Guide to Instrumentation Literature Instrumentation Literature United States Department of Commerce National Bureau of Standards Miscellaneous Publication 271 THE NATIONAL BUREAU OF STANDARDS The National Bureau of Standards is a principal focal point in the Federal Government for assuring maximum application of the physical and engineering sciences to the advancement of technology in industry and commerce. Its responsibilities include development and maintenance of the national stand- ards of measurement, and the provisions of means for making measurements consistent with those standards; determination of physical constants and properties of materials; development of methods for testing materials, mechanisms, and structures, and making such tests as may be necessary, particu- larly for government agencies; cooperation in the establishment of standard practices for incorpora- tion in codes and specifications; advisory service to government agencies on scientific and technical problems; invention and development of devices to serve special needs of the Government; assistance to industry, business, and consumers in the development and acceptance of commercial standards and simplified trade practice recommendations; administration of programs in cooperation with United States business groups and standards organizations for the development of international standards of practice; and maintenance of a clearinghouse for the collection and dissemination of scientific, tech- nical, and engineering information. In 195>2 Julian F. Smith of the Library of Congress prepared a guide and source list, Instrumentation Literature and its Use , for the Office of Basic Instrumentation, National Bureau of Standards. Revision of the two publications was undertaken jointly by AS ME and NBS, and the result was issued in 1955 as NBS Circular 567, Guide to Instrumentation Literature . Lyman Van der Pyl, for the Bibliography Committee of the Instru- ments and Regulators Division, ASME, participated in the revision. The Smith report was thoroughly revised, enlarged, and updated, but its list of instru- ment manufacturers (readily available elsewhere) was dropped. The present Monograph is a revision of Circular 567. The announced ob- jective of Circular 567 was to assist all persons "interested in utilizing the extensive and scattered literature of instrumentation." With the same objec- tive, this revision has brought its literature coverage into 196)4, while drop- ping older references now aging into obsolescence. The revision is part of a program of instrumentation research and development in the Basic Instrumenta- tion Section under Joshua Stern, chief of the section. A. V. Astin, Director. This paper examines the privatization of Lufthansa and Deutsche Telekom in order to see whether changes in enterprise ownership reflect a process of convergence in the rules of coiporate governance. While the outward form of privatization in Germany looks quite similar to privatization in Britain and the United States, these two cases show little evidence that the change in ownership is driving any formal changes in corporate governance. If anything, German financial institutions and trade unions continue to exercise distinctive roles that rest on their historical positions in the German economy. Archambeault McMaster University - Electrical and Conmuter Engineering Abstract The purpose of this thesis was to design, build and test a prototype artifact suppressing electroencephalogram data acquisition system (AS-EEG-DAQ-S) to collect electroencephalogram (EEG) evoked potential (EP) data during repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) without the EEG signal being masked by transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) artifact. A functional AS-EEG-DAQ-S capable of blocking TMS artifact would provide for the first time a quantitative measurement system to assist in optimal TMS coil positioning during the rTMS treatment of depression, an alternative to electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). This thesis provides the details for an AS-EEG­ DAQ-S. Preliminary TMS EP results on a human subject were collected. Results showed transcallosal conduction times of 12ms to 31ms, which are consistent with those predicted and collected by other researchers in the TMS field. The first portion of this work provides electrode heating data for modem rTMS paradigms for the recording ofEEG during rTMS.
