from a foundation of stock imported mostly from Canada, The Netherlands, France, and Poland. Barbet have spent the past three years in AKC’s Miscellaneous group where dogs have earned titles in conformation, obedience, rally, dock diving, agility, coursing ability, farm dog, scent work, trick dog, therapy, and Canine Good Citizen. The Barbet Club of America was formed in 2009 with the goal of gaining full AKC recognition, which will put the Barbet on par with its standing in Canada and FCI countries.

    ‘Leão’, from an Algarve fisherman who, although reluctant to part with him, was ultimately persuaded. A magnificent work - ing Cão de Aqua, Leão became the model for the first Portuguese Water Dog Breed Standard written in 1938 by Bensaude’s friends, Dr. Manuel Fernandes Marques and Dr. Federico Pinto Soares. Despite the work Bensaude did with the breed, after his death in 1967, and the Portuguese Revolution in 1974, the breed was once again in jeopardy. The first Portuguese Water Dog was imported to the United States in 1968, by the ”First Lady of the Breed” Deyanne Farell Miller (who, interestingly, was a Canadian). This marked the beginning of a new era for the breed. Several years later, in 1972, sixteen fanciers formed the Portuguese Water Dog Club of America (PWDCA), and in 1984, after only 3 years in the Miscellaneous class, the breed received AKC recognition and was placed in the Working Group. Mrs. Miller mentored many early PWD breeders, and in North America the breed their skills − skills reminiscent of their work on the Portuguese owes its survival and popularity to her tireless efforts.
