Barbara Pym, Useless Longings, and Some Tame Gazelle
Love In Her Own Peculiar Way: Barbara Pym, Useless Longings, and Some Tame Gazelle Michelle Huneven Paper presented at the 18th North American Conference of the Barbara Pym Society Cambridge, Massachusetts, 12-13 March 2016 Like Henry James, Barbara Pym’s great subject is the impossibility of love. While James wrote of an inability to love, Pym wrote of love that is not returned. Unrequited love. Useless longings. Herself an ambivalent adept of one-sided passion—she did appreciate a good, gut-twisting love pang— Pym wrote of women who love married men (Some Tame Gazelle and Jane and Prudence ), women who form intense attachments to gay men (A Glass of Blessings, The Sweet Dove Died), and women who stalk their love objects (No Fond Return of Love). Pym was 22 when, to amuse her friends at Oxford—and also to get a handle on a distressing love affair— she wrote a short story about all of them called Some Tame Gazelle. Her friends were amused, and Pym determined to expand it into a novel. Not as easy as she’d thought! It would take her fifteen years to hammer that painful romantic episode into her pitch-perfect comic masterpiece. 1. Barbara Barbara Pym as a college student was tall, attractive, well-dressed, shy, funny as hell, and very smart. Men liked her, and she was keenly interested in return. Perhaps a little too interested; her Oxford diary pays more attention to boys than to books. As she was shy, quiet, and facing her first only nominally-chaperoned co- educational environment, Pym invented a persona to face the opposite sex: the dashing and adventurous Sandra. -

Lawson will take to the Concert Hall stage on 20 January, 2016 for an evening of conversation with the woman who puts the politics into food, the host of the ABC’s Kitchen Cabinet Annabel Crabb. Lawson’s Sydney Opera House appearance coincides with the launch of her first book in three years, Simply Nigella, which – as its title suggests – encapsulates Lawson’s joyfully relaxed and uncomplicated approach to food. Her debut cookbook, How to Eat: The Pleasures and Principles of Good Food, and television show Nigella Bites made Lawson a household name. She has since become a prominent figure on the Food Network, Foxtel and Channel 10. Lawson was named Author of the Year by the British Book Awards for How to Be a Domestic Goddess: Baking and the Art of Comfort Cooking – hailed as the book that launched a thousand cupcakes – and was voted Best Food Personality in a readers’ vote at the Observer Food Monthly Awards in 2014. SAMPLE ARTICLES FROM THE GLADSTONE REVIEW As it is likely that several readers of this e-journal have discovered the existence of the New Gladstone Review for the first time, I thought it would be helpful to give more idea of the style adopted by providing some examples of articles that were published during 2017. I begin with the introduction on page 1 of the January 2017 issue, and thereafter add seven articles published in subsequent issues. THE GLADSTONE REVIEW January 2017 a monthly e-journal Informal commentary, opinions, reviews, news, illustrations and poetry for bookish people of philanthropic inclination INTRODUCTION This is the first issue of the successor to the Gladstone Books Newsletter, the publication which was launched in November 2015 in association with the Gladstone Books shop in Southwell. The shop was named after William Gladstone, who became an MP for near-by Newark when only 23 years old in 1832, and was subsequently Liberal Prime Minister on four occasions until his death in 1898. It was Gladstone's bibliophilia, rather than his political achievements, that led to adoption of this name when I first started selling second-hand books in Newark in 2002. For he was an avid reader of the 30,000 books he assembled in his personal library, which became the nucleus of the collection in St Deiniol’s library in north Wales, and which is his most tangible legacy. I retained the name when moving the business to Lincoln in 2006, and since May 2015, to the shop in Southwell. * Ben Mepham * Of course, Gladstone Books is now back in Lincoln! Items considered food may be sourced from plants, animals or other categories such as fungus or fermented products like alcohol. Although many human cultures sought food items through hunting and gathering, today most cultures use farming, ranching, and fishing, with hunting, foraging and other methods of a local nature included but playing a minor role. Many cultures have diversified their foods by means of preparation, cooking methods and manufacturing. This also includes a complex food trade which helps the cultures to economically survive by-way-of food, not just by consumption. Many cultures study the dietary analysis of food habits. While humans are omnivores, religion and social constructs such as morality often affect which foods they will consume.
