[email protected] Deerfield Beach - Manatees, those grey, bulky Florida natives, are on the move again; leaving the warm waters of hot springs and power plant ponds to forage up and down the east coast. This week, residents of Hillsboro Cove spotted one in their west harbor just off the Intracoastal Waterway. In February, Broward County conservationists tracked hundreds in local waters, 447 on Feb. 5 and another 213 on Feb. 11. It’s a marine science anyone can enjoy. The county offers an “I Saw a Manatee” app for mobile phones that keeps track of manatee movements here. It’s a dangerous time for these aquatic mammals as they begin their annual migration. Those scars, in fact, help scientists identify them. The vast majority are caused by boats, some by fishing lines and ropes. Others from healed infections. The Florida Conservation Commission tags these mammals using the latest technology. It has counted 7,520 this year in the state’s waterways. Once an endangered species, conservation efforts have reduced that classification to “threatened.” Nicknamed “sea cows,” these slow moving vegetarians have no need for speed. Instead, they meander
