Azad Jammu & Kashmir at a Glance was a regular statistical publication of Planning & Development Department with its last version published in 2015 but it lacked the details of sectoral data. The improved version of “Azad Jammu & Kashmir Statistical Year Book” was revived in 2017 as an additional statistical publication besides “AJ&K at a Glance”, which is in a brochure form that covers the data of almost all sectors. Recent “Statistical Year Book 2020” is the 4th edition published since then, which provides not only statistical data but also contains graphs and analysis of the data. As researchers and scholars from various segments of society within the State, as well as academia from Pakistan and abroad have been persistently approaching us for the provision of data pertaining to all sectors therefore, it was decided to publish Statistical Year Book regularly on annual basis. Presently, this new publication is a useful reference book for researchers and is a potential source of providing reference material to the planners, academicians and decision makers as well as the development fraternity. This publication is also available on the website of Planning & Development Department of GoAJ&K (www.pndajk.gov.pk). I would like to appreciate the efforts of staff of all Sections of P&DD including Bureau of Statistics, Statistics Section and Land Use Planning Section of P&DD for their proactive work for preparing this quality document, which is improved in many aspects and will be helpful for the development partners within AJ&K and outside of it. My special thanks are also due to all stakeholders/line departments of GoAJ&K and other national institutes for their regular support in providing timely and adequate statistical information without which the timely publication of this book would not have been possible. We desire continuous improvements in this document in future and hence inputs and suggestions from all stakeholders/entities and readers for improving it would be appreciated and acknowledged at all levels. (Dr. Syed Asif Hussain) Additional Chief Secretary (Dev.) ACKNOWLEDGMENT The Statistical Year Book 2020 is an addition in the series of publications of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir Statistical Year Book introduced in mid 1970s. Firstly, it was published in 1977 under the mandate of P&DD for collecting, compiling and dissemination of statistical information to facilitate the process towards realistic planning based on sound data. The process of information gathering rests on multi-faceted tasks along with numerous multi- dimensional activities spread over AJ&K territory wherein major role in this context lies with the stakeholder departments in generating primary information with ample credibility and soundness. The line departments are in fact, the key actors in creating and compiling accurate and reliable data pertaining to their respective domain as well as to their own areas of interventions. The P&DD AJ&K on the other hand, facilitates all the data producing entities in compilation and assembling this valuable information into a systematic and organised way to create a pool of data ensuring regular updating by maintaining its integrity overtime. P&DD through vital input from the line departments makes its best efforts for assembling the scattered information to ensure easy accessibility and timely dissemination for its optimal use by all the stakeholders. The new version of the Statistical Year Book 2020, is comprising of 25 chapters containing diversified information about area, topography, soil, demography and different socio-economic as well as productive sectors of AJ&K economy. In the Statistical Book 2019, some new tables relating to the sectors of Health, Transport, Industries, Population and Power were included while, in this current version some more new tables relating to the sector of Education are also made part of the book. The information provided in this book is not only compiled in well-structured tabulated forms but also converted into self-explanatory graphs and diagrams, which makes this manuscript more interesting and easily understandable. While preparing this book, the lessons learnt in the past such efforts were kept in mind. The best practices have been utilized while upgrading this new version with improved statistical information. Moreover, the rigorous efforts of the staff in this uphill task deserve appreciation. The stakeholder departments and different organisations/entities and individuals along with officers and staff of P&DD and line departments are also appreciated for their meaningful contribution in terms of valuable and credible statistical information. This document could be comfortably used for all practical purposes including realistic planning, judicious resource allocations, quality research, good governance and other initiatives aimed at accelerating development process and upgrading socio-economic status of a common man in AJ&K. • In Neelum Valley, Azad Jammu and Kashmir
Pakistan J. Zool., vol. 44(1), pp. 233-239, 2012. Distribution, Population Status and Habitat Utilization of Common Otter (Lutra lutra) in Neelum Valley, Azad Jammu and Kashmir Muhammad Bashir Khan, Khawaja Basharat Ahmed, Muhammad Siddique Awan, Usman Ali, Riaz Aziz Minhas* and Shahid Ashraf Choudary Department of Zoology, University of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Muzaffarabad Abstract.- Neelum Valley comprises of fascinating wildlife, yet it is not explored due to multiple factors including inaccessibility, no appropriate means of transportation and communication and cross border firing between Pakistan and Indian armed forces. Common otter (Lutra lutra) listed as near threatened by IUCN in the Red List of 2008, has been extinct in much of its range with many populations still thinning and is firmly protected by the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Wild Life Act. The present study aimed to find out the distribution, habitat utilization and population status of common otter in Neelum Valley. Study area was divided into zones and localities and eight months surveys of each locality were conducted from December, 2004 to July, 2005. The important vegetation of the area was Rumex histatus, Adhatoda zeyloanica, Cynoglossum lanceolatum, Salix sp, Pinus sp, Cedrus deodara and Celtis eriocarpa. Common otter was found to adapt to rocky area with cave type places, sands and pebbles. Average population was measured by the indirect method of sampling. The animal was distributed in all three zones and 22 localities apart from Nosada locality. A total population of 35 animals was estimated with the average population density of 2.29 animals/km2 in the study area.

The genus Inula was described by LINNAEUS with thirteen species (1753, 1754). The pro - tologue used by LINNAEUS was quite generalized as he did not give the weightage to the finer details of floral characters. Later on, this genus was treated by variuos workers from time to time (viz., CANDOLLE, 1836; BENTHAM & HOOKER, 1873; BOISSIER, 1875; CLARKE, 1876; HOOKER, 1881; BECK, 1882; HOFFMANN, 1890; GORSCHKOVA, 1959; KITAMURA, 1960; GRIERSON, 1975; BALL & TUTIN, 1976; RECHINGER, 1980; ANDERBERG, 1991; KUMAR, 1995).
